TheveryfirstcollageIremembermakingwasaransomnotetomyparents.Thenoteread:“Wehaveyourchildren—send£2,500,000.”MysisterandIneverdidreceivethatmoney.Wehidinthebackgardenforafewhoursuntilwegotboredandhungry,thenreturnedtothehouseactingasthoughnothinghadhappened.Thishasstuckinmymemory,notjustbecauseoftheunimaginablethingstheten-year-oldmeplannedtodowithmyshareofmoney,butalsobecausetheprocessofleafingthroughstacksofmagazinesandnewspaperstryingtofindthecorrectletterstomakethenotegotmehooked.

Ihavealwaysbeendrawntoprocess-heavyartmaking,spendinghoursindarkroomsprintingphotographs,preppingsilkscreensandplatesforprintingorworkingonsheetaftersheetofagreatbigpileofpaperstolatercaptureandmakeananimationthatlastsforonlytwenty-fiveseconds.Theobsessive-compulsivesideofme—thesidethatlikesorderandorganization—grabbedontothemediumofcollageandranforthehills.Idiscoveredthattheconstantsearchingforandcollectingofnewmaterialstouse,andthenumeroushoursspenttryingtosortandarrangecutimages,hadmynamewrittenalloverit.

Overthelastfewyearsitseemsthata“collageboom”hasbeentakingplace,ariseinpopularitythathaslednotjusttoanincreaseinpeoplemakingcollagebuttoaninfluxofexhibitions,books,andblogsshowcasingthediversityofthemedium.Collageisearningawelloverduelevelofrespectasalegitimateartform,insteadofbeingthoughtofasjustsomethingforchildrentodabblewithintheirearlyschoolyears.Thebasicideaofanartistneedingtodraw,paint,orsculptisthrownoutthewindow,andthescissors,scalpel,andgluearewelcomedwithopenarms.

Ifeelveryluckytobeapartofthisexpansionincollage’spopularity.Ithasgivenmetheopportunitytotakepartinexhibitionsthroughouttheworld—showingmyworkinsmallcitieslikeNorwichintheUnitedKingdom,tomoreexoticmetropolisessuchasQuito,thecapitalofEcuador.Ithasalsohelpedmetoachievecommercialsuccessasacollageillustrator.Icouldnotbehappiermakingcollagesforaliving.ItenablesmetodotheworkIloveeverydayoftheweek.Beforethecurrentrenaissance,myowncollageprocesswasslightlyfrowneduponbymytutorsandpeersduringmyartschoolyears.OnlyaftergraduatingdidIdiscoverthetight-knitfamilyofothercollageartiststhatwasflourishingonline.Theseartistsprovidedinspirationandencouragementandwerealwayswillingtosharetheirprocesstips,methods,andwork.Thereissomethingaboutcollagethatbreedscollaboration.Indeed,itseemstobetheperfectmediumforcollaborativeprojects.Workingtogetherwithothercollagepractitionersopenstheartist’seyestothedifferentprocessesandmethodsemployedbyothersandteachestheindividualabouthisorherownwork,andhowitisreadandperceivedbyothers.

Wecurrentlyliveinaverydigitalsociety,spendingmostofourdayattachedtoacomputer,tablet,orsmartphone,navigatingthroughvirtualpageswithaclickofabuttonortheswipeofafinger.Thismaybeonereasonfortherecentsurgeinpopularityofcollageandotherformsofcraft.Itmaybethatpeoplefeeltheneedtomakethingsbyhandagain,tophysicallytouchandcreatesomethingoutsideoftheirday-to-daydigitallives.Mass-producedgoodscanbeperceivedassomewhatheartlessandordinary,whereasthesatisfactionofcreatingsomethingwithone’sownhandsispriceless.Thereismoreroomforerrorandthissooftenleadstounexpected,butfrequentlybeautiful,mistakes.Thesemistakescanandshouldbeembraced,becausetheyoftengiverisetonewideasandthereforeencourageprogressioninthework.

Ilovecollagebecauseitissuchatactileprocess.IfeelaconnectiontothematerialsthatI’musingthroughhandlingandmanipulating,andenjoymakingthemmyown.Therestrictionsofworkingwithcollagematerialsis,

forme,awelcomechallenge—theremovalofathingfromitsoriginalcontext,givingitanewlifeandmeaning.However,thematerialstillbyitsverynaturecarriessomeofitspastwithit,addingextradepthtoapiece.Ienjoyusingvintageimagesbecauseoftheirunpolishedandgrainyquality,aswellastheirtextureandcolorsaturation.Ilettheimagesguidemycreativeprocess.

Istartbylookingthroughmagazinesandbooks,soakingintheircontentandmood.Certainimagesordetailswillcatchmyattentionandwillsparkmythoughtprocess,leadingmetostartthinkingabouthowImightusetheimagetocreateacomposition,idea,ornarrative.IthinkthereisanelementofmysubconscioustakingcontrolwhileIwork—onlyafterwardwillthesubtledetailsandmeaningswithintheworkrevealthemselves.Generallytheactualmakingofacollageisaquickprocess—thegroundworkofsearchingandcollectingmaterialshavingalreadybeenputinplace.Ithriveontheadventureofthesearchfornewpapergoodstouse,religiouslyvisitingsecondhandshopsandfleamarketsaswellasconstantlycheckingforinterestingscrapsonthestreetsorinrubbishbins.Thereisthesenseofregenerationandupcyclingthatattractsmetopeople’sdiscardedpaper

regenerationandupcyclingthatattractsmetopeople’sdiscardedpapergoods,IliketothinkthatI’mgivingitasecondchancetoshineinsteadofjustbecomingmorelandfill.

Collageischeapandaccessibletoeverybody.Youdon’tneedanyfancyequipmentoraworkshopfulloftools—everyhouseholdhasapairofscissorsandsomeglueoradhesivetape.Allyouneedissomeinspirationandoffyougo—cutting,tearing,andsticking.Theartfeaturedinthisbookisnothingshortofinspirational.Itshowsthevariousstylesanddifferentapproachestocollage,withartistsusingnotonlypaperbutalsotextiles,paint,printmaking,andsculpturalelementstocreatepiecesthatarebothbeautifulandthought-provoking.

Everyday,onmyartsite,theJealousCurator,Iwriteaboutcontemporaryartistswhomakeme“jealous.”Jealousinaninspirationalway—withmaybejustasmallpunchtothecreativegut.I’manartistmyself,andwhenIfindworkthatmakesmethink,“OhIwishIthoughtofthat,”IknowthatI’vegottomorrow’spost.Iwouldguessthatatleasthalfofthesepostsareaboutmixed-mediaandcollageartists.Foundimagesyouneverwouldhavedreamedofseeingpaired,arenowforevergluedasone.Alonelyblack-and-whitephotographisgivennewlifewhenstitchedoverwithrainbow-huedembroiderythread.Bookcoversbecomecanvasesandsausagesbecomeguns.Anythingispossiblewithapairofscissorsandabitofglue.Imakecollagesofmyown,andIwriteaboutotherartists’collagesallthetime.Andthatobsessionisthegermofthisbook.

Usingfoundimageryisdefinitelynotanewidea.OneofthemostfamouspiecesfromthePopArtera,forexample,isRichardHamilton’scollageJustwhatisitthatmakestoday’shomessodifferent,soappealing?,1956.ItiswidelyacknowledgedasoneoftheearliestpiecesofPopArt,literallybringingpopculturefromthepagesofmagazinestothegallerywall.And,ifyougobackalittlefurtherinarthistory,evenPicassousedfoundimagery,duringhiscubistperiod.Theseartistsgaveexistingimagesanentirelynewpurpose,andcreatedsomethingfreshfromimagesandideasthatwerealreadyveryestablishedintheirmeaning.Familyphotos,crumpledpostcards,scribbled-onbookpages—eachoftheseforgottenitems,inthehandsoftwentieth-centurycollageartists,hadthepotentialtobecomeamasterpiece.

Infact,it’sthetreasurehunt—thefindingandsortingandselectingofimages—thatisformanythemostrewardingpartoftheprocess.Nothingmakesacollagisthappierthandiggingthroughaboxofimagesorastackofbooksuntilweuncoverthatperfectimage—thekindofimagethatstopstheheart,

justforasecond,becauseoftheamazingcreativepotentialitholds.Thattransformationisoneofthebestthingsaboutcollage:Theartistgetstofinishtelling,inacompletelynewway,astorythatwasstartedbysomeoneelse.Combininganoldimagewithsomethingmodern.Addingaboldtextureorcolortoaseeminglyplainphotograph.Suddenlythere’sanentirelynewnarrativethatwouldn’thaveexistedotherwise.Trulygreatcollageartiststakecuesfromwhatexistsinthebitsandpiecesinfrontofthem—thenturnallofitupsidedown,addjusttherightunexpectedelement,andclaimitastheirown.Foranyonewhohaseverlookedatablankpageandfounditjusttoodarnperfectandintimidating—collageisablessing.Startingwithsomethingandbuildingonitisachancetoremakestories,tocreateartoutofsomethingratherthannothing,toembracewhimsyandhumorandpastiche.

EverytimeIfinda“perfectimage,”IinstantlyenvisionwhatImightdotoit.WhatwillIkeep,whatwillItakeaway,whatshouldIadd?Inthatsamemoment,IwonderwhatsomeofthecollageartistsIadmiremostwoulddowithit.WhatwouldJesseDraxlerkeep?WhatmightBethHoeckelthrowaway?WhatwouldAnthonyZinonosaddtothisphotograph?Well,insteadofwondering,Iaskedthem.Orchallengedthem,youmightevensay.Ingatheringtogetherthethirtyartistsfromaroundtheworldtobeinthisbook,Ididn’tjustaskthemtosharetheirexistingwork.Igaveeachoftheseamazingcontemporarymixed-mediacollageartiststheexactsameimage:avintage,familyphotoofacowboyandhismustache-clad,accordion-playingbrother,circa1958(seepage13).Theyalltookthisblack-and-whitevintagegembacktotheirstudios,andthenproceededtochopandglueandpaintandsew.Theyemergedwiththirtyentirelyuniquemasterpieces.

Theartistswhoarepartofthisprojectallhavetheirownuniqueapproachtocollage,whichisveryevidentintheirselectedfeaturedworks.Butwouldtheirpiecesfeelasdifferentwhentheyallstartedwiththesameimage?Iwasunsure,butexcited,aboutwhatmightcomeback.Aseachcollagearrived,itwasthrillingtoseehowdifferenteachpiecewas.Someoftheworkfeaturesthechallengeimageprominently,andinotherpiecesyoureallyhavetolookforit.Youwillfindalloftheseamazingnewcollagesinthisbook,plusonemore—becauseIcouldn’tresist—Ihadtomakeonetoo(seepage12).

Ichosethesethirtyartistsbecauseallofthemareincrediblyaccomplishedintheworldofcollage.Theyhavespentyearsdevelopingtheirownstyles—

someusingsimplescissorsandglue,othersusingdigitaltechniques,andafewwhohavechosentoworkwithaneedleandthread.Workbytheseartistsissoughtafterbycollectors,galleries,andpublications,whichhasledtoexposureandexhibitionsfromonesideoftheglobetotheother.Collectively,theyrepresentwhatishappeningincontemporarycollage.

IhopeyouenjoyallofthisartworkasmuchasIenjoyedgatheringit.Thisbook,Collage,isinfactacollageinitsownright:pagesandpagesoffoundimages,slicesfrommagazines,vintagepaper,andcolorfulthread.Itisacollectionofbeautifulbitsandpiecesthat,together,telltheirownstory.Andwhatisthatstory?Thestoryofcollage.

THEARTISTS

LARISSAHAILYAGUADOIstartedtheprojectLifeIsaCollagein2008,mainlyoutofaneedforexpressionandpersonalcommunication.WithcollageIfoundamethodinwhichIfeltfreetopresentmyfindings,despitethephysicallimitationsofthistechnique.

Paper,scalpel,andgluearemymaterials,andmytools.Iseek,select,andclassifyimagesthatIfindinterestingorattractive.Ithencombinethem,transformingthemintoanewreality.Thetraditionalhandmadecollagehasitsownidentityandethics,totallyopposedtotheinfinitepossibilitiesofdigital,butthisiswherethetruevalueis—thechallengeoffindingopportunitiesandachievingfunctionalitywithintheconstraints.Icombinenature,people,andobjectsonlyinordertotransmitmorecomplexemotions,thoughts,andfeelings.

Todaythisremainsmymosteffectivewaytorepresentmyvisualthinking.

MARÍAAPARICIOPUENTESThesubjectofthreadhasbeenwithmesincecollege.Iremember,Ionceconnectedthetreesinaparktoshowthespacebetweenthem.Inaworkshopexercise,Imeasuredthefacadesofsomebuildingsandthenunrolleddifferentdimensionsofthreadsovermetodemonstratephysicallytherelationshipbetweenthebodyandthescaleofarchitecture.

WhenIintervenewiththreadsonanimage,Iworkonanotherlevel—Iamtryingtodemonstratethespecialrelationshipsthataregeneratedinamoment(inaframe,inthiscase).

Iliketointerveneonblack-and-whiteimages.Ithinkthatit’samore“neutral”basewhereIcanwork,andwheretherelationsIseektoemphasizecanbehighlightedinabetterway.Also,IfeelIamnotworkingwiththeoriginalandwiththat,theneedtokeepitsreality.Ithinkthattheessenceofanimagecanbemoreinterestingthroughtheoverlappingofinformation,whichinthiscasecanbethevisualizationofaninvisiblegeometry.

MARKBRADLEY-SHOUPThemajorityofmyworkarisesfrommyobservationandinteractionwiththenaturalandconstructedlandscapeandhowwerespondtooursenseofplaceintheworld,asIamintriguedbyhowweinhabitandutilizespace.Thisworkisoftenderivedfrommyownphotographsandfrommappingsystemsandarchitecturalschematics.Givenmyresponsetoconsumerrelationshipsandwaste,athirdseriesofworkusesdiscardeditemsthatculminateintheformofcollagesandmixedmedia.Theimagesinthisbodyofworkareaformofaestheticplayandmediaexperimentation.

Whilemostofmyworkhasdistinctconceptualunderpinnings,thisseriespresentsamoresincerediscoursewiththeconceptofplaywithintheconfinesofstudiopractice,whereIallowtheimagesandcompositionstopresentthemselvesthroughoutthecourseofexperimentation.Whiletheseimagesdonotdirectlyaddresstheconceptsembeddedinmyotherwork,theyarelinkedandcontinuetoinfluenceoneanother.Mycollageandmixed-mediaworkisthetruestformofstudioresearch,asmanyofthetechniquesandcompositionsfleshedoutwithintheseworksalsofindthemselvesresidinginmymoretraditionalpaintingpractice.

LISACONGDONMypathintotheworldofartandillustrationhasnotbeenastandardone.Ididnotbeginpainting,drawing,ormakingcollagesuntilIwasthirtyyearsold,andIamalmostentirelyself-taught.Myintenseobsessionswithpattern,color,andfarawaycultureshavedrivenmyvastcatalogofwork.

Muchofmywork(madeprimarilyfromgraphite,gouache,ink,andpaper)isnarrative,thoughnoneofitisintendedtoberealisticsnapshotsofanyparticulartimeorplace.WhileIdrawfromactualhistoriesandcultures,Iworkhardtotransformtheminunexpectedways.Myintentionistodrawviewersinsothattheycaninventtheirownnarrativesaboutmywork.Paperpatchwork,patterns,andatextilepresenceinmyworkreferencemylongtimeromancewithsurfacedesign,inparticularthedesignandfolkpatternsofScandinaviaandothercultures.Myworkalsocombinesobviousjuxtapositions:combiningboldneoncolorswithvintagesepia-tonedphotographsandtraditionalgraphitedrawingswithcollagedgeometricshapes.

Asmyworkevolvesovertime,therearesomethemesorimagesthatreappear,forexample:trees,women’slegs,hair,highheels,dresses,sea,mountains.
