Thisproject,locatedinCottonwood,UT,proposesanapartmentbuildingwithretailonthegroundfloorforthenewdowntowncommunity.Theprojectaimedtocomprehensivelyevaluateapartmentlayoutsduringaweeklongcharrettewithfellowstudios,wherestudentsthoroughlyanalyzedapartmenttypologies.Theprojectincor-porateslocalarchitecturalaesthetictolendthebuildingasenceofplace.ToenhancethefuturedowntowncommunityinCottonwood,retail,parkingandstoragespaceswerelocatedonsite.Theapartmentsareefficientintheirlayouts,allowingspaceforammenitiessuchasbalconiesandlaundryroomsineachapartment.

< TheprojectsuccessfullyincorporatesauniqueHVACsystemwhichwasevaluatedandcalculatedtofitthenecessaryrequirementsforthevolumeofthebuilding.The system utilizes both functionalandaestheti-callyintriguing&uniqueairducts,inspiredbypar-ascopes seen in nautical construction.

< A brick screen employs modernuseofthisdynamicbuildingmaterialwhichwasan essential part of the ellaborateandcomplex construction of Ancient Rome.Showcasingtheevolutionofbrick,the modernfacadesrisefromtherusticatedbaseofthebuidings,emmulatinghowthearchitectureofmodernRomewasconstructedatopthe Ancient ruins of the city.

TheCentroperBelleArtiislocatedatthesouthernendofMussolini’sForoItalicoinnorthernRome,anareawheremodernismhasfoundahome.Here,artistsattendsixmonthfellowships,immersingthemselvesinRomancultureasinspirationfortheirart.TheCenteriscomposedofthreebuildings,separatingwork,study,&livingspacesthroughtheplacementofgardens&plazasasspatialtransitions.Thejuxtapositionofthethreebuildingscreatesacolonadedinteriorstreet,flankedbyretail&publicgalleries,funnelingpatronstothetranquilreargarden.Thistran-sitionfromtighttoopenspacesimmulatestheexperienceofwalkingthroughthemedievalstreetsofHistoricRome,followedbythereliefofarrivingatanopenplaza.Afootbridgeconnectsbuild-ingsA&Bonthesecondlevel,aprivateaccesspointbetweenthedormitories&studiospaces.

Theproposedre-designofthePackardHotelinHistoricOldHavanafocusesonincorporatingtraditionalCubandesignaestheticintoaninnovativeandrationaldesign,anchoringthemostprominentcornerofthecity.Thehotel’saestch-eticisinspiredbythesignificanthistoricarchitetureseenthroughoutHavana,whichnowstandsinnearruin.Theclas-sicalinspiredplansandelevationsrespectthesurroundinghistoricbuildingswhileshowcasingthecomplexdetailsofCuban architectural typologies.

MainLobbyPlanwithInteriorElevations.The main lobby space serves as a transition fromthebusystreetsofHavanatotheinteriorcourtyardsofthebuilding.ThistransitionistypicalintraditionalCubandesign,transition-ing visitors from public space to private space. WiththeuseofCubantiledfloors,doubleheightcolumnsandsmallintimateseatingareas,thelobbywelcomesvisitorstothePack-ardHotel.

< AsanadditiontothestandingremainsoftheformerHotelPackard’sfacade,thedesignrecallstheaestheticoftraditionalCubanarchetypes.Thehotel’sdesignemulatesthetypicaltransitionthroughtheCubanhouse, bringing guests from the public realm to privatespacethroughaseriesofcourtyards.
