Phase Separators
Sintered bronzed filter which can be attached to a nitrogen transfer line. Aids liquid nitrogen delivery by
separating liquid from vapour, preventing dangerous splashing.
Dipstick
This simple, yet effective dipstick provides accurate indication of liquid helium depth. Stainless steel
construction with a fine rubber diaphragm, held in place by an ‘O’ ring over the cup-shaped upper end
of the dipstick.
The thermal gradient set up in the tube leads to thermal oscillations, which are felt by the vibration
of the membrane. The frequency of the oscillation with the lower end in liquid helium is noticeably
lower than that when it is in cold gas, allowing the liquid level to be determined easily (in most cases).
The dipstick should not be left in the cryostat when it is not in use because it introduces a large
amount of heat.

General Purpose Transfer Tubes (TTN Series)
A comprehensive range of transfer tubes is
available for normal short duration transfer.
Constructed of high quality stainless steel
tubing, vacuum insulated, they are available in
rigid, demountable and flexible forms.
Typical flow rates of 1 l/min at 0.1 bar are
achieved.
All are supplied with pump out fittings and
removable siphon nozzles. Threaded siphon
leg ends permit use of extension tubes when
required.
These transfer tubes are compatible with dewar
top fitting SV10.

The LLT liquid helium transfer tubes have been
developed specifically for use with Oxford Instruments’
continuous flow (CF) cryostats. These transfer tubes
incorporate the design principles, practices and
materials of our Low Loss technology resulting in
significant user benefits:
a) Savings in running costs due to low liquid helium
consumption
b) Extended operating range to 2 K
c) Automated operation for LLT 650 and LLT 750 models
Use of an LLT transfer line will reduce the consumption
of liquid helium and extend the base temperature of
the cryostat. A base temperature of better than 2.5 K is
normally attainable.

Auto Needle Valve Upgrade Kit
This upgrade kit, for use with the LLT transfer tubes, enables automated cryogen flow control. The kit
comprises a motor/gear box assembly, which replaces the manual adjustment knob. A supplied interface
cable connects the motor to an Oxford Instruments temperature controller.
The temperature controller determines the proper
cryogen flow and heater current to obtain optimum
cryostat performance at the established temperature
target. Thus the automated needle valve provides
hands-off cryostat operation from 2 K to 500 K.

Transfer Tube Accessories
A range of upgrade items

cryogen transfer tubes
Dewar Top Fittings
The SV fitting provides an interface between
a transfer tube and the storage vessel neck.
The fitting includes a pressurising point (1) for
connection to either a helium gas line or rubber
bladder, and a vent valve (2).
The SV fitting adapts to vessel necks with either
a standard NW 25 flange or a plain 19 mm
diameter tube. The SV10 suits all transfer tubes
with a 9.5 mm diameter leg while the SV12 is
for the LLT and TTL product range which have
12 mm legs.

TTL Lightweight Transfer Tubes
The TTL type transfer siphon is designed for use when
flexibility and light weight are primary considerations. The
gas flow is exhausted from the side arm of the sample
cryostat through a vent port. This enables a lightweight and
flexible design but increases the base temperature cryogen
consumption by approximately 20%.

The manostat is an automatic pressure controller designed to
control the pressure in a cryostat reservoir when operating below
atmospheric pressure (i.e. below the normal boiling point of the
cryogen), thus maintaining a constant temperature.
Operating principle
As the cryostat pressure falls below the reference pressure the
diaphragm closes the control orifice and restricts the pumping
speed, maintaining a constant pressure.
Temperature stability of better than ±0.1 K can be maintained over long periods in helium cryostats
over the range 1.5 to 4.2 K.
This unit provides electronic control of the control valve. Thus, desired pressure conditions are
maintained continuously. An alarm function monitors the difference between the setpoint and the
measured pressure value. The instrument also features a self-check
and diagnosis procedure. The unit can be remote controlled via a
RS-232 port and/or configured for use with Labview.

VC31 Gas Flow Controller
The VC31 flow controller is designed to monitor helium gas
flow and consists of a vacuum gauge, needle valve and flow
meter. The gas passes through the needle valve to the gas
pump and then through the flow meter (0 to 2.5 equivalent
liquid litres/hr) on its way to the recovery line.
The flow controller should be used in conjunction with the
GF3 or GF4 pump. (Page 80)

VC41 Gas Flow Controller
The VC41 flow controller is similar to the VC 31, however it
contains two coupled flow meters, one calibrated for helium
gas (0 to 2.5 litres/hr, liquid equivalent), the other for nitrogen
(0 to 5 litres/min, gas flow).

Direct-acting Cryogenic Solenoid Valve
This direct-acting solenoid valve is specifically
designed for cryogenic operation. The design
incorporates a high-strength forged brass body
with a sealed stainless steel plunger on a P.T.F.E.
seating.
The valve may be used to switch liquid nitrogen
and liquid argon (not oxygen) with a service
pressure up to 2.8 Kg cm2 and is ideally suited
to level control applications in, for instance, cold
traps for pumping systems.
Applications
Switching liquid nitrogen and liquid argon,
interfacing directly with Oxford Instruments
nitrogen level meters.
Operation
Normally closed, opens when energised.
