SPAD offers new class in Athletic Fundraising

The Sport Administration program

is proud to announce a new course

on the topic of “Athletic Fundrais-

ing.” SPAD 561 was taught this Fall

by Dr. Ian Patrick.

The course introduces students to

the key distinctions between sport

sponsorship and fundraising in

higher education and athletics. In

addition, students are introduced to

the concept of 'development' as it

relates to both higher education and

athletics in United States institu-

tions. Students learn effective so-

licitation strategies for both annual

and major gifts and come to fully

understand the general fundraising

cycle that is used in both athletics

and higher education. Finally, the

class explores different chal-

lenges and opportunities in fund-

raising for all divisions of the

NCAA and NAIA.

Although the course is not of-

fered during the Spring semester,

students should keep alert for

offerings in the future as it is an

excellent choice for an elective.

his B.S. in Management from

Georgia Tech and an M.S. in

Sport Administration from

The University of Louisville.

Professor Thorn has worked

in many areas of sport includ-

ing sport marketing for the

Georgia Tech Athletic Asso-

ciation, Assistant to the Com-

missioner of the Mid-South

Conference and Compliance

intern at the University of

Louisville.

Recent events for the SPAD

Club included guest speakers

and a trip to the U of L versus

Middle Tennessee football

game in Nashville. Speakers

included Adrienne Johnson

(Outreach coordinator for U of

L Athletics), Terry Hasseltine

(Deputy Executive Director of

the Kentucky Sports Authority)

and J. Bruce Miller (author

and local lawyer).

Students participating in the

trip to Nashville for the U of L

versus Middle Tennessee game

also enjoyed a facility tour of

the Gaylord Entertainment

Center, home of the NHL’s

Nashville Predators. The tour

gave students insight into the

inter-workings of the facility

including programming, sched-

uling requirements, and manag-

ing and ticketing various

events.

The SPAD Club creates oppor-tunities for members to become actively involved in the sport industry and provides access to industry professionals and to various networking opportuni-

ties that prepare stu-dents for entering the dynamic sport mar-

ketplace. Contact Dr. Pack ([email protected]) for more information.

several federal statutes involving anti-

trust, educational rights, civil rights, em-

ployment and disability discrimination;

the limits of authority of amateur sport

governing bodies; and the original juris-

diction of the Supreme Court. This analy-

sis will track the use of the term “sport”
