Thank you for taking the time to look through our Hotel Management and Hospitality Course Guide. Whether you intend to study for general interest, or with a career in mind this guide will assist you in making an informed decision regarding your career and future.
The Australian Institute of Applied Sciences is a tertiary provider of education and training. The AIAS College of Hospitality campus provides
state-of-the-art facilities that have been designed
specifically for the delivery of quality educational
outcomes and the provision of excellence in all facets of
hospitality. Students are taught by a variety of professional
lecturers, educators and trainers who have expertise in
the many areas of hospitality and hotel management.
Our lecturers are supported by friendly and professional
administration and support staff who are there to assist
students in the achievement of their goals.
The Institute is located in the heart of Stones Corner,
some ten (10) minutes from the Brisbane CBD. We are
on all of the major southside bus routes, with Buranda
railway station only minutes walk from our Campus.
In addition to our classrooms, lecture theatres, library
and computer facilities, the Institute houses a number of
practical specialty areas of training from state-of-the-art
Hairdressing training, Beauty Therapy, Massage training,
Natural Medicine, Fitness training coures and English.

Diploma of HospitalityCourse Description
This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent as a manager in any hospitality functional area. This individual would possess a sound theoretical knowledge base and be able to use a range of specialised, technical or managerial competencies to plan, carry out and evaluate their own work and/or the work of their team. Work would be undertaken in various hospitality settings, such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, motels, clubs, pubs, cafes and coffee shops.
Job rolesIndividuals with this qualification are able to perform roles such as:• managing a department in a large hospitality enterprise• managing a small hospitality enterprise.
Possible job titles include:
• restaurant manager • café manager • bar manager
Advanced Diploma of HospitalityCourse Description
This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent as a senior manager in any hospitality functional area. This individual would analyse, design and execute judgements using wide-ranging technical, creative, conceptual or managerial competencies. Their knowledge base may be specialised or broad and they are often accountable for group outcomes. Work would be undertaken in various hospitality settings, such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, motels, clubs, pubs, cafes and coffee shops.
Job rolesIndividuals with this qualification are able to perform roles such as:• senior manager in a large hospitality enterprise• owner or manager of a hospitality enterprise.
Possible job titles include:• food and beverage manager • area manager or operations manager • manager

Certificate III in Hospitality Course Description
This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in skilled operations with the need to apply discretion and judgement. Work would be undertaken in various hospitality settings, such as restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, pubs, cafes and coffee shops. Individuals may have some responsibility for others and provide technical advice and support to a team. Applications may involve some responsibility for others (with respect to supervision of work colleagues or participants). Participation in teams including group or team coordination may be involved.
Job rolesIndividuals with this qualification are able to perform roles such as:
• preparing and serving drinks at a bar
• preparing and serving espresso coffee
• serving food, wine and other beverages at tables

Certificate IV in HospitalityCourse Description
This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in skilled operations and team leading or supervision. Work would be undertaken in various hospitality settings such as restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, pubs, cafes and coffee shops.

Entry Requirements
How to Enrol
Students wanting to enrol in Hospitality courses offered by the Institute must have achieved the minimum of a year 10 education or equivalent. Other options for entry include mature age entry, and special entry where educational standards may not have been met though achievement at secondary schools, but through other avenues.
Student Entry (Age 18 and over)Similar options for students studying are also available as a component of our commitment to Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Schools. Here students can commence, and successfully complete, a Certificate III in Hospitality while still studying their Senior Certificate at High School.

2. Ensure you include a contact home telephone number and your postal address, as this will expedite returning information to you.
3. If you are not sure of the price of the subject or course, we will send you an invoice, or alternatively please call us. Discounts are available for more than one subject. Just ask us about our repayment system.

To EnrolOverseas Students
Overseas Students are welcome to attend the Australian Institute of Applied Sciences. We have world class training facilities that will give students a good grounding for working in clinics throughout Australia and the World.
As well as distance study from the student’s home country via email, online learning and correspondence, students are welcome to attend the Institute in Australia. For overseas students studying in Australia on a student visa, Distance Education is not an available study option.
Student Visas Steps to Enrol
1. Students wishing to study any of the Institute’s courses should contact Administration for assistance in gaining a Student Visa.
2. The Institute will assist you with all of the necessary paperwork to lodge for entry into Australia through the Overseas Student Office of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) at the Australian Embassy in your country.
3. Complete the Student Application form included in your information pack, or available on the enrolment section of our website www.aias.com.au

5. Once all of your forms have been received we will issue an Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (ECoE), that needs to be lodged through the Overseas Student Office of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) at the Australian Embassy in your country. A Student Visa will allow you to study at the Institute in Australia for the length of your chosen course.

Transfer from other Colleges & InstitutesAny student wishing to join courses after gaining credits from another college, should allow sufficient time for verification of academic records, before any recommendations can be made.
Applicants are welcome and a Recognition for Prior Learning form is located within this information pack.
Recognition of Prior LearningThe Institute recognises Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) qualifications and Statements of Attainments issued by any other Registered Training Organisations (RTO) that are applicable to programmes, courses or Statement of Attainments subjects offered by the Institute. Where prospective students have undertaken studies at other non-accredited or higher education institutions both domestically and internationally these qualifications are also assessed against the Institutes courses to enable Recognition of Prior
Learning (RPL) to be processed and appropriately granted.
The Institute provides a RPL application form detailing the required types of information required by applicants wishing to utilise this process.
Affordable Tuition Fees Interest Free RepaymentsTuition fees for any educational course can be daunting. To reduce this anxiety the Institute offers a range of financial options that can be tailored and utilised to make the task as simple and easy as possible, and above all to make it realistically affordable for those wanting to undertake studies.
The Institute offers a range of discounts for prepayment of subjects, semesters and entire courses. Alternatively, we offer payment for individual subjects, or repayment options that can be spread across semesters or years of study. Our friendly, highly skilled and trained administrative staff are available to assist in tailoring a financial plan to suit your individual needs. Please do not hesitate to contact them at any stage for assistance.
Tuition AssistanceAll courses offered by the Institute are recognised for funding under the various Commonwealth Student Assistance options including, but not limited to:

In line with all other aspects of the Institute we also offer students as much flexibility as possible with the payment of tuition fees. Students can receive generous discounts for prepayment of course fees. Payments can be made on a subject by subject basis, or students can utilise a personally tailored repayment plan to pay their fees off over the duration of their chosen study programme. Repayment options can utilise Eftpos, Credit Card, Cheques, Direct Debit or BPay facilities. Whatever your budget we can assist you by designing a payment plan to suit you as a student.

• Deferred examinations may be granted on compassionate grounds (religion, sickness or bereavement).
• Deferred examinations attract an extra fee and must be attended at the rescheduled time.
• Results will be withheld until full payment is made for any monies outstanding.
Appeals or Grievances• Appeals against grades must be made
in writing to Student Services Officer within 14 days of grades being posted (see Policy for details).
• Grievances regarding academic matters are to be made using the procedure detailed in the Student Handbook which is available from the College administration, library and website.
Student Records• Student name and address details
are held in the confidential College database.
• Students must advise the College administration in writing of any changes to their name and address details using the official form.
Language Literacy and NumeracyAll students have the option to be assessed in order to ascertain if their Literacy and Numeracy skills are sufficient to successfully undertake the training programme. This is usually via interview or completion of an exercise contained in the proposed training programme. Those who require further assessment will be out-sourced to a qualified expert. Any costs incurred will be the responsibility of the student.
Refund Policy1. Full Refund of Tuition FeesThe Institute will make a full refund of the tuition fees paid where the Institute withdraws the offer of a place to a student, or the course in which the student has enrolled becomes unavailable. A full refund will be made where an international student has their application for a student visa denied. Proof of such a denied application must accompany the request for a refund.
2. Cancellation of a Course by a Student Prior to Course Commencement
Where a student cancels their enrolment prior to the scheduled course commencement date, tuition fees paid by the student will be refunded; a $150.00 administration fee per subject is not refundable under any circumstances to cover the Institute’s costs incurred in processing the students enrolment and preparing for course delivery.
3. Cancellation of a Course by a Student After Course Commencement
A $1000 administration fee is not refundable under any circumstances for any prepaid course fees. Refunds of not-more-than 25% may be granted if the student wishes to withdraw within one (1) week after the commencement of the students chosen course of study. There will be no refunds made to students of any kind after the completion of the first (1st) week of classes. The Institute does offer a deferment or transfer of the fees paid to another person, less any administrative charges deemed appropriate. In all circumstances the student is required to complete the Amendment to Enrolment form and submit this to Administration.
4. DefermentsWhere a student is unable to continue their studies for reasons deemed to be exceptional circumstances, the student may apply for a deferment. Deferments can be for any designated period of time to ensure the student is able to resume their studies at a time convenient to them. Deferments are not entitled to refund if they occur outside of the guidelines provided in items under section 1, 2 and 3 under any circumstances.
5. Request for RefundsAll requests for refund must be made in writing and forwarded to the Institute Director. Acknowledgement of receipt of the request for a refund will be provided to the address listed on the Students file stored with the Institute. Where refunds are approved payment will be made in the form of a cheque made out in Australian Dollars (AUD) to the enrolled Student. The cheque will be posted to the address held by the Institute for the student, or made available for collection from Administration. All refunds are generally processed within a 30 to 60 day period.
It is the students responsibility to ensure all Institute policies are clearly understood, and, if not, to seek clarification from the Institute’s Administration.

Attendance• A minimum of 80% attendance at
lectures is recommended for the successful completion of a unit of study.
• Students are required to attend lectures each week at the scheduled times according to their Acceptance Notice.
• 100% attendance at clinics or practicals is required.
• Requests to attend an alternative lecture on a one-off basis should be addressed to the College administration.
Assessment• Assessment for all units of study
is compulsory.
• Students are required to complete all assessments in accordance to the assessment outline for each unit of study.
• Where a final examination is indicated students are required to attend according to the published examination timetable.
• Students unable to sit examinations at the scheduled time may apply to Student Services Officer to sit a deferred examination, students are to supply the reasons for deferral that is enclosing relevant evidence (e.g. medical certificate or other documentation) within one week after the scheduled examination date.

QWill I be paid as a qualified waiter, bar attendant if I complete the Certificate in Hospitality?
AYes. Students who successfully complete the Certificate III in Hospitality can apply for positions as in cafe, hotels & bars.
QCan I complete dual awards with the Institute?
AYes. Students enrolled in the Certificate III in Hospitality can add the additional subjects to complete the Certificate IV
or upgrade to the Diploma of Hospitality.
QCan I pay my fees over my course of study by going on a repayment plan?
AYes. The Institute offers a range of repayment options for students. Including weekly, fortnightly, and monthly
repayment options. These include the ability to pay by credit card, direct debit, BPay, cheque, or EFTPOS. Contact Administration so that we can tailor a plan to suit your needs and budget.
QAm I able to receive exemptions and recognition for prior learning from study in this course?
AYes! Providing you have undertaken, and successfully completed studies at another recognised college, i.e.
University, TAFE College etc containing similar subjects to those in the Institute’s course of your choice. You should then complete the attached Exemption/RPL application form and forward it, with the required additional information to the Institute.
QWhat happens if my anticipated time frame changes?
ANothing. With distance education you have far greater flexibility with your time. Indeed, if you find you have less,
or even more, time available than when you started your studies you are able to tailor your time frame to suit your circumstances and still complete your studies.
QWhat happens when I complete my studies?
AThroughout the course and after completion the Institute’s extensive network is available to help you with advice
on most aspects of the industry. You are not left to ‘fend’ for yourself. The Institute believes that we are all on a pathway of Life Long Learning.
QWhat happens if I fail an exam or assignment?
AIf you do fail you are able to redo the examination or re-submit your assignment and it will be reassessed and
remarked. This process will continue until you successfully complete the assessment for the subject.
QWhat happens if I am unable to complete the course?
AYou will be issued with a statement that represents the portion of study you have undertaken. If you find your
circumstances do allow you to resume studies in the future you will not incur any additional costs for reinstatement.
QCan I save time and costs by studying externally?
ASimply put YES! This is possible as you do not have the rigid structure of a classroom situation, therefore you have the
flexibility to work at your own pace to complete the course. The more time you have available to study the quicker you will complete the course. In addition you lose the costs and time wasted incurred travelling to College.
QCan I change to internal study if I choose?
AYes! The Institute provides both Face-to-Face and Distance Education. Our students have the facility available to
undertake a combination of both styles of delivery.
QWhen can I commence the course?
AThe uniqueness of Distance Education is that students can commence studies at any point in time suitable to them.
You DO NOT have to wait for the beginning of a semester or term.
QCan I study from overseas?
AYes. Subjects and courses are available for students living overseas. E-mail facilities are available for students for
easy contact to the school’s administration.
QAre there any additional extra costs?
AIn short ‘NO!’ The fees you pay for subjects include all information, e.g. notes, textbooks, video tapes and audio
tapes (where applicable) required for successful completion as well as marking costs incurred by the Institute. The Fees, however, DO NOT include postage costs relating to assignments to the Institute, nor seminars and workshops.
