100patientsreceived 1 or Zmg 1Mdosesof butorphanol(Bristol) for postoperative pain for 1-8days after hysterectomy,cholecystectomy, herniorrhaphyor other uncomplicatedsurgical procedures. Pain reliefpeakedat I /2-1 hour afterinjection and some reliefpersistedfor 2-3 hours after 1mg and3·4 hours after 2mg.Butorphanolprovidedeffective pain reliefin 97 patientsand-was either ineffective or not toleratedin 3.After a 1mgdose,no side-effects were reportedbut 9 patientsreportedside-effects after 2mg(drowsiness 5, 'dreaming' I,tenseness I , tachycardia I , euphoria 1).No changes in bloodchemistryoccurredwhich were attributableto treatment.

'The rapidity of effect, duration of activity. andrelative freedom from side-effects observed forbutorphanol in this study strongly suggest that thenew agent represents an important. clinicallysignificant development in the field of analgesia.'
