Y O U T H P I Z Z A - M A K I N G
For a few summers in my youth, I
attended Pine Lake Camp. When-
ever a camp counselor or program
director got up and said, "I have a
few announcements to make..."
everyone would start singing the
announcement song:
"Announcements, announce-
ments, annoouuuncements..." It
was a loud, but light-hearted way
to communicate the campers'
displeasure at having to sit
through a laundry list of
announcements.
Of course, whatever was shared
was always vital information: who
was on KP duty after the meal,
what the afternoon activities would
be, and more.
Recently, the Congregation
Council and Ministry Teams have
been having a discussion about
the announcements at the start of
Sunday worship. We have done
so in response to concerns from
congregation members the
announcements are running too
long: we've heard you singing the
"announcements song," so to
speak, and are working to
respond.
It is a tricky topic, to be sure. On
the one hand, that period at the
start of our worship is actually a
part of our worship. We are
hearing about the opportunities
available to us to grow in our faith,
and to live out our faith. Lots of
announcements means a vital and
active church, and that’s a good
thing! It means we are responding
Page 2
to God's call to love God and our
neighbor, in many and varied
ways.
On the other hand, much of what
is shared in the announcements
can also be found in the bulletin,
newsletter, on the kiosk, in the
weekly e-mails from church, and
on the PowerPoint presentation
that runs before worship and in
the Gathering Area before and
after both services. Unlike at
camp, where often the
announcements were our only
source of information, here at
Christus, we have many places to
see what is going on and how to
get involved.
So, what to do? How do we
balance the need to share the
many opportunities for service and
growth here at Christus with the
need to keep that part of our
service to a reasonable length?
Some suggestions include having
me (Pastor Jen) simply remind
everyone to read your bulletin and
newsletter, and then moving
directly to "news to share" from
congregation members (e.g. news
about birthdays and anniversaries,
and other joys and concerns
worshippers wish to share with the
faith community). Some have
suggested moving the announce-
ments to a different point in the
worship service, although that
might not have an effect on the
length of the announcements
themselves. Some wish to leave
things as they are, for fear without
the additional promotional boost
from a verbal announcement,
things will get lost in the shuffle.
Others see no issue with the
announcement time and don’t feel
as though any changes are
required.
In the weeks to
come, we may be
trying some new
things with the
announcements.
One suggestion to
tighten up the
announcement
time that we plan
to implement immediately, is
having members who plan to
make announcements about
ministry opportunities sit in the
front at the beginning of the
service. This is intended to cut
down on the time for people to
make their way to the front, and
will give all speakers an idea of
how many others are sharing
information, so they can time their
announcement accordingly.
If you have suggestions for how to
handle this complicated, yet good
to have, problem (lots of
announcements means lots is
going on and that’s a good thing!),
please feel free to contact me or
speak with a Council or Ministry
Team member. We would love
your constructive suggestions!
In Christ,
Pastor Jen

The nursery is available Sunday mornings from 8:20 am until 11:45 am for infants through kindergarten-aged-
children. Or, if you prefer to bring your children to worship with you, they can help themselves to a blue bag
located just outside the Sanctuary doors. Blue bags contain paper, crayons, little toys and trinkets to help
keep small hands and brains busy during worship services. Please help us conserve offering envelopes and
other things in the pew pockets by using the supplies in the blue bags.

Join us Saturday, June 3 at 6 pm, for a viewing of the movie, The BFG (Big Friendly Giant). A young orphan
named Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) spends a sleepless night
wandering (as she does quite a bit) and catches a glimpse of a big friendly giant (Mark
Rylance) roaming the town. Terrified, Ruby runs to her bed and pretends to go back to
sleep, but the giant, knowing that she's seen him, takes her away to giant country for
fear that his kind would be discovered by humans. Together, the pair form an unlikely
friendship and a giant adventure ensues.
Popcorn and lemonade will be provided. Feel free to bring your own drinks and extra
snacks as well. Parents MUST accompany their children. Viewing will be held in the Sanctuary.

meetings. If you are willing and able, we need your help for a few hours on just one Tuesday
night each week this season to help keep up with the growing grass, landscaping and
general maintenance of the property. This is a great way to help your church by lending a
hand. We start Tuesday evenings at about 4:30 pm. Watch the Kiosk to sign up.

Help, I need to raise money for the mission trip. How can I do that?
You could go on a mission trip for FREE if you participate in the following fundraisers:
April: Flower Sale/Sell Flowers
May 12: 4:00 p.m. Flower Unloading
To sign up for a certain fundraiser, call Christine at 757-7775, or email her, at
christusyouth@christuschurch.org.
Attention Parents: You can help raise money for your son or daughter, too, by participating in the
fundraisers. You will earn a 1/2 credit for every hour you work. For example, if the youth makes $5.00 an
hour, you will make $2.50 an hour. Unless you are raising money for your own trip; in that case you will earn
exactly what the youth earn.

Bishop Gerald Mansholt
In the midst of many thoughts about the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, I have wondered what it is I
personally value or cherish about our Lutheran theology and heritage. There are so many things to lift up as gifts of
the Lutheran Reformation–the centrality of the Gospel, Law/Gospel theology, the catechisms, sacraments, left and
right kingdoms to name a few. But what captures my heart, brings me comfort and assurance, and sustains my life
and ministry, is the freedom of the Gospel.
In my first call serving as a pastor in Oklahoma, I faced a tough ethical choice and did not know what the right thing
to do would be. I was being asked to take someone to court over a very serious matter but I wasn’t sure that is
what I should do. I called one of my mentors who said he could see the value of pursuing legal action to curb some
really bad behavior on the part of some other Christians. But he also was aware of Paul’s words to the Corinthians
about settling differences among themselves and not going to court (I Corinthians 6). Then he said, “But
remember, Jerry, we are free in Christ. I will support you in whatever you decide.”
In 1520 Luther wrote to Pope Leo X in an open letter titled, “On the Freedom of the Christian.” There Luther says:
A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none.
A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.
When it comes to matters of eternal salvation, Luther says we are free from all those things that would destroy us--
the power of sin, the finality of death, and devious ways of the Devil. Past sins do not hang over our head; we are
given victory over death in Christ, and Satan also is fighting a lost battle. The victory belongs to Christ.
This is a huge load off our shoulders and a burden we need not carry in our hearts and souls. Our eternal destiny
is wrapped up in the saving death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Therefore, we are free to follow Christ in faith, and free to go where the cross of Christ might lead, casting aside
our fears and worries about how things might turn out.
In Christ we are free to enter into the messiness of life, the pain and politics of the world, into the private sorrows
and public joys of neighbors and friends and family members.
In Christ we are free to die to old habits of being ‘church’ and old patterns that no longer work. In freedom we get to
die and rise in new and surprising ways.
In the freedom of Christ, we get to observe the Sabbath, to rest from our labors and turn things over to God. We
can admit we are finite beings and while God calls us to participate in God’s mission in the world, he also gives us
the example of his own Son setting aside time for prayer and rest.
As the Lenten journey continues, I pray you are finding life and freedom in the journey to the cross. In Christ there
is life for all the living and the freedom that comes from the Good News of God’s gift of salvation.
I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity; and also a true human being, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord. He has redeemed
me, a lost and condemned being. He has purchased and freed me from all sins, from death, and the power of the devil, not with gold or silver but with
his holy, precious blood and his innocent suffering and death. From Martin Luther’s Explanation to the Second Article of the Apostles’ Creed.

YMCA Bus Tours: Kohler Summertime, Tuesday, August 18
It’s the Y’s annual excursion to Milwaukee to root for the home team (or the visiting team if you want!) Head to Miller Park for game between the Brewers and the Atlanta Braves. Lunch is on your own, so you can choose ballpark fare or bring a brown bag to enjoy before entering the stadium. The “Selig Experience,” is expected to be open at Miller Park by this time. Your loge bleacher seat down the first base line is situated to give some shade from the afternoon sun. The parking area and stadium are large spaces and there are some steps to negotiate getting to your seat. Fee: $51 or $56. Includes transportation and game ticket. Leave MSC 9:30am; Return 7:15pm
GermanFest: Culture and Church Service, Sunday, July 26
Get on the coach in downtown Appleton and be delivered to the gate at the Henry S. Maier Festival Grounds. We’ll arrive in time for the church service in Marcus Amphitheater. This year the service is Catholic Worship, in both German & English. An alternative to church attend-ance is to sit behind the amphitheater hill, gaze at the blue of the lake and watch the boats sailing or motoring. Afterwards, transition to the Festival grounds and enjoy everything German that the festival has to offer. Enjoy numerous stages of entertainment; catch the breezes along the lakeshore; shop in the marketplace; enjoy the demonstrations of skilled craftsmen and purchase something special from them; trace your family tree in the genealogy section, and, of course, try your choice of national beverages. Fee: $25 or $29. Includes transporta-tion and admission. Leave TCC 7:30am; return 6:15pm
For more information on these tours and to register, go to the YMCA of the Fox Cities, scroll down to programs, and click on Adult Bus Trips, or call the YMCA.
Women of the ELCA: Sat, April 1, join other Women of the ELCA, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1140 Tullar Rd, Neenah, for the Appleton Conference Spring Event. We will focus on using our time wisely with guest speaker, Chris Kniep, Winnebago County Family Living Extension Agent, and learn how to profit from our time spent in God’s word through a workshop in Bible journaling by Family Christian Store. Time will also be spent in a session with Ruth Laughlin learning how to breathe in prayerful meditation, followed by worship time. Registration is $15 (checks payable to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Women), due March 24. Event begins @ 8 am, nursery care upon request. In-kind gifts of any size bath towel, hand towel or wash cloth for the Christine Ann Center in Oshkosh appreciated. Questions, contact Leslie Fens, 915-8983, or fens3usa@att.net.
