Fireclay Tile is the leading ceramic tile company using recycled materials and sustainable

manufacturing practices. We make the highest quality, most durable and beautiful pleasing

hand-made ceramic materials using “old world” methods that are unique, affordable, and

“green.” We are based in San Jose, CA and the majority of our products are manufactured in the

United States.

Our unique product line includes:

Debris Tile (p. 7): Made of over 52% recycled content (27% post-consumer,

25% post-industrial), this unique tile line is made in Northern California using all

local materials. Available in over 112 natural glaze colors, numerous tile sizes, and

decorative patterns.

Vitrail (p. 10): Handmade, square-edged tile produced on white stoneware clay body

similar to stained glass from medieval Times. Vitrail’s high crackle semitransparent

glazes are rich and deep and tile is available in over 112 natural glaze colors and

numerous sizes and decorative patterns. Patine and Velvet Matte also available.

Claymonde (p. 14): Unique, futuristic large format tile (max 3’ x 6 ’) with straight

edges and very thin body that is flexible, easy to mount, and nearly perfectly flat.

Available in 32 colors and unlike anything else on the market.

Jelly Bean Rocks (p. 16): Mesh-mounted recycled glass and stone that come in small,

tumbled pieces with smooth edges and a beautiful unique look. Available in over 20

different styles.

Fireclay Tile manufactures a full line of field and trim tiles, along with an extensive

catalog of decorative tiles and architectural details. Tiles are extruded or hand-molded

from clays consisting of recycled materials, unprocessed stoneware clays, and minerals,

giving our products a truly natural look with lifelong durability. For the greatest strength

and consistency, we fire our tiles at over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit without significant

deformation (some color variation may occur). Glazes are mixed in-house and never contain

any lead material. We recycle our kiln heat, water, and all manufacturing waste is re-used in

other parts of our business.

It has been our greatest honor to have loyally served our customers for the past 23 years and

we look forward to many more to come.

Fireclay Tile was established in 1986 by four partners with over 50 years

of experience in the design and production of beautiful ceramic tiles. Paul

Burns, Fireclay’s Founder Chief Ceramicist, has been the majority partner

and president of Fireclay Tile since its inception.

Paul first started making tiles with his uncle, Ross Chichester,

the past president of Stonelight Tile, when he was only 10 years old. Paul

would work many Saturday’s and every summer growing up, learning all

aspects of handmade tile production from extrusion to glaze formulating

to kiln firing. By age 15, Paul was so skilled that Stonelight customers

would specifically ask for his help in creating their tile.

Since founding Fireclay, Paul has devoted his life to finding

more sustainable ways to make tile, focusing on everything from the

most sustainable manufacturing processes to the incorporation of

recycled content into his materials. Today, Fireclay Tile is the leading tile

company using recycled materials and sustainable practices, employing

over 25 employees in the United States.

I n n o v a t i o n s

Since inception Fireclay Tile has been one of the most innovative ceramic tile company in the world. A history of these innovations includes:

Leadless Glazes: In 1988 Fireclay Tile converted to a system of 100% leadless glazes. The first tile maker to make such a step at a time when leadless glaze technology was in its infancy.

Vulcanite: Fireclay Tile developed Vulcanite in 1997. Vulcanite was glazed and fired large format pieces of volcanic lava. Fireclay Tile was the only producer of glazed lava in the US. Vulcanite was discontinued in 2007.

Debris Tile: In 2000 Fireclay Tile began incorporating 25% post-industrial recycled content (granite dust) into its tile. Today, Debris Tile is composed of over 50% recycled content, the majority of which is post-consumer waste from glass bottles. The energy used to make Debris tiles is 50% that of many other tile manufacturers due to its high recycled content.

Claymonde: In 2003 Fireclay Tile developed Claymonde a super sized wall tile. Tiles as big as 35’’x70” and very thin for easy installation on walls and ceilings. Claymonde is made in 32 standard colors and numerous sizes.

BottleStone: In 2007 Fireclay Tile developed BottleStone, a new large format countertop tile made from over 80% glass bottles. BottleStone is currently being perfected and should be available by 2010.

10Vitrail

The Vitrail series is a handmade, square edged, tile produced on a white stoneware clay body. The

high crackle semitransparent glazes of the Vitrail series have a depth and richness that is reminiscent

of centuries old European stained glass.

The Vitrail series tile is extremely hard and durable and is strong enough for wall, floor and kitchen-counter use. Because of the highly crackled nature of the Vitrail series glazes, the tiles are sealed at our factory to safeguard against staining. Coffee, juices and other spilled liquids may stain the tile if it is left unsealed. Gloss tiles can make for a slippery floor surface, but by using a 4x4 or smaller tile size, numerous grout joints help reduce the slipperiness of a floor instillation. We recommend using a matte glazed tile in a complimentary color when floor traction is a concern.

All of our glazes are heat-sensitive and therefore vary somewhat from one tile to the next, even within the same batch firing. This variation is an important part of the inherent beauty of the Vitrail series. Before ordering, we recommend requesting samples that demonstrate color variation. If you do not want a tile with color variation, then the Vitrail series is not the tile for you. When matching paint colors, fabrics and wallpapers, it is best to purchase the tile first and then take it home so that your own personal lighting gives you the most accurate shade of color from which to work.

Patine Patine is a new variation of the Vitrail Series. It is a Vitrail tile with brown or black glaze rubbed into the crazing, giving the tile an antique stained look with old world crackles.

The patine series tile can be used in the same installations as Vitrail. The cost for this process is

only slightly higher than the regular Vitrail series.

Velvet MatteVelvet Matte is a new addition to the Vitrail series and is produced on the same white stoneware clay body. It has a rich velvet finish. The glazes are slightly crazed and the tiles will continue to craze over time. Because of the matte-like texture of the glaze, the crazing is hard to detect with the naked eye. We recommend that a penetrating sealer be applied to the tiles once a year in shower and kitchen counter applications.

The velvet matte glazes are vaguely transparent. You can see some of the white clay through the glazes. The clay body is more visible on the relief tiles and moldings.

Claymonde Claymonde is Fireclay Tile’s futuristic lightweight large format tile (max size of 3’ x 6‘). What

gives Claymonde the ability to be so large is its unique mixture of white clay and ceramic fiber

that is rolled into a 3/16” thick sheet. These large ceramic sheets are then bisque fired and cut to

size before being glazed. Since the tiles are cut to size right after being fired, the edges are straight

and consistent. The rolling process also makes the tile near perfectly flat! The ceramic fiber in the

clay gives the tile incredible flexibility and strength.

Claymonde standard sizes are 5 3/4” x 35 1/4”, 11 11/16” x 35 1/4” and 23 1/2” x 23 1/2”.

Also our standard 32 color palette is designed for easy mixing and matching of colors. Custom

colors are available.

Jelly Bean Rocks We started selling Jelly Bean Rocks to find additional uses for recycled glass bottles and provide

our customers with additionally unique products not found elsewhere. Today we have over

20 styles available including those with recycled materials, sea shells, or natural stone colors

(sometimes mixed).

Jelly Beans Rocks are available as 4x4 tile (square edge), 4x12 border (interlocking 4” edges) and 12x12 field tile (all edges interlocking).

We just added 8 new glass colors to the series for a total of 20. And we are using this same mesh-mount technique for different material such as marble, sea shells, stones and rocks.

1Cuerda Seca

Cuerda Seca is a Spanish term for wax resist handpainted decorative tiles. The wax line or dry cord keeps the

glazes from running together during kiln firing. Once the outline is applied to the tile, the glaze is eye dropped

in each separate area with a ceramic syringe. During firing the glazes melt and run up against the wax barrier

creating a subtle texture. Most of the time the outline is done with black wax. A clear wax line which exposes

the color of the tile body is available as a custom request. Almost all our Cuerda Seca tiles are produced on our

Debris body but clear line can be very attractive on our white body Vitrail Series.

The original idea for the Cuerda Seca technique came from Persia to Spain were it was refined then from Spain to California were it has been further refined to produce our tiles. Custom Cuerda Seca designs can be made at your request.

Raised pattern decoratives are hand-pressed tiles that have either a raised outline of the pattern or an embossed

pattern. A press is used so the patterns are more consistent in appearance than relief tiles. The raised patterns

usually have a low background and the design is “raised”, but all raised areas are the same height, unlike our

relief tile which can have varied heights and depths. The raised clay outline keeps the different glaze colors form

running together during the kiln firing process.

The Moors and Spain originated this technique called “cuenca” Many of the Arts & Crafts decorative tiles

produced in California in the 1920’s and the 1940’s were made in the cuenca technique. The cuenca technique

allows us to use the same glazes we use in our field tiles and moldings. Colors must be chosen from either

Debris series or Vitrail series for raised decoratives.

The detail of the raised pattern designs is accentuated by wash and rubbed glazes. Not all raised tiles are offered

in rubbed. A few designs are produced with a debossed method. The design is sunken into the clay. The glaze

pools into these sunken areas. The raised pattern decoratives may vary slightly in size and color from the plain

field tiles.

Relief Decorative Tile Relief tiles are three-dimensional sculpted tiles. Each piece is individually hand pressed into a plaster

mold. Because of the old world techniques used in making the relief tiles, they often vary slightly in

size and squareness. The decorative cap pieces vary the most due to their complexity. In general, the

tiles have a higher, more sculpted relief and can have several heights and depths when compared to our

raised pattern tiles.

Stop pieces, out corners and picture frame corners are available in most designs. Relief tiles are offered in Debris, Vitrail, Rubbed and Multicolor. The glaze runs off high relief areas and pool in the background sometimes creating a many-toned effect.

Over 70 different moldings are available. The standard length is six inches. Four inch

moulding piece are also available and are priced the same as six-inch moldings. Eight-inch

and twelve-inch molding are special order items, please call for availability and lead time.

Each molding style has a letter or number designation. Molding cap pieces are available for

most of the molding styles. The word “cap” after the molding means the piece can be used

as a vanity or kitchen cap. The drop of the cap varies depending on the molding piece. The

edge cap generally has a one-inch lip. If the pieces are to be used as a wainscot, the cap lip

can be made smaller. Please specify you exact requirements.

Outside 90-degree corners, stop ends and picture frame corners (PFC) are available in

all molding styles. A layout drawing may be necessary to communicate the exact type of

picture frame corner required.

During the firing process the glaze will run and pool in the lower recesses on molding

pieces, especially those with curved surfaces. This causes some color variation on theses

pieces. Debris and Vitrail glazes appear light and dark depending on the manner in which

the glaze pools on each molding piece.

Ropes decoratives are individually hand-pressed in a plaster mold. Due to the old world techniques used in

making the ropes, they vary is size and straightness. Available also in caps, which can be used for a kitchen

counter top or bathroom vanity. Rope caps are priced at 50% more than the rope piece price. All ropes are

available in Debris and Vitrail clay bodies also in Rubbed and Multicolored glazes styles. During the firing

process the glaze will run and pool in the lower recesses, creating lighter and darker areas on each piece.
