As patron of Showbiz Christchurch it gives me great pleasure to celebrate the ongoing success of this valued local organisation with their 2017 season brochure.

Showbiz have been entertaining the people of Christchurch for almost 80 years now, and it has been a delight seeing the new heights that they have attained since returning to the rebuilt Isaac Theatre Royal. Starting with an enormously successful season of The Phantom of the Opera in April 2015, more than 75,000 patrons have enjoyed the five major Showbiz productions that have been staged over the last two years.

2017 promises to continue this habit of excellence and success. The scale of these productions is jaw dropping, and it is superb to see them fully staged, in all their theatrical glory, here in Christchurch. Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Musical features an extraordinary 500 costumes, 200 extravagant headdresses, and a brand new, custom made bus, built here in the Garden City. The concert, An Evening of Rodgers and Hammerstein Classics, will lift the roof off the Isaac Theatre Royal with a performance by over 135 Christchurch based singers and instrumentalists, giving these iconic tunes a scale seldom heard live. Sister Act is a show never before seen in our city, that will prove that Christchurch nuns really do know how to have fun!

Congratulations and thanks to Showbiz Christchurch for bringing these world class productions to the people of Christchurch.

I hope you will enjoy many a memorable evening of exhilarating musical theatre at a Showbiz production in Christchurch’s treasured heritage theatre.

Kind regards

HAIRSPRAY SHOWBIZ 2016 SEASONPhoto by Kurt Langer

What a wonderful year of musical theatre 2016 has been, with three incredibly joyous and successful Showbiz Christchurch shows. 2017 promises to be another tremendous Showbiz year with Christchurch premieres of two blockbuster musicals and an exciting new concept with our mid-year concert.

There is something for everyone in these three productions:

Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Musical – Hot on the heels of its Auckland season, we are thrilled to have gained the rights to this mega-musical. It’s guaranteed to have you dancing in the aisles!

An Evening of Rodgers and Hammerstein Classics – All your favourites rolled into one great concert. Thrill to the music of our 100 voice chorus as they present songs from The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, The King & I, Carousel and many other well-known pieces from the pens of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.

Sister Act – The second of our fully staged major musicals for the year, Sister Act is the stage musical version of the well-loved Whoopi Goldberg movie. What do you do when being chased by gangsters who want to kill you? Hide in a convent and become a nun, of course! The rest, you know. A glitzy, fun musical you will not want to miss!

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank all our funders, industry partners and business sponsors – particularly the Christchurch City Council, Rata Foundation, Mainland Foundation and Christchurch Music Theatre Education Trust. Without their continuing support we would not be able to present the best of musical theatre to the public of Christchurch.

CATCH THIS BUS...because it is all kinds of FABULOUS!Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Musical has been captivating audiences worldwide since it debuted in 2006. It has played sold out seasons in Sydney, London’s West End and on Broadway, toured internationally, and won numerous accolades along the way, including prestigious Olivier and Tony Awards.

Based on the 1994 Oscar-winning hit movie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is an uplifting story of two Sydney drag artists and a transsexual, who hop aboard a battered old bus named Priscilla,

searching for love, friendship and family. Their journey of self-discovery takes them

on a road trip to the heartland of Australia where they find more that they could have ever dreamed of.

The heart of the story centres on a tale of love and acceptance, and learning to celebrate who we are, with all our quirks and charms. The fact that this story is told with a pastiche of booty-shaking

hits with more glitz and glamour than any closet can contain is the joy behind it all. With a dazzling array of over 500 outrageous costumes, 200 magnificent headdresses, a spectacular bus and a hit parade of dance floor classics including: ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’, ‘I Will Survive’, ‘Finally’, ‘I Love The Nightlife’, ‘Go West’, ‘Hot Stuff’, ‘Colour My World’ and ‘Shake Your Groove Thing’, Priscilla is the joyous party you must not miss in 2017.

Come and join the celebration, throw aside your inhibitions, and immerse yourself in the splendour that is Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Musical. Grab your Showbiz Christchurch ticket for the bus trip of a lifetime!

“A rollicking crowd pleaser in sequins! Priscilla packs enough heart to leave audiences enthralled!” – Variety USA

Rodgers ANDHammerstein

26-28 MAY

THE SOUND OF THEIR MUSICA concert of the finest works of Rodgers and HammersteinThe Isaac Theatre Royal will resound with the Sound of Music when Showbiz Christchurch presents An Evening of Rodgers and Hammerstein Classics, in concert. The most beloved works of Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics) will be presented in all their musical glory with a full Broadway style orchestra on stage, featured soloists and a chorus of over 100 singers from Showbiz Christchurch and the renowned National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA).

Rodgers and Hammerstein initiated what has been called “The Golden Age” of musical theatre with their writing partnership which is considered one of the greatest of the 20th century. Their string of hit musicals include Oklahoma, The King and I, Carousel, South Pacific and The Sound of Music, amongst others, which garnered 34 Tonys,

15 Oscars, the Pulitzer Prize and two Grammy Awards.

An Evening of Rodgers and Hammerstein Classics features much loved songs that were huge hits when first released, which have since grown to iconic status over the decades. The concert includes solos such as: ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Younger Than Springtime’ duets that include: ‘People Will Say We’re in Love’ and ‘I have Dreamed’, orchestral interludes and, of course, rousing choruses with over 100 singers raising the Isaac Theatre Royal roof with ‘Oklahoma!’, ‘There is Nothin’ Like a Dame’ and ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

Conducted by Richard Marrett and directed by Stephen Robertson, this will be a ‘Grand Night for Singing’ that will be one of your ‘Favourite Things’ in 2017.

“Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart, and you’ll never walk alone” Carousel

DIVINE BROADWAY COMEDY...which could become habit formingSister Act is the feel-good Broadway musical comedy smash based on the hit 1992 Whoopi Goldberg film. Featuring original music by Tony and eight-time Oscar winner, Alan Menken (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Little Shop of Horrors), this uplifting show was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical. The Showbiz Christchurch production will be directed and

choreographed by 2015 NZ Arts Laureate winner,

Sara Brodie.

It is Philadelphia, Christmas 1970, when wannabe disco diva Deloris Van

Cartier witnesses a murder committed by

her gangster boyfriend. She is put in protective

custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be a found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, under the non de plume Sister

Mary Clarence, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle of the nuns and their uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent, Deloris inspires the nuns to create a more contemporary choir, and they become the hit of the community. Word of their success reaches her ex-boyfriend Curtis, who arrives at the convent with his mob to settle their score with Deloris. A battle ensues between the mob and Deloris’s newly found sisterhood of feisty nuns.

Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, Sister Act will leave audiences breathless. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, Sister Act is reason to REJOICE!

“A Heavenly good time. A pull out the stops, family friendly, big Broadway musical”

The New York Observer.
