CLUB PRESIDENTS REPORT - Bill Harrigan Hello members;
Just a few lines from Perth where Joy and I are enjoying a visit to our son Gregory and his family
for a week or so. Gregory is a Chief Superintendent in the AFP and currently the Commander and
OIC of WA and NT AFP Regions.
While we are here we are visiting the Margaret River District to taste the wine and then off to the
Rottnest Island to resume where Joy and I and the family left off during our 1976 visit. Also I will
be going to Fremantle to check out the Maritime Museum. We are returning on the Indian Pacific in time for the
dinner and the Remembrance Day Service.
On Friday 9th November we are holding our combined Club Annual Dinner, 85th Sub-Branch Anniversary and
the 100th Anniversary Remembrance Day Dinner. We ask all members to support this important dinner as it could be
the last in our old Club and also we celebrate the 85th Anniversary of our great sub-Branch as it is today.
On Wednesday the 24th October we attended the funeral of Elvie Johnson who passed away on the 15th
October at the age of 96. Elvie, wife of the late former sub-Branch President Bill Johnson, and sister of Ted Wilson,
served for over 40 years on our Women’s Auxiliary and strongly supported Bill in his role of President and sub-Branch
and Club member. Bill was one of the last WW2 sub-Branch members to hold office and he along with his
Committee did much to progress this great sub-Branch and Club we have today. Bill also served on the Club Board
for many years holding Executive office. The direct family of Elvie and Bill, namely Bill, Bob and Barbara continue to
support the Club. Bob and his family attend each ANZAC Day service travelling from the Central Coast to join us in
our March and Service. The passing of Elvie and Reg Johnson is the last of the great Johnson family who served our
sub-Branch and Club with distinction for many years.
Last year and this year we supported the INVICTUS Games with $55,000 in direct donations. We also
sponsored competitor Peter Rudland who competed in the wheelchair events and the wheelchair rugby, by
subsidising his wheelchair. I attended the wheelchair and cycling events held at the Botanical Gardens on Sunday
20th October and saw Peter compete in the time trial finishing fourth to the hot USA three and then took them on
almost single handed in the individual race again finishing in fourth place. He held third place behind two of the USA
team until the last lap when he was overtaken by the third American. This was a race of attrition, over 30 minutes
down and up a steep hill, with an addition lap when the 30 minutes was reached. On Wednesday, Joy and I along
with other members, attended the evening wheel chair rugby qualifying events, seeing our team defeat the
undefeated UK hot side in two periods of extra time 16-15. We also saw them defeat a composite side named
Unconquered comfortably. Peter again performed well in this team event. He asked me to personally thank our
members for sponsoring him and the Games. That’s all from the West.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT - Rob McPake Greetings members; welcome to the warmth……HEATWAVE!! I hope you are all full of zest for
the festive season so we can flavour your appetites with some spicy activities and promotions.
Before alluding to these, I have a special announcement to make, as one of my management
colleagues has risen to immense heights in the educational hall of hospitality fame.
Congratulations to our Club Duty Manager, Graeme Tonks, as one of the recipients of the 2019
CMAA Bursary Award Silver Chef tour of Melbourne. Well done and well deserved Graeme! I am looking
forward to accompanying you for investiture of the award to be presented on Friday, 30th November 2018 at
Canterbury Leagues Club. Victory for Tasmania; Gold to the Vandemonians!! I trust, of course, there will now
be no more talk of retirement because, while we can gladly do without shades of grey in the skies; we
certainly cannot do without shades of Graeme in Gray Street! Well, as they say: if you’re going to roast them,
you must first wrap them well! GLORIA!!! COMPLIMENTO!!! SALUTE!!! SLANGEVAR!!!
The Spring Racing Carnival reaches a climax next Tuesday, 6th November 2018 with the RACE THAT
STOPS A NATION: Race number 7 at Flemington - The 158th MELBOURNE CUP. Our Annual Melbourne Cup
Luncheon, held in the ground floor lounge, is value at just $30 for members and $38 for visitors. We still have
tickets on sale from reception which will, I imagine, sell fast. So, first in, best dressed; don’t miss out on all the
glamor and glitz of this prime racing event. Your $30 ticket entitles you to a two (2) course meal (choice of
main and dessert); a complimentary arrival glass of bubbly, beer or juice; a free $1 mystery trifecta ticket;
the opportunity to win prizes in an array of promotions: lucky door; best dressed; Cup trivia; best hat; my lit-
tle pony? etc; the privilege of sitting in a relaxed setting while viewing all the coverage on our excellent
screens; and the attentive service of your Club’s friendly staff. Entertainment will continue into the evening
with our very popular music duo, BACK 2 FRONT, playing from 5:00pm to 8:30pm.
Owing to the celebration of Melbourne Cup Day at your Club, Tuesday Bingo and the evening Fame
Trivia promotion have been cancelled. This will no doubt disappoint many of our members, particularly our
bingo ladies. To make amends for this, as previously announced, Mel will be hosting a bingo session on
Thursday, 8th November 2018 from 12:00pm to 3:00pm. See, we do care about our bingo babes, so please
make sure to be there for this fast, sharp session with an increased prize pool. For our trivia enthusiasts, Fame
Trivia will return on Tuesday, 13th November 2018 from 7:30pm to 10:00pm. Hostess, Lola, who recently lost
her grandfather, will return to the podium. The promotion has progressed moderately well and we rely on
your continued support to retain the game. So, please keep turning up, bring some friends; it’s free and there
are a healthy swag of prizes to be won. The Ceroc and Modern Jive classes in the Club’s auditorium on
Tuesday nights from 7:00pm to 10:00pm are also proving successful with consistent attendance levels of sixty
to seventy learners. Don’t be shy, come and see Julie to sign up for a practice session.
A most important call: Friday, 9th November 2018 is the 85th Anniversary Annual and Remembrance Day Dinner of Club Bondi Junction Waverley RSL Sub Branch Club. Tickets are value at $40 which includes a three (3) course meal (large prawn and oyster entrée; choice of main and dessert); complimentary beer, wine and soft drinks for the duration of the evening; and musical entertainment from the Sam Pellegrino Duo. This year represents the centenary celebration of the Great War armistice and it is of prime importance we show respect and recognition. To date, ticket sales have been poor and we only have until next Tuesday, 6th November 2018 to finalise the numbers for catering purposes. Could all our sporting bodies: Swimming, Snooker, Darts, Indoor Bowls and Lawn Bowls, please show some support here. The Club which supports your sporting interests with conviction and pride, requires some reciprocal support to maintain its pride and spirit. Please, heed the call! See reception staff for assistance and/or contact myself. In closing, may I offer my heart- felt condolences to the families of Club members who have recently passed: Elvie Johnson, Wilma Wilson and Neil Hill. All were gentle spirits; held in high esteem and regarded with respect.
SEE YOU RACING AROUND THE CLUB WE LOVE: CLUB BONDI JUNCTION!!!!

Sister to Ted Wilson, Sub Branch Club member and wife to Bill Johnson (Deceased), former Sub Branch President. Elvie joined Bondi Junction Waverley Auxiliary in 1962. A dedicated worker who shunned taking executive positions but was a natural leader and soon took charge with the organisation of fund-raisers and catering for the clubs numerous activities. She donated gifts for auxiliary raffles, sold Anzac emblems and poppies for the RSL charities and helped with the Mental Diggers Days.
