6. PROCESS OF DEPOSITION OF SEDIMENTS
IN THE DISTRICT
Some of the important factors which are responsible for the process of
sedimentation in a river basin are
a) The stage of river(the infant, youth, mature or old stage )
b) Lithology and structures of the upstream region or
provenance from where sediments eroded/migrated/travelled.
c) Geomorphology and gradient of provenance.
d) Anthropogenic activities such as mining, industrialization and
mega engineering projects such as Dam also affects the
process of sedimentation.
e) The thickness of the sequence is determined by the depth of
the stream channel during flood stage and is related to the
size of river itself.
In korba district Hasdeo River is the main river which
flows in direction from Northwest to southeast. In its flow direction it
erode out mainely the semiconsolidated sediments (Gondwana) which
covers the maximum area of Korba district. During its course at some
places erosion of Deccan traps and intertrappeans and Gneisses-
Granitoid complex also takes place. Minimata Bango Dam some how
effect the process of deposition of sediments in river course. Presence
of this type of mega structures diminishes the effective process of
sedimentation.
7.General Profile of Korba District
Korba District is an admininstrative district of Chhattisgarh state in
central India. The city of Korba is the district headquater , Korba is
Known for its coal mines such as Gevra area (one of the biggest coal
mines of Asia) Kusmunda area and Dipka area, all located in Korba
coal field. It also has power plants such as NTPC,CSEB (East,West)
and Balco captive power plant.

Korba district is quite rich in terms of forest wealth. The districts
total area is about 7,14,544 hectares out of which 2,83,497 hectares is
forest land that means 39.67 % area of Korba district is covered with

In Korba district, basically red yellow soil is found . locally this soil is
known as Mattasi. Mattasi is good for Kharif crop i,e paddy. Despite
this pulses and oil producing plants are also cropped .
In the district total 45 nos. of mining/quarry leases are
sanctioned, out of which 14 nos. are sanctioned as mining leases, rest
of the leases are leases of fire clay, ordinary stone, limestone, sand,
and soil for making bricks. In this district about 275.2565 sq.km. of
area is used in mining activity.
9. Physiography of the District
The district is situated in the northern parts of the state . Most of the
land which has plateau from the maikal ranges of the satpura hills,
is high and low and open. The biggest area of this open land is spread
near pasan. Hasdeo is the main River which flows through this
district, It has five tributaries i.e Gaj, Ahiran, Jatashankar, Chornai
and Tan. On the bank of the rivers are thin forest area and villages.
The area’s most important hill is Karela hill with a height of 3,253
feet (992m). To the North of Katghora, the slope of the valleys of the
Hasdeo and Gaj river is very less and joins the Surguja district in the
north. The Tan and Chornai rivers joins the River Hasdeo from
opposite directions- from the east and the west. Towards the Northen
Banks are the Gurudwari Hill, Janta Hill, Matin and Dhajag hills.

11.Geology and Mineral Wealth
Geologically the district exhibits lithology of Archean to Cainozoic age.
However , Granites and Gondwana occupy more than 90% of the area.
The Chhotanagpur Gneissic complex of Archean to Proterozoic age
consists of Granite gneiss and Granitoids, containing enclaves of
metasedimentary and metaigneous suits comprising schist, quartzite,
amphibolites and dolemitic marble. The unclassified metamorphic are
composed of quartzite, mica schist, dolomitic marble. The unclassified
metamorphic are composed of quartzite , mica schist, dolomitic marble,
phyllite and biotite chlorite schist (occassinally associated with
quartzite band). All these rocks are intruded by metabasic bodies /
dykes and quartz and pagmatitive veins. In the southern part of Korba
distt. Sedimentary rocks of Chhattisgarh supergroup are presrnt. They
are represented by unclassified shales,Limestone and dolomite of
Raipur group and sandstone and conglomerate of Chandarpur Group.
The overlying Gondwana supergroup is represented by Tachir,
Karharbari, barakar, and kamthi formations. Talchir group occupies
the large tract between Korba and hasdo- arand coal field. The base of
this formation is typified by tillite with green shale, clay and silt stone
constituting a dominant proportion of the lithicfill. Karhabari formation
is represented in the district as a narrow linear patch in the extreme
north eastern part. It is composed of medium to coarse grained arkosic
sandstone, a few pebble beds, conglomerate and shales with coalseams.
Usually the sandstone is feldspathic and ferruginous . The Kamthi
formation forms prominent ridges in the eastern part of the district. It
comprises of coarse ferruginous sandstone with carbonaceous shale and
very thin coal seams. The Lametas represented by calcareous sandstone
and cherty and siliceous limestone have alimited occurrence towards
the west central part of the district. The basalt occuras narrow linear
ridges in the northen parts of the district. Few laterite capping with
small lenses of Bauxite occur in the east central and west central part of
the area over the Barakar and Kamthi sandstone. The Korba basin
forms the northen member of the linear Gondwana belt from Field to
Hasdo river section E-W strike is prevalent and it changes to WNW-
ESE to NW-SE in the trans Hasdo section . A no. of small scale faults
which are mostly strick slip faults are recorded in different parts of the
district. The gneissic rock exhibits foliation trending in NNW-SSE and
E-W direction with vertical to subvertical dips on either side.
Mineral Wealth of the District
Korba district is furnished with many minerals in its different areas.
Coal is the most important mineral resource found in this district.
There are few numbers of coal belts in the region of korba. From korba
coal mines, coal is transported to Bhilai as well as korba plant. The
main area of Korba coal mines includes Surakachhar, Rajgamar,
Manikpur, Dhewadih, Kusmunda, Gevra project.
Bauxite is another mineral resource
found in this region which is the raw material for aluminium metal. It
was found in the area of Putka pahad in the district of Korba. In the
Putka pahad region bauxite ore alumina percentage was comparatively
more and can be classified as pink and brown pisolite bauxite. Bauxite
found in this region also contained Titanium. This particular type of
bauxite was formed from the Deccan Basalt lava. Apart from this other
varieties of boulders and bauxite are found in the Mahadev hills, Ladai
hills and Janta hills and the good type of pisolite bauxite is found in the
Ranikhet hills, pokhana hills and peaks of Karela, Gouri dulari, such
varieties of bauxite is found in Putka pahad. The uniqueness of the
bauxite found here in korba is that it contain less than 3% of silica, 8-
10% titania,55%alumina and 4-8% iron ore, few minor deposites of
fireclay, dolerite, granite are found in different areas of korba district.
Small deposits of limestone are found in Devlapath, Chicholi, Bagdar,
and Fuljhar village of Kartala Tahsil.

SOURCE OF THE DISTRICT
Korba district is blessed with many large and small rivers which drains
the length and breadth of the district.
The Hasdeo river is the main river which flows through the korba
district. Total length of Hasdeo river is 233 km, it is one of the main
tributary of Mahanadi River. This particular river originate from
Sonhat hill in Koriya district and flows through it. Its Tributaries
include Gaj, Ahiran, Jatashankar, Tan and Chornai. Hasdeo river and
its tributaries are the main source for the deposition of sand in the
district.

AGGREGATES OF THE DISTRICT
Korba district have many small and large rivers. Hasdeo is the main
river of korba, Hasdeo and its tributaries are the main source of
deposition of sand or gravel in the district.
12 nos. of sand quarries are sanctioned in this district out of which 03
nos. of quarries are not working. All the working quarries produced
330,300m3, 118,533m3 ,577,757m3 of sand in the year 2013-2014, 2014-
