Be prepared…….because SPAD alumni land in
some pretty important places. For example,
Yes, it was the familiar face of Dr. Mary Hums that you saw recently on the front page of the Univer-
sity of Louisville’s Website (http://php.louisville.edu/news/news.php?news=641). Along with Dr.
Wayne Blann from Ithaca College in New York, Dr. Hums was one of only two persons from the
United States selected to attend the International Olympic Academy Educators Session in July.
More than 80 educators from 42 different countries attended the academy which was held in Olym-
pia, Greece, about a 5 minute walk from the archeological site of the Ancient Olympic Games. The
International Olympic Academy functions as an International Academic Centre for Olympic Studies,
Education, and Research. It is an international forum for free expression and exchange of ideas
among the Olympic Family, intellectuals, scientists, athletes, sport administrators, educators, artists
and the youth of the world. The Academy brings together people from all over the world, in a spirit of
friendship and cooperation. Participants are urged to use the experiences and knowledge gained in the
IOA to promote Olympic Ideals in their respective countries.
Dr. Hums says “it was a tremendous honor to be chosen to represent the United States at the Interna-
tional Olympic Academy.” During her time in Greece, she studied with scholars from around the
world, all of whom share a common research interest in some aspect of the Olympic Movement. She
was also selected to present a paper, one of only 14 presentations from the 80+ participants. The pa-
per focused on “Ethical Issues Facing the Paralympic Movement.” She attended conference lectures
and discussion groups on various aspects of Olympism and the Olympic Movement, and also had a
tour of the archeological site of the Ancient Olympic Games. But most of all, Dr. Hums reiterates that
“the best part was meeting and interacting with a variety of different people. It was an amazing ex-
perience to share ideas with scholars of this magnitude from around the world.” She says “attending
the IOA was a dream of a lifetime for me!”

SPAD offers new class in Athletic Fundraising
The Sport Administration program
is proud to announce a new course
on the topic of “Athletic Fundrais-
ing.” SPAD 561 was taught this Fall
by Dr. Ian Patrick.
The course introduces students to
the key distinctions between sport
sponsorship and fundraising in
higher education and athletics. In
addition, students are introduced to
the concept of 'development' as it
relates to both higher education and
athletics in United States institu-
tions. Students learn effective so-
licitation strategies for both annual
and major gifts and come to fully
understand the general fundraising
cycle that is used in both athletics
and higher education. Finally, the
class explores different chal-
lenges and opportunities in fund-
raising for all divisions of the
NCAA and NAIA.
Although the course is not of-
fered during the Spring semester,
students should keep alert for
offerings in the future as it is an
excellent choice for an elective.
his B.S. in Management from
Georgia Tech and an M.S. in
Sport Administration from
The University of Louisville.
Professor Thorn has worked
in many areas of sport includ-
ing sport marketing for the
Georgia Tech Athletic Asso-
ciation, Assistant to the Com-
missioner of the Mid-South
Conference and Compliance
intern at the University of
Louisville.
Recent events for the SPAD
Club included guest speakers
and a trip to the U of L versus
Middle Tennessee football
game in Nashville. Speakers
included Adrienne Johnson
(Outreach coordinator for U of
L Athletics), Terry Hasseltine
(Deputy Executive Director of
the Kentucky Sports Authority)
and J. Bruce Miller (author
and local lawyer).
Students participating in the
trip to Nashville for the U of L
versus Middle Tennessee game
also enjoyed a facility tour of
the Gaylord Entertainment
Center, home of the NHL’s
Nashville Predators. The tour
gave students insight into the
inter-workings of the facility
including programming, sched-
uling requirements, and manag-
ing and ticketing various
events.
The SPAD Club creates oppor-tunities for members to become actively involved in the sport industry and provides access to industry professionals and to various networking opportuni-
ties that prepare stu-dents for entering the dynamic sport mar-
ketplace. Contact Dr. Pack (simon.pack@louisville.edu) for more information.

ployment and disability discrimination;
the limits of authority of amateur sport
governing bodies; and the original juris-
