Celebrating over 25 years of service excellence!
The new Ontario government is giving lo-cal festivals and events a boost to help grow tourism, create jobs and support economic growth across the province.
This year, 203 festivals and events received funding through the Celebrate Ontario fund. This support will help organizers enhance programming and services, attract new audi-ences and create jobs in the tourism sector.
“Our government knows the value of in-vesting in local festivals and events,” said Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Mi-chael Chan. “Through Celebrate Ontario, we are helping festivals and events support thousands of jobs and generate millions in
revenue while giving families and visitors new ways to experience our province.”
Ontario’s unique local festivals and events celebrate our diversity, heritage and culture, and make Ontario a more attractive place to visit.
“Festivals and events are important to com-munities across Ontario,” said Executive Di-rector of Festivals and Events Gary Masters. “Celebrate Ontario grants are an incredibly effective way to enhance the quality of those
festivals and events, and that means more visitors — visitors who stay longer and con-tribute to local economies.”
Supporting festivals and events is part of the new Ontario government’s efforts to build a strong economy and vibrant communities.
QUICK FACTS• Festivals and events generate more than
22,000 jobs in Ontario every year.• Festivals and events that received Celebrate
Ontario funding in 2011 reported an increase of 1.1 million visitors and over $165 million in additional visitor spending over 2010.
• Celebrate Ontario 2013 is providing support to over 203 festivals and events. Since 2007, the province has invested $77 million to en-hance almost 1,000 festivals and events.
• Tourism is an important part of Ontario’s economy. In 2011 tourism contributed over $23 billion to the economy and supported over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs. ●

A new study from BMO Bank of Montreal reveals that skills training for new hires re-mains a high priority among Canadian em-ployers in 2013.
The report, conducted by Pollara, was de-signed to determine the amount of training required for new hires entering the workforce across various sectors, and revealed:• More than one-third (38 per cent) of small
businesses state that new hires require basic training
• Another 22 per cent of small businesses have found new hires require signifi cant training and guidance
• The need for training for new hires is most prevalent among large corporations, where three-in-four say new hires need basic (47 per cent) or signifi cant (27 per cent) training“The level of talent and expertise of a
small or large business’ employees are the very foundation of success and are often the source of competitive advantage,” said Steve Murphy, Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking, BMO Bank of Montreal. “Whether it’s enrolling new and existing employees in specialized training programs at community colleges, career colleges, union training halls or through internal programs, ensuring there are resources dedicated to the training and development of new employees is essential and should continue to be a top priority for business leaders.”
Murphy added that investing in employ-ee training and development now, in con-junction with a longer-term plan, will help business owners ensure they have a supply of talented employees who are prepared to take the company to the next level of per-formance.
The statistics were released as the Federal Government announced the introduction of the Canada Job Grant as part of the 2013 Fed-eral Budget in order to align job training more closely to the skills employers need and the jobs available. The Canada Job Grant could provide $15,000 or more per person to ensure Canadians are getting the skills that employ-ers are seeking. Up to $5,000 will be provided by the Federal Government, and that amount will be matched by the province/territory and by the employer.
“This step addresses what is considered a signifi cant employment and economic issue comes at a good time for many Canadians seeking work and the employers looking to attain talent and bolster productivity and profi tability,” said Murphy. “The measures in Budget 2013 will have a positive impact on the health and long-term stability of Canada’s workforce.”
The report was conducted via Pollara with a sample of 500 Canadian business owners, conducted between February 25th and March 15th, 2013. ●

OTTAWA EDITION, APRIL 20–MAY 4, 2013
Employers are not only looking for educated labor to fi ll high skill positions, but to fi ll tradi-tionally lower skill jobs as well. Thirty-six per cent of hiring managers and human resource professionals said they are hiring more employ-ees with college degrees for positions that were historically held by high school graduates.
“Employers are fi lling more entry level func-tions with educated labor,” said Brent Rasmus-sen, President of CareerBuilder North America. “While some of this may be attributed to a com-petitive job market that lends itself to college grads taking lower skill jobs, it also speaks to companies raising performance expectations for roles within their fi rms to enhance overall productivity, product quality and sales.”
Of employers who have hired more work-ers with college degrees for jobs that were his-torically held by high school graduates, most reported positive impacts on their business in the forms of: • Higher quality of work – 76 per cent • Productivity – 45 per cent • Revenue – 23 per cent • Customer loyalty – 17 per cent
Specifi c qualifi cations for jobs are becom-
ing more demanding. One-in-four employers (25 per cent) said they have increased their educational requirements for jobs over the last fi ve years.
Fifty-nine per cent reported that they re-quire a two-year university degree or higher for their positions; 45 per cent require a four-year degree or higher.
The lack of a college education may limit upward mobility. Forty-one per cent of em-ployers said they are unlikely to promote someone who doesn’t have a college degree.
This survey was conducted online within Canada by Harris Interactive© on behalf of CareerBuilder.ca among 415 Canadian hiring managers and human resource profession-als (employed full-time; not self-employed; non-government) ages 18 and over between November 1 and November 30, 2012 (percent-ages for some questions are based on a subset, based on their responses to certain questions). With a pure probability sample of 415 one could say with a 95 percent probability that the overall results have a sampling error of +/- 4.81 percentage points. Sampling error for data from sub-samples is higher and varies. ●

WILLIS COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH FORTINET TO CREATE AND FILL JOBS IN OTTAWA
(Ottawa) 613-233-1128 williscollege.com
Willis College, a leading Canadian Private Career College, has announced an innovative job creation program with Fortinet, a leading network security provider and the worldwide leader of unified threat management solutions. Willis College intends to expand its staff and grow its Ottawa campus security curriculum with the help of Fortinet prod-uct training, research and development and tech-nical support teams. Fortinet provides end-to-end security solutions to enterprises, service providers and government entities worldwide, including the majority of the Fortune 100™.
“Most of the job growth we’ve seen at our Ottawa headquarters has been in the area of technical support and our new professional and educational
services,” said Michael Anderson, vice president of services at Fortinet.
Fortinet has provided Willis College Ottawa with a number of enterprise-grade network security solutions and collaborated on a comprehensive classroom curriculum that will provide students with complete network security installation and configuration experience. Willis College is in the process of establishing a Fortinet specific class-room at their O’Connor St. Campus.
“We are honoured to have been chosen for this opportunity,” said Rima Aristocrat, president of Willis College. “It is a testament to and recognition of our excellence in IT education, which we strive to achieve and maintain. This partnership will put our graduates at the forefront of their competition and generally benefit our community.”
“We look forward to working with Willis College on their security program and recruiting their best and brightest students as soon as they graduate.”
“Willis College graduates join us with strong technical skills, professional communication skills and great attitudes. They have proven to be a great fit for our fast-paced, highly technical environment. Because of the excellent training these graduates receive at Willis, they’re immediately able to add real value to our organization. The fact that Willis graduates students throughout the year is particularly useful for us since our staffing needs are as dynamic as the business we support. We look forward to building on our strong relationship with Willis College, hiring many more graduates as soon as they graduate, to offer the local community opportunities for high quality technical training and great jobs in a fast-growing industry”
