Diggingwellsandcisternstocollectrainwaterwastheprimarymeansofgettingwaterthroughoutmostsettlements.Waterwasnotapopularbeverageduringthosedays.AgirlfromBarbadosboardingwithhergrandmotherin1714whiletheeight‐year‐oldattendedschoolinBoston,complainedtoherfatherthatgrandmotherwasmakingherdrinkwater.Dadwrotebackandinsistedthatshegetbeerorwineasbefittedherstation.

Thisdistasteforwatergoesbacktothemedievalnotionthatwatercausedthechillsandothersickness.Themorelikelyreasonwasthattheprivyandthelocalwellweretooclosetogetherandspawnedcholeraandtyphoidinstead.

Earlywatermainsweremadeofbored‐outlogs.Sagsinthelogallowedwatertostagnate,becomeinfestedwithinsects,andgenerallyleaveawoodytaste.
