DROUGHT IN INDIA:- Every Drop Counts
Multidisciplinary Project Class IX & X
Drought is a feature of climate that is defined as a period of below-average rainfall sufficiently
long and intense to result in serious environmental and socioeconomic stresses, such as crop
failures and water shortages, in the affected area. Droughts can occur in any climatic region, but
their characteristics vary considerably among regions. What droughts in all climatic regions have
in common is their gradual onset, whichin contrast to other natural hazardsmakes their
beginning and end difficult to identify. Defined primarily as natural phenomena, droughts have
not received much attention in the social sciences. Only since the 1990s, with the increasing
appreciation of the linkages between the environment and society, have droughts begun to be
viewed as an issue of interest also for the social sciences.
The effects of drought on environment, economy, and society are manifold. In order of
the increasing severity and scope of their impacts, four types of drought are commonly
distinguished: A meteorological drought manifests itself in a shortfall of precipitation or
changes in precipitation intensity and timing, possibly aggravated by other climatic
factors, such as high temperatures and winds. Risks associated with this type of drought
include wildfire hazard and reduced water infiltration into the soil. If the drought persists
long enough to result in significant soil water deficits and plant water stress, it crosses the
threshold into an agricultural drought. Lower crop yields and quality, as well as
increased soil erosion and dust emission, are possible impacts expected from drought.
The students of class IX & X will be doing a Multidisciplinary Project on Drought In
India. The students have been divided in different groups & the list is enclosed.
The area of research are:-
EVERY DROP COUNTS

DESCRIPTION:
Drought is mainly shortage of water in a particular area. Currently drought
conditions are prevailing in various districts of Maharashtra .It is essential for us
to know the causes and symptoms of drought. We can take necessary action and
precaution only when we are aware of the reasons which causes drought.
OBJECTIVE:
To conduct research on causes and symptoms of drought.Read newspapers, follow
news on television and do some research with the help of internet.
MATERIALS
REQUIRED:
Internet, reference books, chart papers.
ASSIGNED GROUP
TASK:
The students will conduct research on causes and symptoms of drought through
various available resources like internet, reference books, newspapers, television
and radio news clippings. They will make a project report of four pages and mail it
at the following id.-niveditapriya@yahoo.co.in
Abhey will make a chart on symptoms of drought and Astha and Bhavya will
make a chart on causes of drought. The chart should be attractive and informative
as it will be displayed during the presentation of the multidisciplinary project.
Mehal will make a static model on drought conditions prevailing in Maharashtra.
PRESENTATION IN
ASSEMBLY:
Static model on current drought situation of Maharashtra. It will be presented
through a role play in the assembly.

resulting in prolonged shortages in its water supply, whether atmospheric,
surface water or ground water. A drought can last for months or years, or
may be declared after as few as 15 days. Drought is a natural hazard..
