MissionStatement: RoseHavenisadayshelterandcommunitycenterforwomen,childrenandgendernon-conformingfolksexperiencinghomelessness,abuseandotherlifedisruptions.Ourmissionistomaintainasafeandrespectfulcommunity,whileprovidingourguestswithsupportandservicestoassisttheminregainingstabilityintheirlives.OrganizationalBackground:RoseHaven'slow-barriermodelmakesusthefirstpointofcontactformanywhoareseekingsocialservices,andweoffersanctuarywhereindividualsandfamiliesincrisiscancometoseeksuppliesandsupporttoregainindependence.Wehavebeenatrustedresourceforthisuniquepopulationformorethan20years,originatingasaprogramofCatholicCharitiesin1997,andreincorporatingandmovingtoourpresentlocationinNWPortlandin2007.Programs:AtRoseHavenwebreakthecycleofhomelessnessbyprovidingnutritiousmeals,clothing,firstaid,mailingaddresses,hygiene,restrooms,showersaswellaseducationalprogramsandguidancethroughmedicalandsocialservices.Ourstaffadvocateshelpeachuniqueguestnavigateheroptionsandrebuildherlife.Bymeetingbasicneedsandbuildingtrust,weempowerpeopletoexplorelong-termchange.SnapshotofRoseHaven'sservicesfrom2017(2018statsavailableafter1/24/19):

WhoWeServe:PeoplecometoRoseHavenfromalloverthemetroareawithdifferentstruggles;howevertheunifyingfactorinourcommunityispoverty.Whilemanyofourguestsarelivingoutside,inemergencysheltersandintransitionalhousing,wealsohavealargepopulationwhoareabletocontinuelivinginstablehousingbecausetheyrelyonusforsupplies,servicesandsupport.Mentalillness,physicalillnessandaddictionafflicthomelesswomenandchildrenatarateof50%morethanforthegeneralpopulation.RoseHavenplaysanimportantrolebyprovidingsafetyandemergencyservicesduringthedaytimewhennight-sheltersareclosedandfamilieshavenoplacetogo.Onaverage,100guestsaccessourservicesdaily,and3,500annually.Fiftypercent(50%)ofwomenservedatRoseHavenareminorities,and18%ofguestssurveyedidentifyasLGBTQ+.In2018weserved75%women/gendervariantadultsand25%children.

RebekahAlbert,RoseHaven'sExecutiveDirector,wasrecentlyrecognizedbyTheCityofPortlandforhercommitmenttoEquity,InclusionandDiversity;winninga2017SpiritofPortlandAwardforherworkinthisarea.OurChallenge:ThelatestPointinTimeCountsurveyresultsshowstherateofhomelesswomeninMultnomahCountyhasincreased16%since2015,andtherateofwomenaccessingemergencysheltershasdoubled.Itindicatesthatoneofthefastest-growingdemographicsofhomelesspeopleinMultnomahCountyisthosewithphysicalormentaldisabilities,jumping16%since2015andnowmakingup72%ofthehomelesspopulation.ThenumberofhomelessstudentsinOregonincreased5.6%in2017.Familieswithchildrenmakeup15.7%ofthosewhowereexperiencinghomelessnessinOregon.

ROSE HAVEN

ThisisnosurprisetoRoseHaven.Lastyearweserved20%morechildrenthaneverbefore.Weexperienceda6%increaseoverpreviousyearservicenumbers,anda62%increaseinwomenandchildrenservedoverthepast5years.Asthecityexperiencesasteadyincreaseinhomelessness,wehavealsoseenarapiddeclineinavailableshelterspaceforwomenandchildren.In2018,8localsheltersclosedinthePortlandMetroareaduetoseasonalorfacilitychallenges,includingclosureofthelargestfamilyshelterinOregon.Recentdevelopmentshavetakenanalreadystrainedsocialservicessystemintoextremecircumstances.ThewomenandchildrenweservehavebeenevenmoredependentonRoseHavenasareliableresourceformeals,suppliesandsafety;andweanticipatethesenumberstocontinuallyclimboverthenextyear.AmountofRequest:$10,000DescriptionofRequest/Outcomes:Wearerequestingoperatingsupportduringatimeofgreatneedandrapidgrowth.RoseHavenreceivesnogovernmentfundingandreliessolelyonthesupportofindividuals,corporations,organizationsandfoundationstofundouroperations.Thishasprovenprogressivelymorechallengingasdemandforservicesescalatesannually.RoseHaven'sgoalistoprovideasanctuaryandresourcecenterforthosemostmarginalizedinourcommunity;women,childrenandgendervariantfolksexperiencingthetraumaofhomelessnessandintersectingissuessuchasabuse,andpoorphysicalandmentalhealth.Operatingwithasmallstaffof10andmorethan600activevolunteers,ourgoalin2019istoempowermorethan3700women,childrenandgendervariantfolkstopursueasaferandmorefulfillinglife.WeaskforyourhelpinmeetingthisgrowingdemandforRoseHaven’sservices.
