THURSDAY 7 AUGUST 2014, WEEK 4 TERM 3 2014
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents,
On Monday our whole school participated in the Bungendore War
Memorial Bell Ringing Ceremony, which commemorated the
centenary of the commencement of the First World War. Our
captains and vice captains opened the ceremony and hoisted the
flags to the masthead. Back at school, Harrison was our bell ringer.
Staff were very moved by the ceremony, and commented on the
excellent respect the students showed throughout the service.
Last Thursday and Friday evenings our dance group represented our
school at the Queanbeyan Performing Arts Festival. This festival is
just one of many that are held in Education Week to celebrate to the
students and staff of our NSW Public Schools. Mrs Leggett
coordinated our dance group this week and asked me to include the
following report:
“I was privileged to take 38 students to Canberra Theatre last week to perform at the 2014
District Arts Festival. Our piece, The Rainbow Serpent, was a mixture of narrative, drama and
dance. The children learned that dress rehearsals are for ironing out technical hitches, and as
always, it was all 'alright on the night'. A huge thank you to Anne Read and Trish Massa-
Stevens, we couldn't have done it without you.”
2014 BOOK WEEK 18th
– 22nd
August
We are going to be holding a number of events to celebrate Book Week this year. As mentioned in last week’s newsletter we will be holding our Book Week activities on Wednesday 20
th August
during the middle session. These will begin in the Hall at 12:15pm with a K-2 and then a Primary parade. Students will then split into groups to complete two activities which have been organised, and will be run by, our Year 6 students. Year 6 have been working very hard on designing these activities for the last few weeks and they look like they are going to be great fun!
Students are allowed to come dressed up on the Wednesday as their favourite book character. This does not have to be a complicated costume; they might just wear normal clothes, as there are
many everyday people in books. The students have been asked to also bring in either the book or a drawing of the cover of their book as they will be sharing and discussing their characters with their class.
Please consider the practicality of this costume as it will need to be appropriate for them to wear for school activities and the weather. We would ask that you also assist us by ensuring that no weapons are brought along as a part of their costume.
Our Book Week Activity Day is just one of the activities Mrs Donaldson has organised for this week so please read Mrs Donaldson’s full report later in this newsletter.
Last week 48 students represented our school at the PSSA District Athletics Carnival. As always we are proud of all our students’ efforts. Well done! However a special mention must go to the 17 students who will now represent us at the PSSA Regional carnival. Congratulations to; Emma, Hayley, Sally, Amber, Layla, Alex, Kaitlin, Georgia, Sophie, Luca, Dayne, Harry, Ramsey, Jack, Jarrod, Erik, and Mitchell.
Yesterday Stage 3 enjoyed a visit to the National Museum. The children participated in a program called ‘Australian Journeys’ and looked at exploring ways in which people and objects are connected to Australia and the world. The children had Museum Educators working with them after which they had opportunities to explore the various galleries. Mrs Dabusti said that it was a very informative and enjoyable day.
Have an enjoyable and safe week.
Warm regards,
Ros Roworth
Our Trip to the Museum.
On the 23rd
July 2014, Stage 2 students and teachers went on an excursion to the National
Museum of Australia.
First we got on the bus where we were told to sit on our seats with our seat belts. We sang
and laughed all the way to the museum. Then our leader Amanda showed us a special the-
atre and told us about everyday objects and how they have a story. For example, a suitcase
that came from a family in Latvia. After that people from our class handed out worksheets.
Amanda split our classes into groups and put us all on different levels of the museum. We
walked around and spotted a gold Olympic medal, a cannon from Captain James Cook, a
singing chair, horse equipment from a man named Thomas Rutledge, who lived in Gid-
leigh, Bungendore, and an old TV. There where bells in the cabin outside the Visions Thea-
tre also.
After we looked through the gallery we ate our lunch talked and laughed.
When we went back inside we looked at a gallery. Inside was a story about a boy who died
on his 19th
birthday when a car struck him. We also saw the Wiggles and learnt that they
formed in 1991.
We saw a giant marsupial, a giant windmill and a mirror passage that we walked through
(It was freaky!). I saw an Opera House made out of shells and another made from card-
board. On the other side of the gallery it was about Animals.
Last of all we go to go in Circa, a moving theatre. It was very interesting. It was all about
Aboriginal and their history and how Australia has changed over the past 200 years.
Finally we got back on the bus to go home. Most of us were really tired but some would not
stop laughing.
It was one of the funniest Museum trips I have ever had.
