Abstract

Textbooks are one of the core constituents of the curriculum. The importance of textbooks in every program is related to the coordinating role that they create among other parts of the curriculum. Most of the times, the textbook determines the methodology, as most of the instructors choose their methodology based on the textbook. There are different views with regard to the selection of textbook quality framework for the instruction of Arabic grammar in the curriculum but the common belief states the necessity of textbook design based on the modern content organization.

Content analysis is one of the modern methods for evaluating the content of textbooks in the curriculum. In this method, strong points and weak points of the textbooks are evaluated based on the modern scientific and educational methods.

This study tries to analyze the weak points and strong points of Arabic grammar textbooks at university level based on the descriptive-analytic approach with content analysis methodology. From among available textbooks, two books, mabadi alarabiyaah and aljadidi fi alsarf wa alnahv that are used more than any other book at the university level were selected and based on content analysis framework they were analyzed. The results show that the major methodology of these books in teaching grammar is based on traditional – deductive approach. Of the most prominent weak points of these books are “not having any educational goals for instructors and students” and “inadequate exercises and text for internalization of the rules”.
