Consent and Policy Information
Please be aware that a package of information will
be coming home soon containing a general student
consent form, school policies and procedures.
Please take your time to familiarise yourself with
these and keep them at home for your reference.
The only form we need completed and returned is
the general consent form. Please read through and
indicate by yes/ no answers that you understand
and/ or consent to the items listed. By sending home
this condensed form, means that we will not have to
continuously send parent consent forms throughout
the year – unless they are different to what is stated.
Each staff member will have a quick reference copy
of each classes’ consent to be able to refer to when
necessary. Please fill in and return at your earliest
convenience.
Hats
Now that we are in the swing of week 3, all students
should have their school, wide brim hat. Please
remember that we are a Sun Smart school and that
hats are to be worn all year around.
Special Events
This year is Production year which ties nicely into the
drama, dance and music curriculum. As a result of
this, we will be replacing Class Assemblies with
Gallery Walks. Gallery Walks are a way for students
to display their work which gives a chance for

parents, friends, teachers and other students to give
feedback. Even though families love class assemblies
as a way to present student learning, it is difficult for
students to practise both for their assembly and the
production at the same time! Class assemblies will
return next year.
Fire Drills
We are in the process of practising all of our drills – the
evacuation to the oval, the lockdown in classrooms and
the bushfire evacuation to the Compton Hall. These
drills allow us to update any processes or procedures
that need tweaking. It also helps your child/ren know
what to expect in each situation and what their roles and
responsibilities are in an emergency.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN occurs every year for the students in year 3, 5
and 7 in term 2. We have a practice test scheduled on
Monday the 23/3, set out by the NAPLAN team. They
have asked that we distribute the NAPLAN Online
Privacy Collection Notice before the practice test.
Please see the attachment.
Relay For Life
Just a gentle reminder that the Relay For Life committee
sent out a letter last week asking for some help with
some jobs and for as much participation from families
on the day as possible. We are walking this year in
memory of our wonderful SSO and friend, Kristyn Dawe.
Please let Miss Hamilton or the office know whether you
are able to help with the tent/s or banner. Also – please
register and join us! It is a really fantastic cause. (See
link in attached letter if required.)

SunSmart Policy
Compton PS have been proud members of the Cancer Council’s SunSmart School Program since 2017. In 2020 we continue to follow the policy throughout the whole year. Due to first aid requirements we are no longer allowed to apply sunscreen to your children, however we ask that families and staff please supply their own sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen). Posters are placed around the classrooms to remind students to apply sunscreen. All students and staff are required to continue wearing hats all year round whenever the UV index levels reach 3 and above. Please find attached to this newsletter an updated copy of our SunSmart Policy.

Around the Classrooms
We have had a busy start to the year with two weeks of
Quality Start! We spent this time setting up subjects,
expectations, building relationships and taking a look at
what is to come over the year.
Last week we held debating auditions for this year and we
are very pleased to congratulate the following students -
Will, Tate, Ashiah, Malcolm, Olivia, Grace, Alysha,
Serenity and Kyra. These students will begin preparing
for their debates with Mrs Roulstone next term before the
big debate in Term 3. Well done to everyone who
auditioned! Mrs Kramins and the 6/7 Class
The Middle Primary Classroom have set ourselves up for
a successful 2020.
We are all ready to ‘Dream Big- Work Hard- Stay Kind’
Through our Quality Start program we have created a
set of classroom values that we expect our classmates to
adhere to.
Our values are:
This week in writing our class has begun our descriptive
writing unit. Students are working towards the learning
intentions of using descriptive language to create
imaginative texts and create meaningful sentences using a
variety of sentence beginnings. Students have been
transforming telling sentences into showing sentences.
Below are some examples of student’s sentences:
He was sad.
As he cuddled his knees, salty tears dropped from his eyes.
-Ava Hosking
She was excited.
Her deep blue eyes twinkled like a star and her was widened with
joy. You could see her glimmering white teeth whilst she was
smiling. Five seconds later you could hear her squeal with joy and
happiness.
-Kelleysha Lay
He was sad.
He fell to his knees into more darkness, then he curled up in a ball
alone in an ally as drops of tears fell down his face.
-Koby Parker.
Miss Hamilton and the 4/5 Class
&
The Quality Start program has seen all the children
enthusiastic to set up the routines and expectations for
our classes.
We talked about the ‘Power of Yet’, and how it can alter
our mindset when working on different tasks. The 2/3’s
buddied up with a R/1 students to show their learning in
writing and to read their recounts. The 2/3’s showed the
R/1’s how their writing is still developing and when they
started they couldn’t write and
read YET!
Throughout the year the two
Junior Primary classes will be
working together to develop
skills in dance and design and
technology, and fostering a
positive relationship with both
classes.

We are continuing to work on our Quality Start program
focussing on the school and class values, the school and
class grievance procedures, class routines and
expectations. We will continue to do this over the year.
In Maths, we have been focussing on comparing and
ordering capacity. We have been talking about which holds
more and less and then ordering containers of different
capacities. It has been really exciting to see most students
working well with capacity.
In Number, the Receptions are working on recognising
numbers to 20 and the skill of subitising. Year 1 students
have been working on improving their subtraction skills and
developing quicker recall of subtraction facts.
In Health, we have introduced the feelings words of
friendly, kind and proud through Lovey Dove the Kimochi
character. We have been sharing ideas of when we have
felt proud, showed kindness or friendliness to others.
In Design and Technology we made a kindness rainbow
either in groups or individually, our choice, as well as
worked in groups to create a house.
Any parents/grandparents/friends etc who are able to
come and listen to reading please let me know what days
suit you and I will make up a roster. It can be at any time of
the day that suits you for as long as you would like to stay. Miss H and the R/1 Class
