Seraphic Fire’s GRAMMY® nominated Professional Choral Institute at Aspen Music Festival and School is the first summer program in the country designed to prepare emerging singers to work in the growing industry of professional ensemble singing. PCI alumni have now performed with nearly every professional vocal ensemble in the country. In 2012, Seraphic Fire and PCI received a GRAMMY® nomination for their recording of Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem.
PCI singers will have the opportunity to rehearse and sing two side-by-side concerts with Seraphic Fire: a collaboration with the Aspen Festival Orchestra in the Benedict Music Tent conducted by Robert Spano, and a performance in the Harris Concert Hall conducted by Seraphic Fire founder and artistic director Patrick Dupré Quigley. Participants will study in an intensive vocal and ensemble-skills curriculum, receiving individual and group vocal coachings from professional members of Seraphic Fire, and will participate in audition, resumé, and vocal masterclasses led by Quigley, Bass, and members of Seraphic Fire.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI STUDENT COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE is selected to create
a 5-minute work that Seraphic Fire will premiere during season subscription concerts. This
student works closely with Seraphic Fire Associate Conductor James K. Bass throughout the season and regularly attends rehearsals and performances in preparation for the premiere. The residency includes composition workshops and routine guidance from Seraphic Fire artists and conductors.

EDUCATIONFROM CLASSROOMS TO CONCERT HALLS
Seraphic Fire’s Youth Initiative, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the University of Miami, and Florida International University, is a free music education program serving elementary, middle, and high school students in some of Miami-Dade County’s most challenged communities. During multiple workshops throughout the school year, elementary students learn music theory, vocal pedagogy fundamentals, and elements of music history through interactive exercises with Seraphic Fire artists. In December and April of each season, Seraphic Fire performs a side-by-side concert with students from one of our partner elementary schools. These students receive weekly instruction through tandem work with the music specialist and an education liaison from one of the areas advanced degree music education programs. The elementary students perform pre-determined selections with the Seraphic Fire ensemble for approximately 1,200 pupils from the Miami-Dade County public schools. Secondary students are invited to participate in a one day masterclass working side-by-side with Seraphic Fire musicians in intensive sectionals, a joint rehearsal, and then performing in a concert with the Seraphic Fire ensemble that is open to the public free of charge.

26 | VOLUME I, ISSUE III 27 | SEASON EIGHTEEN
From nationwide performances and collaborations to educational endeavors and an endowment, the last 18 years have seen significant growth for Seraphic Fire. But as the organization enters the next decade, it is at a critical juncture – one that comes with an opportunity to capitalize on the momentum it has built to move into the future in a resounding way.
That is why Seraphic Fire is approaching the next 10 years with renewed enthusiasm and energy as it works to set standards for choral music. Guided by the creation of a first-ever strategic plan, efforts will focus specifically on transformations within four areas: musical experiences, engagement through education, recording and documentation, and artist and organizational development.
“We’ve taken a step back to look at the organization holistically and to determine how we can continue to elevate not only Seraphic Fire as a professional ensemble, but the choral industry as a whole,” said Dr. Thomas C. Boyd, Board Chair. “The result is a plan that will enable us to achieve our vision to become the exemplar of quality for, and contribution to, professional choral art in North America.”
MUSICAL EXPERIENCES – Present concerts that position Seraphic Fire as the preeminent advocate for professional choral performance.
Starting next season, the concert experience will begin to be reshaped to allow for stronger, more dynamic performances, impacting everything from the venue setup to the technology used before, during, and after. A more thoughtful season cadence also will ensure Seraphic Fire is able to harness the power of additional core artists and the best possible talent for each program.
“We are intentionally shifting the way we approach each concert to elevate the quality and vitality of our music,” said Patrick Dupré Quigley, Artistic Director. “From an artistic standpoint, we will have greater flexibility to bring more voices together to honor and reflect the nature of each piece we perform in settings that also enrich the occasion for our audiences.”
ENGAGEMENT THROUGH EDUCATION – Provide additional opportunities for children and adults to connect with Seraphic Fire through educational programming.
As the organization continues to seek new opportunities to broaden the positive impact Seraphic Fire has on neighboring communities, efforts will also focus on expanding existing educational programs. Locally, Seraphic Fire will work to engage more South Florida schools and universities through workshops, masterclasses, and residencies. Nationally, the Professional Choral Institute at Aspen Music Festival and School will expand to allow for additional paths of study for a more diverse pool of participants. Both initiatives will create greater awareness of Seraphic Fire among future leaders in the choral field.
RECORDING & DOCUMENTATION – Create a body of work that defines and advances professional choral music.
Developing and executing a process for the recording and documentation of Seraphic Fire’s music will help expand
not only the life of its performances, but also their reach. Through annual and archival recording
projects, the organization will be able to increase its audience base, gain radio play, and ultimately generate more awareness across the country.
ARTIST & ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT – Offer opportunities for Seraphic Fire artists and
administrators to advance their expertise.
Seraphic Fire’s artists and staff are at the center of everything the organization has accomplished. Providing
more professional advancement opportunities – including mentoring and subsidizing educational activities – is critical to ensuring the organization is as successful as possible.
“Looking back at Seraphic Fire’s journey, there is a lot to celebrate. We are here today thanks to the generous and devoted support of our audiences,” said Rhett M. Del Campo, Executive Director. “We have an opportunity to continue growing, expanding, and improving upon our craft, and hope that anyone as passionate as we are about choral music will join us in our efforts to build an even stronger foundation moving forward. As we implement these changes, we are eager to hear your thoughts. Feel free to email me at Rhett@SeraphicFire.org to share any feedback and look out for our audience surveys later this Spring.”
SERAPHIC FIRE SETS THE STAGE FOR A DECADE OF GROWTHA new strategic plan will guide the organization’s path forward, setting the stage for broader impact within the choral community.
“Looking back at Seraphic Fire’s
journey, there is a lot to celebrate.”

Seraphic Fire’s volunteers are an indispensable part of our organizational success. Volunteers create a warm, welcoming environment for our patrons by answering questions and assisting with programs, ticketing, and seating during concerts.
HEATHER OSOWIECKI “I began volunteering with Seraphic Fire in 2014 when I was still relatively new to Miami. It was a great way to immerse myself in my favorite art form while instantly connecting with a network of like-minded arts professionals — some of whom are now among my most cherished personal friends! Volunteering at performances gives me an opportunity to celebrate my enthusiasm for choral excellence with the local community. It is a zero-risk, high-return way to give back to the family of Seraphic musicians and administrators who consistently challenge themselves to provide the highest levels of artistic dedication on every program.”
As a host, you could have the wonderful opportunity to have a Seraphic Fire artist(s) stay in your home for the duration of their contract. If you are interested in hosting, please contact the Artistic Operations Manager, Alexis Aimé for more information at Alexis@SeraphicFire.org.
