Cataloguing with COMARC format:
What now? Some dilemmas as seen by the Maribor Public Libray
Anka Rogina, 14 May 2014
TOGETHER TO UNCOVER NEW INSIGHTS
INTO LIBRARY SERVICES
MARIBORSKA KNJIŽNICA
Maribor Public Library
• Public library
– consisting of 19 departments
– covering 12 municipalities
• Attention to user groups and to collections
Cataloguing environment
Real environment:
• Not precisely determined cataloguing rules
• COBISS.SI system
– COBIB.SI ‒ the union bibliographic database and local
bibliographic databases
– COMARC format based on UNIMARC
– Authority control for authors’ personal names only
Users Groups
• Children
Target audience code in field 100e=a,b,c,d,(e)
• Users with special needs
– Blind, visually impaired users
– Deaf or partially deaf users
– Users with reading disabilities (people with dyslexia, people
who had experienced head injuries, slightly mentally disabled
users, etc.)
Target audience code?
Users Groups
• Accepted phrases:
„Large print“ – 106a=d, 300a
„Capital letters“ – 300a, 610a
„Books for people with dyslexia“ – 610a
„Books for the Blind“ – 106a=f, 610a
„Tactile books“ – 610a
„Sign language“ – 610a
• Difficulties in searching library material

Toys
Another similar example ‒ coding of toys:
• Toys can be better coded
– 001b=r
– 117a= ah, ap, aq, ar, at
• Missing codes for a more detailed subdivision of toys
– Educational/learning toy groups are marked by accepted
phrase in fields 300a and 610a
• Difficulties in searching
Toys
Collections
The collections are dispersed across the departments:
– SIKMB Local History Collection
– SIKMB Film Collection
The use of the accepted phrase in field 830 – General
cataloguer‘s note
– Field 852 – Location and call number does not exist in
COMARC/B
Collections
Relationships
• Data is used for informational purposes only
• Problem of indicating relationships
– Example: The relation between the record for a film and the
record for a book according to which the film is made
– Relations at the level of bibliographic records and not at the
level of authority records
Relationships
• Current practice
– The statement of the book title in field 300a and/or the
statement of the book‘s author in field 702, using the relator
code 100 ‒ bibliographic predecessor
– Adding an entry for the author and title of the book in field 423
– The statement of the author and title of the book in the 6XX
Subject analysis block
– An entry into field 488 is not possible because in COMARC/B
this field applies only to continuing resources
