GLOBALIZATION:

Can be defined as:

Increasing linkage between the world’s people as natural and artificial barriers fall

Widening and deepening of international flows of trade, finance and information in a single, integrated local market.

Transformation of the world into a global village, as borders disappear, distances shrink and time shortens.

GOALS OF GLOBALIZATION:

WHY IS GLOBALIZATION IMPORTANT?

Free trade is supposed to reduce barriers such as tariffs, value added taxes, subsidies, and other barriers between nations. This is not true. There are still many barriers to free trade. For example, the Washington Post states the problem is “that the big G20 countries added more than 1,200 restrictive export and import measures since 2008.

Globalization is supposed to represent free trade which promotes global economic growth; creates jobs, makes companies more competitive, and lowers prices for consumers.

Competition between countries is supposed to drive prices down. In most cases, this idea isn’t being upheld as many countries are manipulating their currency to get a price advantage.

It also provides poor countries, through infusions of foreign capital and technology, with the chance to develop economically and by spreading prosperity, creates the conditions in which democracy and respect for human rights may flourish. However, this is an ethereal goal that hasn’t been achieved in most countries.

A GLOBAL GAME OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

• Challenges of the medical sector: consumerization of healthcare devices. The rise in mobile healthcare platforms, products with shorter lifecycles and increasing complexity has resulted in the endemic dilution of product quality and the rise of medical device failure.

A NEW ERA OF MEDICINE

Messages on your doctor’s wrist

Improving the speed and quality of healthcare

39% of healthcare professionals support text messaging due to time efficiency

Inefficient communication triples admission time, doubles emergency response time, and costs an estimated $1.7 million per year in wasted time.

Improving communication can reduce patient injuries from medical records by 30%

Smart watches will provide physicians with instant access to critical information all with the flick of a wrist.

Smart watches will also improve the accuracy of patient records.

POLICY MAKERS NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO GLOBALIZATION AND TECHNOLOGY BECAUSE:

The decisions, particularly on the research and development, as well as on the implementations of technology, are made in the organization for economic co-operation and development (OECD) countries which are the headquarters of global corporations

Imported technology alters the quantity and quality of employment and also the modes of communication and consumption of men and women in the region.

Imports of technology affect the modes of production and employment. Internet technologies facilitate the way companies can locate and manage production away from its main site to geographically distributed centers. This expands employment possibilities of men and women who live away from metropolises, in suburbia, in rural areas – both in the manufacturing and services sector.
