Senior Adults Met Tuesday, August 18, 2015 The Senior Adult Ministry met

this past Tuesday, August 18, 2015, for their monthly luncheon. There were 25 of us who gathered to fellowship together, share lunch and hear from our speaker Michael Shepherd. Michael and his wife, Dayann, and son Josiah joined our congregation in May. Michael has spent the past 6 years involved in addressing homelessness in our community – serving with Pathways of Hope as the Housing and Community Engagement Manger and is currently Director of Operations for Grandma’s House of Hope, another local organization that provide housing for women facing significant crisis. Besides sharing the work that he has been involved in both of these areas, Michael talked about the new approach that is being used to work with homeless and those in crisis. One of the things he pointed out was that not only mental illness and substance abuse, but people who have lost work and homes due to other circumstances other than just bad choices make up our homeless community. He also spoke eloquently about how we as Christians need to look at the homeless community as people just like us who have needs of community and interaction with others to be able to seek help and work towards changing their lives with the resources available. He also praised our congregation for the love and help we offer. In fact, that is partly what helped Michael decide to join our congregation. It was an informative and affirming afternoon and we want to thank Michael for sharing with us. Our next meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015 in Chapman Lounge. Our speaker will be Rev. Nancy E. Brink, The Donna (Ford) and Fahmy Attallah Endowed Director of Church Relations Chapman University. Rev. Brink works with the DOC (Disciples on Campus) and will speak to us about our DOC ministry and Chapman University. Our group meets every third Tuesday of the month at 12:00 noon. Put Sept 15 on your calendar and join us. All seniors are invited and we are VERY flexible with the age that designates someone a senior.

Senior Book Club News The Senior Book Club is

currently reading Girl With a Pearl Earring which is a 1999 historical novel written by Tracy Chevalier. Set in 17th Century Delft, Holland, the novel was inspired by Delft School painter Johannes Vermeer’s painting, “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” Chevalier presents a fictional account of Vermeer, the model and the painting. We will meet on Thursday, September 3, 2015, in Chapman Lounge to discuss this novel. The Linbergs will be our hosts. Blankets in July As of August 16, you have generously donated $590 or enough for 118 blankets for Church World Service Outreach Blanket program. We need $205 more in the next two Sundays to meet our goal. If you would like to be a part of this vital project, please place your check in the amount of $5 for each blanket in the offering plate and write “blankets” in the memo line. Have you checked out the array of Linus and his blanket tags on the blankets in the Narthex? For each $5 you donate, your name will be written on one of the tags that will then be placed on the blanket in the Narthex, and you will be entered in the September drawing. To say “thank you” and to help you cool off a bit in this scorching weather, there will be three gift cards to Yogurtland for 3 lucky donors Thank you for caring for someone who might otherwise not be warm when the temperatures drop to near freezing. Downtown Market $766.01 Harvest Festival Thanks to those who

have already let me know that they would be willing to donate candy and/or work on this “hands-on” ministry. Your help is still needed! Casa de Oración is planning a Gigantic Harvest Festival for Saturday, October 31 from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. for the community. It will be a carnival atmosphere with games, bounce house, cotton candy, popcorn, and prizes. Each child will go home with a bag of goodies. This is where we come in. The Hospitality/Welcome Ministry Team is partnering with Casa to help with this event. Here are a few ways that you can share in this ministry and get to know our Hispanic sisters and brothers better:

1. You can provide candy for the goody bags. Just bring any amount that you would like to provide to the office and Donna will see that it gets to the right place. You can bring it anytime. That way we will have an idea of what we will need to purchase.

2. Casa de Oración will be setting up on Friday and Saturday and would appreciate any help we can provide.

3. Help to staff the event from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. (or any part of the time) on the 31st

Please let me know as soon as possible what you would like to be a part of so I can let the Casa people know for their scheduling and budgeting. Donna W. Important Dates to Remember September 13 – Rally Day September 26 – Rock the Loch, All day music

concerts at Loch Leven. Watch Caller for more details later. October 4 – 6 - Disciples Women Spiritual Growth

List Being Compiled For many months, following a decision made earlier this year by the Council of Elders and our Interim Pastor, Dale Suggs, these words have graced the last page of “The Caller.” First Christian Church . . .

Celebrating the diversity of all of God’s children, we are Disciples of Christ practicing

spirit-filled worship, faith-building community, and passion-powered service

to our neighborhood and to the world.

Where encounters with God are not only ordinary,

they’re extraordinary!

Where invitations not only happen on occasion,

they happen on every occasion.

Where hands not only give to the needy, they serve the least of these.

To increase the instances of the third of these three “where statements” happening, the Outreach Ministry, at the request of Dale Suggs, is compiling a list of organizations which need volunteers to help them do the work they do to serve people in our community. When we met this past Wednesday night, we received reports from individuals on our team about the contacts they’ve made with community-based organizations to get information about the volunteers they need to do their work. That list will be compiled and made available as soon as possible, most likely no later than next week's issue of “The Caller.” However, we who make up the Outreach Ministry are convinced that we cannot possibly have contacted all of the organizations in our area that need volunteers. So, if you know of an organization, or multiple organizations, that needs volunteers, please submit that information to the Church Office so it can be added to the information members of the Outreach Ministry have gathered about opportunities for us to engage

in “hands-on” ministry. Here’s what we need you to tell us: 1) The name of the organization; 2) a brief description of the

work for which volunteers are needed; 3) the organization's address; and, 4) the name and phone number of the person that potential volunteers need to contact. In addition, we hope that all of you who are currently involved in doing “hands-on” ministry with organizations in our community will let us know what you are doing and the name of the organization through which you are serving the community. If you prefer to be anonymous about what you’re doing, that’s fine. We just want to increase the awareness of all of our members about what we are doing in serving others and, most important, what opportunities are out there for all of us to consider doing. Thanks, in advance, for your in-put! The Outreach Ministry

Parlor Class Plans The Parlor Class will be

considering options for its next course of study when it meets on Sunday in Chapman Lounge at 9 A.M. The intention of the group is to make a decision about its next study topic either this Sunday, or the following one, so that the new course will begin no later than Sunday, September 13—Rally Day! If you’ve been thinking about getting involved in the Parlor Class, let us know of your interest by speaking to any one of these members of the class: Sybil Dittberner, Bev Reinke, Judi Smedly, Nancy Knott, Kathy Wright, Edee Stahnke, Ada Rodman, Virginia King, Leslie Beck, Lori Albrecht, Scott Richmond, Jackie Brown, Jan McCuen or Mariette Linberg. Ed Linberg is the Leader for this class. He’d love to have some additional members of the male gender become part of the Parlor Class! To give time for the materials to arrive for the new course of study to be chosen by the group, on August 30 and September 6, we will read and discuss the Lectionary texts assigned for those two Sundays. These “interim sessions” that focus on readings from the Old

6

and New Testaments, always generate a lot of discussion and, sometimes, new insights about the meaning of said texts, including ones with which we are very familiar. You’re welcome to join us on 8/30 and 9/6 as we wait for the new study resources to arrive for our use beginning on 9/13. When we’ve decided on the new course, we’ll be sure to inform you through “The Caller."
