Forked River Tuna Club Editors: Mike & Mary Wanca, Staff, Bob West PC, Marion Spielberger
Commodore Ron Tholen NOVEMBER 2014
Hi, folks. I truly enjoyed my first month as your commodore. Thank you for all the cards and well wishes. Along with Holly, I will do my best to move the Club forward in the next year. Welcome to our new Bridge Officers, Rear Commodore Eric Engard and Fleet Captain John Howell. These men are al-ready working hard in their new positions, as are all the officers on the Bridge. The Commodore’s Cocktail Party/Past Commodores/Past Presidents party was well attended and the food was great.
The Fall Bass and Blues Tournament is well on its way, thanks to Guido
Giffionello and the Tournament Committee.
What can I say, but thank you to PC George McNamara and his committee for their great “Friday Night Dinners”. Great food by Blue Collar Caterers, great drinks and most of all, great friends. “Nothing Better”!
In closing, as it’s been said many times before…”It’s your club, please come out and
support it”.
Until next month...

Hi Everyone. With the Summer fishing season gone, there is plenty to
fish for in the Fall/Winter season. Blackfish goes from 1 to 6 fish on
November 16th; Sea Bass opens back up to 15 fish on October 18th and
the offshore guys are hoping for a few more weather windows to hit
the canyons.
The Tournament Committee has the Bass and Blues Captain's Meeting on Friday, October 17th. Let's get out and support this tourna-ment. We need to all get together to support the Tuna Tournament for next year. It will take all year for this event to happen. It can be a
premier event for us to get our name out there for new members and as a great source of new revenue for the Club. This will not happen unless everyone pitches in.
We have two new divisions in the Angler of the Year Awards - Inshore - Tuna (Bluefin) and Offshore - Tuna (all the others). Last, but certainly not least, as an extension of the traditional shirt Angler of the Year Awards divisions, I'm opening it up to any species of fish for a Certificate Division. If you weigh in any fish and it is the heaviest fish of that species for the year, you will receive an Angler of the Year Certificate for that species.
TIGHT LINES - Eric
Rear Commodore Eric Engard
As the days get shorter and the nights grow colder, there is still
plenty of warmth to be spread at the club. Our October general
meeting will be held on the 24th at 7:30. Coming up in November, we
have our two fall work parties. The first is scheduled for the 1st and
we can use all the help we can get. We need to rake leaves, clean the
grill, take down the tents and put away the picnic tables. Bring your
rakes and gloves. The second work party is on the 8th. We need to
finish raking the leaves and then tackle the overgrowth of brush be-
hind the club house. Bring your chain saws, rakes and gloves and if anyone has a brush hog,
please let me know as soon as possible so we can avoid renting one. The November Friday
Night Dinner is on the 14th. See the flyer in this edition of the Tuna Times. The Bass and
Blues Tournament Awards will be held on November 23rd at 1PM, with the FRTC Open
House following at 6PM

Fleet Captain John Howell FRTC Fleet Maneuver: LBI Chowderfest - The good weather window missed our Tuna
Tournament but landed smack on LBI’s Chowderfest Sunday. The day dawned with
bright fall sunshine and temperatures cool enough to make sipping hot clam chowder
even more of a treat.
This dejected Tuna Tournament fisherman and a few other members of the club sal-
vaged the back half of FRTC Garden State Classic weekend by sampling some of the
best red and white chowders imaginable and watching Comicon heroes like Souper
Man and villains like Broth Vader parading around the Beach Haven fairgrounds.
The chowder champions for 2014 were named after the chowder kettle’s levels were
lowered and the beer truck loads lightened. The votes were cast and compiled. The
popular vote winners were Manhattan: Stefanos’; New England: Howard’s Restaurant.
Upcoming FRTC International Fleet Maneuver:
Tropical Saltwater BONEFISH Flyfishing Adventure – March 07-14 2015
Los Roques, Venezuela has miles of wadeable flats, good-sized bonefish, consistently good weather, and a
long, stable season. Hands-down this fishery offers some of the best bonefishing that exists anywhere on
the planet. If you’re an angler looking for big bonefish, large numbers of bonefish, and fishing scenarios
that revolve almost entirely around wade fishing, then Los Roques is the perfect location for your next fly
fishing adventure. Truly a world-class destination, Los Roques provides varied and interesting fishing com-
plemented by prolific birdlife, comfortable accommodations and an unforgettable island atmosphere.
Los Roques is a necklace of islands in the Caribbean Sea situated 80 miles off the north coast of Venezuela.
Los Roques is an unspoiled atoll, characterized by its extremely clear waters, magnificent coral beds, di-
verse and varied flats, sandy beaches and hundreds of smaller mangrove cays all with incredible natural
beauty. Los Roques was declared a National Park in the mid-70’s. and then in the mid 90’s, even more envi-
ronmentally conscious regulations were enacted to protect the overall environment of the entire Archipel-
ago. Some flats are coral, some are soft marl covered with turtle grass and sea weed, however most flats
are firm, clean white, or golden in color, and easy to navigate. You will also be fishing extensive sand flats
and beach flats, channels, cuts, coral shallows, mangroves, and massive muds created by hundreds of fish
schooled up and feeding. In sum, Los Roques represents a bonefisherman’s wading paradise. Los Roques con-
tinues to be one of the best kept secrets in saltwater fly fishing. Although bonefish are the main attraction
in Los Roques, tarpon from 10 to 100 pounds are frequently landed. They can often be seen rolling in the
channels and occasionally on the deeper flats. Permit are often seen and occasionally caught. Other available
species at Los Roques include barracuda, snook, cero mackerel, bonito and a variety of snappers and hard
fighting jacks.
CAPACITY: Sixteen (16) anglers for the week. Four fisherman from our group have already signed up
and provided a deposit. In order to confirm a reservation “Yellow Dog” will need to collect a 50% deposit
for the trip. The remaining 50% balance is due 90 days prior to the trip date, and YD will send out a
friendly reminder at that time. Please be aware: This is not a “budget” trip. This is not short money.
The price on this one hurts a little bit.
Double Occupancy (2 Per Room / 2 Per Boat) 4 days of fishing $3,290.00
5 days of fishing $3,790.00
6 days of fishing $4,250.00
(Note: There are also accommodations available for non-fishing partners at a reduced rate.)
Plus airfare to Miami and onwards to Caracas, VZ.
We are receiving a special discount for flight from Miami to Caracas. Details provided in link below as well
as full trip details: http://www.yellowdogflyfishing.com/fly-fishing-vacation-lodges/fly-fishing-venezuela-

Old Business—Change of Watch had a loss of $1,167.68. Jim Giffonello discussed the missing loose leaf binder for the Tuna Tournament. The attendance at the Special BOG meeting was discussed. It was very disrespectful for the BOG members to go to the bar instead of at-tending the meeting.

A letter to the membership from the Tournament Director Hello, members. It’s been a while since I had to write a column for the Times, but this one is un-fortunately, a necessary one. As you know, we have different Committees to help spread the work load around. When we have a cleanup there are usually volunteers that show up to help. That makes the job go a lot smoother and takes the pressure off of the committee. When the Tourna-ment Committee used to sell ads for the Tournament book, it was primarily to make money for the Club. The rest of the tournament season was covered by a combination of entry fees, 50/50, raf-fles and shirt sales. Unfortunately, it got to the point that we had to give up the ad books be-cause we were tired of running ragged trying to get the ads. I asked the General Membership nu-merous times for their help and support with the Ad books, but it fell on deaf ears. During the period of the last 3 years that we published the ad book there were 4 ads sold by members. This prompted us to cancel the ad book due to a lack of help. We used to give back to the club any-where from eight thousand to sixteen thousand dollars each October. Now without the book, we are lucky to give back three thousand dollars. Just because the dues were raised does not mean that we don't help anymore, or that we don't have to keep trying to generate more income for the Club. We tried this year to run a Tuna Tournament to try to boost the committee income. I reached out to the membership to try to get some help manning weigh stations. Out of eighty members there were only two that could find a few hours to volunteer. That is sad. I believe the membership has assumed that the Committee will get the job done without any outside help so why bother volunteering. I can tell you that we are getting tired. We need help! I personally am tired of asking for help and getting little or none. I work my guys at Ocean Pipe Works very hard. They are expected to work hard and go the extra mile. That is because they get paid to do their job. I cannot and will not drive the "volunteers" that are on my Tournament Committee to the breaking point. They do their job because they enjoy the camaraderie of the Committee and the ability to help the Club prosper. I understand that not all members of the Club are fisherman, but they still can help out. If you are a new member and want to get involved with the Club, the Tournament Committee would be a great start. Not only do we run the tournaments, but we also go to the JCAA Sportsperson of the Year Dinner representing the club. We also go to dinner once a month and have a great time. Oh, by the way, if you are interested we meet every Tues-day, 7:30 PM at the club.
