PROJECT SUMMARY A Natural Ventilation and Day Lighting Proposal has been undertaken for this project, on the basis of natural ventilation being considered the default strategy for school ventilation by the DCSF (Department for Children, Schools and Families). This report outlines our proposal for your consideration, summarised within the tables at the back of this document. The main building is a two-storey primary school development. The Assembly Hall will use displacement ventilation via roof-mounted terminals with separated chambers to channel air down into the building regardless of wind direction. The cooler, denser external air displaces warmer, lighter air upwards, which is drawn out through the leeward chambers of the terminals. This system can be used to provide free night time cooling when required. Low level motorised louvres / manual opening windows are also provided to assist the system. PROPOSAL ASSUMPTIONS The following assumptions have been made in respect of the design of this building, with regard to the usage and occupancy levels as detailed in the design information provided by the client: Wind speed data is referenced from CIBSE Guide Book A. For example using urban conditions (Ks = 0.35, a = 0.25) with a 50% of hourly means wind speed of 4m/s and a building eves height of 5m provides a site mean wind speed of 2.1m/s. This project has been calculated using urban conditions. Building Regulations require that background ventilation be provided to maintain good indoor air quality during the winter period. It is the responsibility of the client to confirm that this flow rate will achieve internal comfort conditions. Thermal mass, solar shading, glazing material and floor to ceiling heights are all aspects that can be addressed to reduce internal peak temperatures.
Room Type Ventilation Flow Rates Occupancy
Level Background Rapid Assembly Hall (Main / Dining)1 3 l/s/p - 100 1. The Schools Premises Regulations
CALCULATION METHOD The Airscoop calculation tool predicts the ventilation flow performance of Passivent Airscoop wind driven ventilation terminals. Its is based on the first principle formulas developed for the EDSL (TAS Software) ‘Passivent Airscoop Builder’. It was possible to construct this calculator after many years of extensive site testing of Airscoops at the Silsoe Research Institute. The calculation tool predicts the flow performance of the Airscoop wind driven ventilators when also using low level façade openings, if available. The flow performance is calculated for 16 equally spaced wind directions around 360 degrees. These are then averaged to provide an overall flow performance.

CONTROL PANELS
Correct control of components in a natural ventilation system is essential if it is to provide effective ventilation at minimum energy cost. Passivent provide a range of controls from basic to enhanced systems especially developed for natural ventilation. Passivent suggest that an iC8000 Controller is to be provided. The Passivent iC8000 (Intelligent Controller) 24V modulating, supplied standard with external night cooling, heating interlock and fire interlock, external temperature sensor and portable display interface screen to adjust settings on site (with pass code). Supplied as 2 Zone Panel Modules / 4 Zone Panel Modules. Supplied with combined CO2 and averaging temperature sensor. Supplied as BACnet (MS/TP) Enabled for internal communication and to allow read/write communication with a central BMS system. Preloaded with Passivent Natural Ventilation control software featuring a compensated internal temperature adjustment based on external temperature for seasonal variations and CO2 regime control when heating enabled (when CO2 present). DESIGN RESPONSIBILITY
This Natural Ventilation and Day Lighting proposal produced by Passivent, is offered as an advisory service and supersedes any previous Passivent design recommendations, written or oral. Any Proposal Assumptions noted above for the project should be read and verified. Any alterations to the design and the proposal assumptions should be notified to Passivent to ensure that ventilation proposal can be amended accordingly. A member of the Project Design team will usually submit a detailed design package to building control to demonstrate that the requirements for ventilation design and overheating analysis have been met. Passivent can be engaged as part of the Design team to undertake detailed thermal modelling analysis to support this submission. Passivent can offer a 12 year Design Warranty (on application) for the ventilation system, details available on request. This includes ventilation flow predictions and classroom overheating analysis.

Notes:
- See quotation for product sizing and quantities. Product information about geometric free areas and cd values are also available. - All diffuser components are motorised with 24V (0-10V signal) actuators and provide thermal insulation when closed. - Airscoops are predominantly wind driven devices and should not be placed in sheltered locations, as this will reduce their effectiveness. - Please confer with the project acoustic consultant to ensure that the dB levels are meet for the relevant spaces, using the data supplied.
