On the eve of Mother’s Day and graduations, here are
some thoughts for you: tattoos… blue hair… detention slips…
mini-skirts… broken curfews… baggy jeans. Let’s just put it
out there ~ being a mother is tough! You have to mediate,
motivate, and maturate. You laugh at the same silly joke for
the 100th time. You take an interest in snakes and frogs and
you have a working knowledge of hairstyling. As if that
weren’t enough, you are now called to understand the
dangers of technology when you can barely operate your cell
phone. But the most aggravating thing of all is knowing that
we put our parents through the same thing.
I once heard someone say that parenting is very little
happiness wrapped up in great joy. How does God do
it? How does God put up with our mood swings, our
stubbornness, and our risky behaviors? How do we fathom a
love that is ultimate patience and hope wrapped up in grace
and forgiveness?
This Mother’s Day, remember that God loves you. The
brokenness of your spirit is where God waits for you. The
stain of this life of flesh is what God will transform into
beauty. The dandelion prayers you bring God in your tightly
held fists are a joy to the One who nurtures you.
Children need patience and support. Turns out – so do
mothers.
God bless those who nurture and care for creation.
Blessings,
Pastor sue

Stepping Up our Ministry Spring is just around the corner and for many that means NEW SHOES! WCC is collecting gently used
shoes to distribute overseas to those in need (Haiti, Honduras, and Tanzania). This will be our major mission and fundraiser this year. The shoes provide free inventory to people starting businesses in the developing world, and we will receive .40 cents for every pound we collect.
Please save your old shoes... ask your neighbors to donate theirs... and your kids and grandkids. Mention it to your hairstylist and coworkers. Post flyers in your apartment complex or at your gym. Ask them to set out a box where people can drop off their shoes. You can bring the donated shoes to the church or let someone from the church know and we will pick them up.
We will accept ANY size and ANY style. All that is required is that there is a sole and a mate. We hope to collect a ton of shoes - literally! This is a great way to be in ministry and help support our budget.
May God bless our efforts!
Stewardship Team
Stepping Up our Ministry Shoe Drive! Again this year Waukee Christian Church will be collecting shoes to send overseas
to developing nations. Remember, this mission reduces waste in our nation’s landfill while also
helping people become financially stable and self-supporting. Last year we collected just over 7,200
pairs of shoes! What a difference this makes in the lives of people who have far less than we have
been blessed with. This year, let’s break our own record! Clean your closets… tell your neighbors…
hang a poster… set out a box… do whatever you can to help out. Flyers and door hangers are
available in the narthex! Please recruit your neighbors and the businesses you patronize.
On May 17th, June 14th, and July 19th, we will again have a WORKSHIP services. This means a
shortened formal time in the sanctuary so we can gather in Fellowship Hall to bagshoes.
We will accept ANY size and ANY style. All that is required is that there is a sole and a mate.
We hope to collect a ton of shoes - literally! This is a great way to be in ministry and help support
our budget.
May God bless our efforts!

Who Is Pastor Julie?
I come from a rural background. My parents Ivan and Rachel Gilmore (both deceased) were
farmers in the Linden, IA area. I grew up with two sisters, twin Joan and younger sister Janice.
I worked in communications starting at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co and then retiring after 34
plus years from Qwest.
I married Jerry Cornelius on Sept. 20, 1975. Jerry passed in November 2000 from the ALS. We
had one daughter, Jennifer Jo, who is married to Jeff Stanbrough (Yes, Jeff is Gene Stanbrough’s
grandson). I have two grandchildren Jase (9) and Jordana (4). They live in Urbandale.
I moved to the Waukee/Urbandale area about three years ago (from Bagley after more than 36).
This lets me be closer to my immediate family whom I love so much.
I came to the Christian church via the Church of Christ. Jerry and I transferred our membership
to Central Christian Church, Jefferson, IA in 1999. I was “called” into a more specialized ministry and
was accepted into the Licensed Ministry Education Program affiliated with the Christian Church in the
Upper Midwest (Disciples of Christ). I completed studies and received my Ministerial License in
October 2007. I am a Commissioned Minister with Standing in the CCUM.
From that time until November 2014, I also served as Visitation Minister at Central Christian
Church, Jefferson, IA.
I became a member of Waukee Christian Church, March 22, 2015.
Why Visitation Ministry?
I have had experience as an elder and board chair and on worship, stewardship and memorial
committees. I’ve also sponsored Chi Rho. BUT Visitation Ministry is my passion. I have a deep
understanding of and compassion for those struggling with health and becoming frail, lonely or
depressed, or lost. I have spent many hours in prayer, visiting and caring for the needs of others in
their homes, nursing or retirement facilities, and hospitals. I intentionally serve/visit those that
cannot attend services and events but still are an intricate part of the church community. We cannot
ignore those who love God and His church when their bodies are frail.
Please allow me to serve the “One who loves us most” in this capacity with this community of
believers. I trust the blessing will be two-fold!
Pastor Julie
Pastor Julie Cornelius - Visiting Ministry
Recently we were blessed to have Rev. Julie Cornelius join us at WCC.
Many of you have had the opportunity to meet and visit with Julie - which is
how she likes it. Pastor Julie has a passion for Visiting Ministry - and that’s
why the Board was so pleased to appoint her the WCC Visiting Minister. She
will be assisting Pastor Sue in calling on the sick and home bound. Please
welcome her in love. Who is Pastor Julie? We thought we would let her
introduce herself to you…

Service Workship – Church Inside Out I wonder what it would be like if the rest of Waukee knew how
God has blessed us. I wonder if they would feel called to join us as
we try to walk in faith. Why don’t we tell them? What would happen
if we took our Worship outside the walls of this building? Let’s find
out!
On May 17th, we will turn our worship Inside-Out as we go out
into the community to spread love and minister to creation. We will
not have formal worship here that morning – but we will be doing
ministry! We will gather for a brief blessing and then go to various
locations. You can sign up to serve on one of the following:
AHeinz 57 Pet Shelter: groom animals, clean as needed, stock
shelves ( 4-5 people)
Bike path clean up: walk along the path next to our church and
pick up trash (10 people)
City park clean up: rake leaves, clean up litter, spruce up a flower
bed (10 people)
Legacy Point Care Facility: visit shut ins and take them a greeting
from the church (3-5 people)
Hope Ministries desserts: provide fresh homemade cookies or
bars and then deliver to Hope Ministries (Many bakers ahead of
time and 3 people to deliver that day)
Home-bound ministry: provide light yard work or inside
maintenance, such as changing light bulbs, to members of our
church family who request assistance (5-10 people needed. )
o Contact Pastor Julie Cornenlius at

Brown Bag Brigade: a group to remain at the church to bag shoes
and prepare lunch. (Lorrie Grandgenett coordinating)
We will return to the church for a noon lunch and to share our
ministry experiences. Remember to wear your Church t-shirts!
(order one if you need it). We hope to make this a tradition by
turning our Worship Service into Service Worship – Inside Out – two
or three times a year!
Spring Clean Up will be the morning of
May 9th. Bring a rake, work gloves, and
some cleaning supplies. We’ll be polishing
things up and dusting things off! We
also would like to complete an inventory

Hi all Waukee Christians!
Wish I could be there to give you a big hug – but since that cannot be, I’ll
just send a piece of paper to tell you I have so-o-o-o many happy memories of my time with you all!
God Bless You all ~ and keep up the good work.
And if you’re ever in Peoria, IL
please come to Hillside Village for a week or two (at least!).
Love You, Ginny Thomas
The WoW (Women of Waukee) Garden Party held on
April 18, 2015 was a huge success. The second annual
community wide event had 72 attendees with
approximately half the attendees non-members of the
church. Fellowship hall was decorated with bird houses
from Evelyn Dowell’s collection and fresh flowers which
gave the space a spring atmosphere. WoW members served
a hash-brown casserole, fruit kabobs, a quick bread
assortment, and of course tea. Tammy Hardersen was the
master of ceremonies, Vicki Teas sang a solo about lilies,
and Jane Venard gave a presentation about growing lilies.
Jane is a member of the Waukee Garden Club. Discussions
are already underway about planning for next year. It will
be difficult to top this year’s event.
Join us on May 13th and 27th at
1:00 pm to make crafts to be sold
at the Quilt and Craft Show in the
fall.
Waukee Christian Church will be
hosting 2 vendor fairs in June
after worship: June 7th and 14th.
The vendors will be donating 100%
of the profits to the Youth Group.
Call the office if you would like a
to reserve a table and go to our
website or fb page to see a list of
vendors.

Easter Baskets of Love – THANK YOU This year was another successful year at Waukee Area
Christian Services 8th annual Easter Baskets of Love drive!
Because of your help we were able to bless 143 children. I have
always said it’s not about the baskets or what we give and to how
many; rather it’s how we can show God’s love in a small way.
The generous support of the families we serve and the care
for people in the community is evident through efforts like these
baskets. We could not have been so successful without
everyone’s kindness.
Thank you again to all who participated including our partner
churches, Waukee Family YMCA, and the many volunteers who
helped sort, assemble and distribute!

Can you count? Volunteers are needed to help count the morning offering. If you are an Elder or on the Board, can you help in the rotation? George Risinger and Jerry Woods have been serving for over a year, but it means they often miss fellowship time. Please consider taking your turn and visit with George or Jerry.
Can you click? We only have a couple of people who operate the slide show on Sunday morning. It’s very easy! Just push a button. Training is provided. Let Pastor Sue know if you can take a turn in the AV booth.
