1) What problem is to be addressed by your study?

The study roots itself in solving the existing problems of a rapidly changing world. One

of these problems is the lack of energy production and reliance on the so-called fossil fuels

which are imminently depleting as of today. Our study addresses that problem through the use

production of an efficient solar powered LED lighting system which could be used in power

afflicted places that lack energy production. The study harnesses the use of renewable energy

and existing technologies to produce a self-sufficient lighting system that could eventually be

used in street-lighting systems or for household lighting.

2) Give at least five journal articles or conference papers presenting a solution to the problem, or

related to the problem, considered (Name/s of Author/s, Title of Paper, Publisher, Year of

Publication).

1. O. Hazra, Solar Powered Exterior LED Lighting Systems: Considerations for Federal

Facility Managers, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory,2012

Alone Solar PV Power System for LED Lighting, HINDAWI Publishing Corp., 2013

5. Scott Mori, Solar Energy Efficiency, Tokyo Electron Ltd., 2013

3) What have other researchers done to solve the problem? How successful were they?

Researchers have improved the efficiency of the luminosity of the LED light, the solar

panels and the controller in their respective studies. In the research of Dr. Lai Yuk Ming et al on

improving the efficiency of the LED, they have designed a more effective controller that

increases the intensity of the LED light and minimizing wasted energy in the form of heat.

In the research study of José António Barros Vieira and Alexandre Manuel Mota entiltled

“A High-Performance Stand-Alone Solar PV Power System for LED Lighting”, a

microcontroller was used to enable a LED’s high performance operation they used a

microcontroller to automatically operate with real time basis which turns on and off in specific

time. The microcontroller drives the LED lights and make it more efficient in its operation.

In an existing study by Onsemi Corp., they have come up with the following: Highly

efficient solutions like the CS51221 charge controller with MPPT (Maximum Peak Power

Tracking) are found out to maximize the efficiency from solar panels. It is also found out that

when the NCP3066 IC is used as a charge controller, it provides a flexible/expandable solution

for driving LEDs from a battery source. The study concludes that expectations are increasing for

solar- powered LED lighting to become the environmentally friendly outdoor lighting solution

for the 21st century.

4) What is the concept of your group’s proposed solution? How does it compare with existing

solutions?

The concept is to come up with a more efficient controller to make the solar powered

lighting system effective in its operation. It is more focused on the efficiency of the lighting

system in its operation as per wanted. Although a low-cost system is considered, the study is

more driven to improve the efficiency in the lighting system itself through extensive research on

improving the charge controller, the use of the latest LED technology and Photovoltaic panels.
