Common Array Manager
• Provides common interface for Sun arrays> Meets customer demand for consistent
user interface across Sun product family > Lowers operations costs via simplified
workflows and “pools and profiles” functionality
> CAM glues it all together...
• Enables Sun “stickiness” in customer environments> Creates a consistent Sun “look and feel”
over a variety of array products> Enables every Sun array, as well as SMI-
S compliant third-party arrays, to be plug compatible with Sun's management environment
> Ease of use encourages customers to make their next technology purchase from Sun
Simplifies management of Sun arrays

Value Messages for CAM
Investment Protection
Consistent Look-n-Feel across productsSimilar User Interfaces across the 6000, 3000 and 1000 product family will reduce training cost and thus reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Software / Firmware
UpdateEasy, non-intrusive updates to software and firmware on the system from installation to retirement.
Web Browser User InterfaceAllows customers to manage from any workstation at the site.
Standards basedCommon NMI-S (SMI-S++) based APIs (northbound) for application and storage/component integration
Storage Profiles Customers can quickly provision storage based on application characteristics
Service AdvisorLinked online advise to replace components or diagnose and resolve issues
Remote MonitoringEliminates the need for on site maintenance by allowing customers and Sun Service personnel to remotely Monitor and Manage the system

CAM Deployment• Embedded – Upper Midrange Systems (69x0)
> Installed on Service Processor> Views/Manages a single array> Captive vs. External Storage
• Host-Based – Lower Midrange Systems (61x0, 6540, LCA)> Installed on host in network> Learns of arrays via registration or discovery> Communicates with array via out of band TCP/IP
Network or in band FC (Dependent on storage system)
> User selects array to manage> Supports “many-box” but not “multi-box”

CAM / SANtricity Rules• Customers with existing SANtricity
installations get a choice
• New installations get CAM
• Appeals process is available> Both are strong products with their strengths
and weaknesses> CAM is the strategic direction

Storage Pools & Profiles
Usage OrientedOLTP
eMail DSSArchive
Masked Complexity
Storage pools organize and facilitate capacity management around services delivered
•Each pool is associated with a unique Storage Profile> Multiple pools could use the same Storage
Profile
•Aggregates captive storage in the array> RAW storage can come from multiple
controllers/trays> View used and available space> Moved, add or delete capacity
Works with profiles to simplify tasks
•Adding storage to pool> Characteristics from associated profile tell CAM
how to configure raw storage (RAID, Segment Size, etc)
•Provisioning capacity from a pool (creating a volume)> Characteristics from associated profile tell CAM
how to configure the volume. (Stripe Width, etc)
Virtual Disk Creation a side effect of working with pools
Array HW/FW dictates Pool/Profile behaviors

• Volumes reside in pools
• You do not explicitly need to create Virtual Disks> Virtual Disks are created when:
> User explicitly asks for it when creating a volume.
> CAM needs to create one in order to satisfy a volume creation request.
• Need to be sure a pool exists with the right profile> Start with Profiles / Pools
• Create a volume from a pool and let CAM guide you through the process.

OK, what can I change?• Volumes
> Change the profile for the pool the volume resides in.> Changes all volumes in the pool.
> Move the volume to a different pool (with a different profile)
> Modify the properties on the volume details page> Modifiable properties do not overlap with Profile
properties.
• Profiles> Cannot modify Factory Profiles> Can only change name & description for user
profiles that are in use.
• Limits/restrictions driven by:> FW restrictions> CAM implementation of pools/profiles
CAM – The Power Forward of Storage Management
Sun Proprietary/Confidential: Internal Use OnlyVersion 5.0
Global Change Rules• Segment Size can only be changed by 1 step at
a time• Can only change the RAID level if the underlying
Virtual Disks have the appropriate number of disks.> Going to RAID 1 requires even number of disks.
• Cannot expand a Virtual Disk that is used in a pool whose profile specifies a fixed number of disks.
• Can only change one of the following properties at a time:> Segment Size, RAID Level, number of disks
> For example, cannot change to a profile that has both a new segment size and RAID level
CAM – The Power Forward of Storage Management
Sun Proprietary/Confidential: Internal Use OnlyVersion 5.0
Changing the Profile on a Pool • CAM filters out invalid
(potential) assignments
• In order to change to a Profile with a different RAID level:> All Volumes in the pool
must reside on the same Virtual Disk
> The Virtual Disk cannot have any other volumes residing in other pools
• In order to change to a Profile with a different Segment Size> Pool cannot contain more
than 1 volume due to restriction on having only 1 long-running operation on a volume or virtual disk at a given time
CAM – The Power Forward of Storage Management
Sun Proprietary/Confidential: Internal Use OnlyVersion 5.0
Changing the Pool on a Volume
• CAM filters out invalid (potential) assignments
• RAID Level change is only allowed if this volume is the only volume on the underlying Virtual Disk> Raid Level of Virtual
Disk changing which would impact other volumes

Maintenance Commands SSCS(1M)
NAME sscs - administration command for the Sun StorEdge 6140 arrays
SYNOPSIS (SUN STOREDGE 6140 COMMANDS) The Sun StorageTek 6140 array uses the commands in the following sections.
DESCRIPTION /opt/se6x20/cli/bin/sscs provides management for the Sun StorageTek 6140 array. The sscs command enables you to manage volumes, volume copies, snapshots, arrays, storage pools, profiles, virtual disks, and storage trays.
NOTE: sscs has an inactivity timer. The session terminates if you do not issue any sscs commands for 30 minutes. You must log in again when you issue a command after the timeout.
Benefits• All processing performed on the server.
• New features installed on the server immediately available to all clients.> Client upgrade not necessary with server upgrade
• Performance independent of client machine
• Code sharing with GUI

Alarms Aggregate ProblemsCAM aggregates events to provide better fault isolation
Example: Non-present SFP– CAM does not report empty SFP ports as problems
unless the SFP was originally there and then removed
Example: Controller failure – Other SW may report:
● Failed controller● 2x loss of communication with unknown device’ (this is the
batteries)● Tray Path Redundancy Failure● Volumes not on preferred path
– CAM will report this as a failed controller
Example: Loss of power to CEM – Other SW reports 22 events– CAM reduces this number to 1 entry
