Crazy Quilters' Quilt Guild
No. 295 www.crazyquilters.org February 2016
From the President Tami Jones
Well, we made it through one winter meeting without
having to cancel! There are only two more winter
meetings to go. I was not able to stay at the January
meeting but it appeared to me that we had a great
turnout for such a cold night. I understand Anne,
Barb and Sharon did a great job presenting their
individual techniques, so thank you to them. Kathie
has a great community service night planned for the
February meeting, as well as a workshop planned for
January 23rd
at the church.
The library will continue in good hands with Michele
McLaughlin and Barb Seely taking over the co-
chairmanship of the committee. Maxine and Allen
have done such a GREAT job with the library over
the years. They will be hard to follow and truly
missed. Once warmer weather returns, they will
come back for a visit.
One good thing about the winter months is that I tend
to get some projects finished. I am happy to
announce I have completed my 2016 guild challenge.
Now I would like to work on a project for the
Allentown Art Museum exhibition the guild will be
having this summer.
The next board meeting will be on February 2 at
6pm, right before our regular monthly meeting.

Community Service Kathie Laposata
Our February meeting will again feature a pillowcase
race for pillowcases for hospitalized children and
teenagers. We will sew kits that have been made with
donated and purchased fabric, and you can also deliver
any pillowcases you’ve made with your own fabric.
Remember to wash the completed pillowcases in
unscented detergent and seal in a Ziploc bag. The
pillowcase instructions can be found at:
http://caseforsmiles.org/wp-
content/uploads/2015/09/Case-for-Smiles-Hot-Dog-
Instructions-final.pdf
We will have some precut flannel kits for preemie
quilts that you can pick up at the February meeting.
We will be collecting them in March.
For those of you who are planning to make a Camp
Erin quilt and haven’t yet picked out fabric, the local
coordinator said that they have a great need for quilts
for boys or quilts that would be appreciated by either a
girl or boy.
Finally, I’d like to note how much our community
service effort will miss the contributions of Maxine
Bernstein, as she and Alan plan their upcoming move
from the Lehigh Valley. Maxine made breast cancer
pillows year round. She asked me to stop by recently
and gave me three Camp Erin quilts and a veteran’s
quilt. She said that she hopes that any new guild that
she joins will have the enthusiasm for community
service that Crazy Quilters has. If not, I’m sure she
will inspire them. Thanks, Maxine.

Our March studio will be easy ways to tie a quilt. We will demo tying a small quilt. If you have a technique you use
and would like to share, please come. To practice this technique you will need a large eye needle and small scissors.
I am planning for future sessions for quilter’s studio. If you have a trick to share or something you would like to learn
please email your thoughts..
Membership Roberta Whitcomb and Karen Hartzell
Round robin demonstrations were the focus of January's meeting where 42 CQ members participated, starting off the
New Year on the right foot. Twenty-seven name tags were worn, and Nancy Dunham won the name tag gift, a charm
pack case. Can't you see Pat Sloan wanting more than just one of those "charming" cases?
Of the 100 quilt guilds in Pennsylvania, we're happy you've chosen to belong to CQ!

Blocks and Swaps Kathie Laposata
The February 2016 block is a Split Nine Patch in blues and greens. The instructions are in a separate attachment. I’ve
already collected 28 blocks, so make a few of your own to get a chance to win
Crazy Quilters' Page 5
February 2016 Block – Split Nine Patch Our February 2016 block is one that I’m calling Split Nine Patch. Give your block(s) to Kathie Laposata at either the January or
February meeting. The winner will be drawn at the February meeting. You don’t have to be present to win.
Block: Split Nine Patch (8 by 8 inch finished size). You can make up to 10 blocks for more chances to win. The cutting
directions are for two blocks, so this month you can make pairs of identical blocks.
Color theme: Blues and greens.
Fabric requirements:
You will use two fabrics that have a good level of contrast so that the design of the pattern stands out. The fabrics can be any
shade of blue or green. As shown in my examples above, you can use two blues, two greens or a blue and a green. You can use
solids, tone on tones, or a print that from across the room would ‘read’ as blue or green.
Cutting Directions – these directions are for making two
identical blocks. If you only want to make one block, you can
cut half as many pieces, except for the 5 inch squares.
2-1/2 by 4-1/2 inch rectangles. Cut 4 darks and 4 lights.
2-1/2 by 2-1/2 inch squares. Cut 2 darks and 2 lights.
3 by 3 inch squares. Cut 2 darks and 2 lights.
5 by 5 inch squares. Cut 1 dark and 1 light.
Crazy Quilters' Page 6
Construction
Step 1 – To make the half square triangle parts of the block,
Pair the 3 inch dark and light squares, right sides together. Draw a diagonal line, and sew one-quarter inch
on either side of the line. Cut on the drawn line. Press and square up to 2-1/2 inch half square triangles.
Pair the 5 inch dark and light squares, right sides together. Draw a diagonal line, and sew one-quarter inch
on either side of the line. Cut on the drawn line. Press and square up to 4-1/2 inch half square triangles.
Step 2 – Pair the dark and light rectangles and sew together on the long side of the rectangle. Press seam.
Crazy Quilters' Page 7
Step 3 - Lay out the HSTs, squares and rectangles as shown in the finished blocks below and sew together. Take care that the
dark and light parts of your block match the locations as shown below. In general the darker parts of the block are in the left
and bottom. The block should measure 8-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches at this point, so that it will finish at 8 by 8 inches.
