Samuel was born in 1567, in Brauge,France.

When he was 20 he went to war for 5 years.

• Samuel crossed the Atlantic 11 times.

• On his 11th time he made it to the new world.

• In 1608 Champlain built the first fort in New France.

• He was nicknamed the “Father of New France.”

• Samuel was trained in navigation and map making.

• Sometime in his life he wrote a book on how Indians lived.

• Between 1599 and 1601 Champlain voyaged to the west Indies with a Spanish expedition.

• In 1609, while traveling with an Indian war party, he discovered the lake that bears his name.

• In 1613 he explored far up the Ottawa River in search of the new lands and more furs.

• The fur companies had appointed Champlain governor of Quebec in 1612, and he hoped that the tiny settlement would grow into a strong colony.

• In 1628, while England and France were at war, English ships blockaded Quebec.

• In 1603 he made his first voyage to New France as a member of a fur-trading expedition.

• Champlain first visited Canada in 1603, sailing up the St. Lawrence River as far as Montreal.

• When New France was restored to France in 1632, Champlain returned.
