Definition: Crude oil is "unprocessed oil", which is also known as petroleum.
- fossil fuel - varies in color - varies in
viscosity - contains
hydrocarbon, which contains a lot of energy
Carbon - 84% Hydrogen - 14% Sulfur - 1 to 3% (hydrogen sulfide, sulfides,
disulfides, elemental sulfur) Nitrogen - less than 1% (basic compounds with
amine groups) Oxygen - less than 1% (found in organic
compounds such as carbon dioxide, phenols, ketones, carboxylic acids)
Metals - less than 1% (nickel, iron, vanadium, copper, arsenic)
Salts - less than 1% (sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride)
Toxicity Exhaust Acid Rain Climate
Change
Crude Oil Makes plenty of fuels: Gasoline, diesel
fuel, kerosene etc Makes almost all
fertilizers and pesticides
Lastly, it makes tar, petroleum coke (solid fuel)
1. Widely and easily distributed all over the world
2. Provides everyday products
3. Provides a constant source of power
1. Produces greenhouse emissions
2. Limited supply because it is a non-renewable source
3. Can harm marine life.
Over the years the prices of oil has seen plenty of fluctuations. Lead to political
uprising and economic recovery
Countries fighting over crude oil Importance to economy
and military Irregular geographic
distribution Past negative
environmental issues High amount of toxic
levels
Kuwait (Jan 21, 1991): 378 Million Gallons
Hurricane Katrina (2005): 7.98 Million Gallons
Deepwater Horizon (April 20, 2010): Ongoing
The consumption rate is increasing due to population growth and technology. Since it is a non-renewable source, the heavy reliance on oil makes it difficult to reduce consumption.
Oil spills and extraction cause environmental harm
The combustion of the oil releases fine particles which lead to serious respiratory problems.
Crude oil is responsible for approximately 40% of greenhouse emissions in the U.S.
Inspect for damage and leaks in equipment each year.
On the boat, check to see that all fuel lines and hoses are in good conditions and that seals and connections are tight.
Examine oil tank, pipes and supply lines for corrosion or over pressure
Replace all damaged parts with new fittings
Carpool and drive only when it is necessary because this will help to reduce transportation emissions
