The interface module provides the physical connection between the Signaling
Advisor and the network you are testing. The interface module extracts the signaling
information from up to four duplex links and adds a timestamp to the captured data
before routing it to the Signaling Advisor for storage and analysis.
Sources of information about the Signaling Advisor
The documentation supplied is listed below:
Mainframe Reference Manual - This manual describes the Signaling Advisor
hardware. It also covers the connection and configuration of accessories via PC
Cards in the PCMCIA slots.
Users Manual - This manual tells you how to use the Signaling Advisor to monitor
and emulate signaling data, view and interpret the results.
Software Recovery Guide - This manual provides detailed instructions for rein-
stalling Windows and the Signaling Advisor System Software. (Note: Your instru-

Installing an Interface Module
Installing an Interface Module
You can have up to two modules installed in your Signaling Advisor. However, the
number of modules can be extended by up to two if you have an undercradle fitted. The
modules operate in either slot. If only one module is fitted to your Signaling Advisor
then a Filler Panel must be fitted to the empty slot.
WAR NI NG If this product is not used as specified, the protection provided by the product
could be impaired. This product must be used in a normal condition only (in
which all means for protection are intact).
CAUTION To prevent possible system errors, you must turn off the power to the Signaling
Advisor before installing or removing a module.
To install a module (or Filler Panel) into a Signaling Advisor:
1 Ensure the Module Release Latch is in the unlocked position.
2 Fit and slide the module (or Filler Panel) into the opening on the side of the
instrument, see the following figure.
3 Push the module firmly into place until it is seated (the Module Release Latch
automatically moves to the locked position). If you are fitting a Filler Panel, you will
need to manually move the Module Release Latch to its locked position.

Installing an Interface Module
To remove an interface module (or Filler Panel) from a Signaling Advisor:
1 Depress the left end of the Module Release Latch (labeled PUSH TO UNLOCK)
then slide the latch to the left end (unlocked position).
2 Pull the module (or Filler Panel) out of the module.
To install an interface module into an undercradle:
1 Switch off the power to the instrument.
2 Fit and slide the module into the opening of the undercradle.
3 Push it into place until it is seated, see the figure below.
To remove an interface module from an undercradle:
1 Slide the Module Release Latch towards the left.
2 Pull the module out of the undercradle.

Connecting Interface Modules to Bearers
Connections to the network are made with the two connectors on the interface module.
Each connector provides two V.35/RS-449/RS-232 full duplex links in Monitor mode.
In Emulate mode, the interface module can transmit V.35/RS-449/RS-232 signals.
CAUTION The ports on this module go low impedance when the Signaling Advisor is switched
off. If any port is connected to an unprotected monitor point, disconnect the cable
from the Signaling Advisor before powering off, otherwise the low impedance state
could adversely affect the network.
CAUTION When connecting or disconnecting, ensure that you are grounded or, make contact
with the metal surface of the mainframe with your free hand to bring you, the module,and the Signaling Advisor to the same static potential. Modules remain susceptible
to ESD damage while the module is installed in the Signaling Advisor. Additional
ESD precautions are required when servicing, see page 29.
NOTE The Bearer settings will be disabled when there is no adapter cable fitted, or when an
invalid or unsupported cable is fitted, or when the loopback connector is fitted.

Connecting to a V35, RS-449 or RS-232 Network Monitor Point
The module is automatically configured for a V.35, RS-449 or RS-232 network when
you switch on the Signaling Advisor and the appropriate V.35, RS-449 or RS-232
adapter cable is fitted to the module via the J4208A cable. The adapter cable currently
being used and the other module settings are displayed in the Signaling Advisors
Bearer view.
CAUTION The ports on this module go low impedance when the Signaling Advisor is switched
off. If any port is connected to an unprotected monitor point, disconnect the cablefrom the Signaling Advisor before powering off, otherwise the low impedance state
could adversely affect the network.

The following diagram shows how you make a bridged connection on a duplex link
when a monitor point is available.
The maximum combined length for the link plus drop cable is 15 m (RS-232), 1200 m
(RS-449) and 100 m (V.35).

Connecting for End Emulation
In Emulate mode, you can send and receive messages to/from another piece of
Network Equipment. The Signaling Advisor terminates the Receive side of the Bearer
and generates V.35/RS-449/RS-232 compatible signals on the Transmit side. Maximum
cable length depends on cable quality and will typically be >15 m (RS-232), >1200 m
(RS-449) and >100 m (V.35)
For more information on configuring the Signaling Advisors V.35/RS-449/RS-232
bearer settings in Emulate mode, refer to the instruments On-Line Help.

Verifying Correct Operation
Verifying Correct Operation
Description
You verify correct operation in Post Capture mode, by selecting All Tests from the
Signaling Advisors built-in Self Test function. When you select All Tests, the
program automatically detects which interface module(s) are housed in the Signaling
Advisor, it then selects and runs the appropriate self tests. It takes approximately 15
minutes to verify each interface module. The default settings are used which means
tests will continue to completion (even if an error is detected), and all results (Pass or
Fail) will be logged to disk.
For a detailed description of Self Test, refer to the instruments On-Line Help.
CAUTION To prevent network disruptions, ensure the Signaling Advisor is disconnected from
your network before you run Self Tests.
Verification Prerequisites
During Self Test you will be prompted to fit external loopback cables.
To minimize verification time ensure that you have following cables available before
you start the Self Test:
Self Test Loopback connector, part number Agilent J4204A.
Clock loopback cable (connects to the Signaling Advisor CLOCK/TRIG IN and
OUT ports), part number Agilent 8120-8820.
Telephone handset (this is an optional connection), part number Agilent 15722A.

1 Double-click the Signaling Advisor icon in the desktop.
2 Click the Post Capture button.
3 Click on the Tools menu, then select Self Tests.

5 Test progress and results can be viewed on the screen. A full set of results is available
from the specified log file.

ESD Precautions
CAUTION When making connections to the modules, review Connecting Interface Modules to
Bearers, Page 7.
The module contains components sensitive to electrostatic discharge.
To prevent component damage, carefully follow the handling precautions presentedbelow.
The smallest static voltage most people can feel is about 3500 volts. It takes less than
one tenth of that (about 300 volts) to destroy or severely damage static sensitive
circuits. Often, static damage does not immediately cause a malfunction but
significantly reduces the components life. Adhering to the following precautions will
reduce the risk of static discharge damage.
Keep the module in its conductive storage box when not installed in the Signaling
Advisor. Save the box for future storage of the module.
Before handling the module, select a work area where potential static sources are
minimized. Avoid working in carpeted areas and non-conductive chairs. Keep body
movement to a minimum. Agilent recommends that you use a controlled static work-
station.
Handle the module by its front-panel. Avoid touching any components or edge con-
nectors. When you install the module, keep one hand in contact with the protectivebag as you pick up the module with your other hand. Then, before installing the mod-
ule, ensure that you are grounded or make contact with the metal surface of the Sig-
naling Advisor with your free hand to bring you, the module, and the Signaling
Advisor to the same static potential. This also applies whenever you connect/dis-
connect cables on the front-panel.
Cleaning the Product
Use a soft, clean damp cloth to clean the outer surfaces.

This product does not require periodic calibration. Operational verification can be
confirmed by running the built-in Self Test, see page 22.
Operating Environment
This product is designed for indoor use only.
DO NOT operate the product in an explosive atmosphere or in the presence of
flammable gasses or fumes.
This product may be operated in environments within the following limits:
Temperature: +5o C to +40o C
Altitude up to 4,600 m
Humidity 20% to 80% relative humidity non condensing to 40oC. This
product should be protected from temperature extremes which may
cause condensation within the product enclosure.
To ensure adequate cooling do not obstruct air vents in the product cabinet. Air vents
are located at the front, on the underside and both sides of the product.
CAUTION This product is designed for use in Installation Category II and Pollution Degree 2
per IEC 61010 and 60664 respectively.

This product should be protected from temperature extremes which could cause

Returning for Service
When returning this product for service, please include the Signaling Advisor and
accessory cables.Tagging for Service. If the module is being returned to Agilent for service, please
complete a repair tag and attach it to the module. Ensure the following information is
sent with it:
Description of the problem (include the self-test results file, error messages or
specific performance data related to the problem).
Whether the problem is constant or intermittent.
Name and phone number of technical contact person.
Return address.
Model and option number of returned Signaling Advisor and module(s).
Full serial numbers of returned Signaling Advisor and module(s).
Mark shipping container FRAGILE to ensure careful handling.
Original Packaging. Containers and materials identical to those used in factory
packaging are available from Agilent offices.
Other Packaging. The following general instructions should be followed when
repackaging with commercially available materials:
Wrap instrument in heavy paper or plastic.
Use a strong shipping container. A double wall carton made of 350 pound test
material is adequate.

all sides of the instrument to provide firm cushioning and prevent movementinside the container. Do not rely on pellets for shock absorption, as during transit
the instrument will sink to the bottom of the pellets.
