Why did you choose BMIHMS for your studies? The main reason was the combination of the theory side of things and the practical side of things, and the culmination of doing the physical placement for 6 months in the industry. The other school was one at Manly and you could go to university and do a course at university. I think the options that were available really fit in with BM. There was so much practical experience to be gained as well as the theory experience.
From Guest Service Officer to Director of RoomsI graduated in August 2001. I returned to New Delhi and started at the Taj Hotel New Delhi as a receptionist. I worked there for about 10 months; then opportunities opened up at the Hyatt in Dubai, which was conducting interviews in New Delhi. There were about a hundred individuals being interviewed at the time, and only a few of us were selected – two of whom were from the School.
I joined the Grand Hyatt Dubai in 2003 as a Guest Service Officer. It was a massive property with 674 rooms and 196 apartments. I progressed with every year, becoming a Supervisor, an Assistant Manager, an Assistant Front Office Manager and the Front Office Manager respectively. In December 2009 I moved to the Grand Hyatt in Muscat, Oman, as the Director of Rooms. I’m very happy with the company so far, thanks to its corporate policies and structures, and its commitment to promoting from within; there is a very strong focus on developing people. I’m enjoying the role and Muscat is a beautiful place. There are about five or six BMIHMS alumni in Dubai and Oman and I’m in touch with them more or less.

BMIHMS ticks all the boxesThe principle reason why I chose BMIHMS was its excellent reputation, both academically and within the hospitality industry. I visited several five-star hotels in Sydney and asked their HR representatives about hotel schools; BMIHMS seemed to be the most highly regarded. I also had to convince my parents that it was a good idea to invest in my future career in hospitality, so I could gain a formal education. I wanted to know that I would be studying at a college with a strong reputation among potential employers; and my parents needed to know that they were making a sound investment. BMIHMS ticked all the boxes.
Surprise yourself – become an award-winning studentOn the academic front, I was thrilled to win two awards at the BMIHMS graduation ceremony. I had worked hard, but a lot of my work was done behind the scenes, so it was wonderful to have that recognition. I’d never seen myself as an award-winning student; at high school I had never been the ‘high distinction’ student – hence my reluctance to do academic study after school! – but I tried hard and I achieved a lot in the practical classes.
I still have quite a few friends from the School. We’re probably not the world’s best at keeping in touch because of our conflicting schedules, but we’re always talking. For me that’s one of the most important aspects of the School: your friends go on to work in the same industry. It’s great to have those bonds, not just for the friendships, but also to bounce ideas off each other and come up with solutions together; sometimes you want objective advice from someone who’s not involved, but who you can trust.

“ In this industry, the broader your experience, the more options you have”Tash Tobias
Get the balance right at BMIHMS When I started, back in 1994, there weren’t many hospitality schools to choose from in Australia – perhaps three or four. While they all had different strengths and subject specialisations, I felt the academic/practical balance at BMIHMS was right for me; added to which, it had a very good reputation.
Gain insights into how the industry worksBeing a BMIHMS student represented an incredible period of my life; the education and the people I met have shaped me considerably. Both my industrial placements were great experiences. For the first one I worked at Ayers Rock, Uluru; there were 11 of us from BMIHMS that went out together and learned lots while having fun. My second placement was at the Ramada Palm Cove Great Barrier Reef Resort, which was a completely different environment from the Red Centre.
Living in the School and running it like a hotel gave me a tremendous insight into how things work. The combination of the industry placement and the academic study – which takes place in the simulated hotel - is fantastic.
Graduates today might want to move straight into management roles – there’s nothing wrong with ambition - but if you can gain an appreciation of what it’s like to do the really hard jobs before becoming a manager, it is hugely beneficial for your career.

Put BMIHMS on your wish listI had an initial wish list when I was looking for a hospitality school: a course that would not take many years to complete, since I was a mature-age student; a school that had affiliations with a Swiss hospitality institution; an environment that simulated the hotel situation, to provide insights into the real; a balance between theoretical and practical studies; and a private education, where I felt I would be treated as a person and not merely a number.
I had looked into a few other hospitality management courses at universities, but I was not convinced. Then one day I came across a newspaper advertisement about BMIHMS and I knew immediately it was the right place for me.
You decide which path you want to takeNot everyone wants to be a General Manager; it is important to work out what you want to do. In order to understand fully the role of General Manager, it is best to gain as much diverse experience as possible; but if becoming a specialist is your aim, it is not as necessary to move around the globe. It is up to you to decide which path you want to take – but whether you are a specialist or a generalist, it is an industry that demands a lot and it takes drive, dedication and most importantly passion to deliver the very best guest experiences possible.
As a leader you have to take care of everybody, and to continually evolve the business by adjusting the sails to the wind. Most importantly you have to love what you do as bringing fun to the job always brings out the best in your people.
