Cholera : Situation in Central and Western AfricaCumulative situation at week W52 of 2016Highlights :

30 977 cases reported this year including 849 deaths, the case fatality rate of 2.7%.

Majority of cases are from the Congo River basin (DR Congo, RCA and Congo Brazzaville). This represents 92% of cases in the entire region with more than 28 000 cases in the DR Congo exclusively.

The southern of the Guinea Gulf basin faced two large outbreaks, in Benin (874 cases), with a spread in the state of Lagos in Nigeria. Sporadic cases have also been reported on Togo (Lomé). The second outbreak happened in Ghana with 602 cases (Kumasi and Cap Coast) in this basin onset at the end of the year (from week 42)

Other countries in the sub-region such as Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire, and Cameroon report suspected cases unconfirmed in laboratory. None to date has resulted in the isolation of Vibrio cholera 01.

Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali and Senegal are still Cholera free in 2016.
