CGD report urges fight againstdrug resistance

The Center for Global Development (CGD) has issueda new report urging the WHO to act against the rapidrise in drug resistance. The report, entitled "The RaceAgainst Drug Resistance", says that stakeholders need towork together to reduce drug resistance globally.

Rachel Nugent, chair of the Working Group whoprepared the report, says that "careless practices in drugsupply and use" are accelerating the occurrence of drugresistance. Because a number of factors are involved, ashared global response involving governments, pharmaceutical companies, distributors, hospitals, healthcare providers, pharmacists and patients is thebest approach.

The report makes four recommendations:• to use real time when tracking resistance – the WHO

and other global agencies should establish anetwork of surveillance laboratories that track theemergence and spread of resistance, and share theinformation globally

• secure the supply chain – standards should be set bydrug companies to ensure quality from themanufacturing process through to delivery to thepatient; best practices in drug prescribing anddispensing should be promoted

• regulation strengthening – partnerships should bemade between donors, economic commissions andnational drug regulators to monitor quality andenforce laws

• accelerate R&D for new drugs – a web-basedmarketplace should be created to connectresearchers and share ideas with investors.
