The report, entitled "The Race Against Drug Resistance", says that stakeholders need to work together to reduce drug resistance globally. Rachel Nugent, chair of the Working Group who prepared the report, says that "careless practices in drug supply and use" are accelerating the occurrence of drug resistance. Because a number of factors are involved, a shared global response involving governments, pharmaceutical companies, distributors, hospitals, healthcare providers, pharmacists and patients is the best approach. The report makes four recommendations: to use real time when tracking resistance – the WHO and other global agencies should establish a network of surveillance laboratories that track the emergence and spread of resistance, and share the information globally secure the supply chain – standards should be set by drug companies to ensure quality from the manufacturing process through to delivery to the patient; best practices in drug prescribing and dispensing should be promoted regulation strengthening – partnerships should be made between donors, economic commissions and national drug regulators to monitor quality and enforce laws accelerate R&D for new drugs – a web-based marketplace should be created to connect researchers and share ideas with investors.
