THOMPSON RIVERS UNIVERSITY - Kamloops www.tru.ca Admission Requirements
START UNIVERSITY EARLY!
Grade 11 Students can apply for EARLY Admission - 12 months before they actually graduate. A special ‘Grade 11 Early Application
Form’ will be available in the Spring, and students may apply between May 1st and June 15th 2011, for admission to TRU| in September
2012.
This is open ONLY to students applying for Bachelor of Arts (B.A.); Science (B.SC.) Business (B.B.A.), Natural Resource Science
(B.N.R.S.), and Computing Science (B.S.C.) degrees, and the Computer Systems Operations & Management (CSOM) Diploma.
Advanced Registration Priority - For students entering first year University in ARTS, Science and Business degrees:
Students with good academic marks in grade 11/12 can be given an earlier “Registration” date, based on marks in four academic courses:
Arts: English and 3 other provincially examinable courses
Business: English, Math (Principles) and 2 other provincially examinable courses
Science: English, Math (Principles) and 2 other provincially examinable courses
ADMISSION TO TRU - OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS
Many students apply for admission while still in Grade 12, while others apply to TRU as transfer students from other Colleges of Universi-
ties
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Students in degree programs can start in either September or January, and Summer Session courses start in May. Most diploma and certifi-
cate programs start in September, but a few start in August or January each year, so be sure to check when you apply. Requirements for
admission depend on the admission process in place for each program.
The basic requirements for admission to most programs include:
Completion of BC Grade 12 (or equivalent) or Mature Student Status
BC English 12 or English 12 – first Peoples (or equivalent)
*73% minimum** (combined course & government exam mark), or LPI test*** (level4), or TRU English 060, or TRU
ESAL 0570/0580 (or equivalent) (C+)
Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Resident status or Student Visa
Along with basic requirements, students need the specific high school course requirements set by each program.
TRU strongly recommends that all students complete as many Grade 12 level courses as possible, including computing, Math****, Sci-
ences and Social Sciences.
Mature Student Status: Any applicant at least 19 years old and out of school or at least two years will be considered for Mature
Student Status. The grade level requirement will be waived but individual course prerequisites for the program must be met.
Applicants under 19 will be assessed individually.
** Within the last five years
***within the last two years
**** visit www.tru.ca/newmath for the latest information on requirements under the new BC Math curriculum
THREE Kinds of Admission Processes: There are three different program admission processes at TRU. The first thing you should know
is which admission process is in place for your program of interest.
Open Admission: Applications are accepted, and admission determined on a first applied, first admitted basis for qualified applicants,
using the date by which the application was received. The programs that offer Open Admission are Bachelors of Arts (|B.A), Science
(B.Sc), and Business (B.B.A) degrees. Students who apply while still in Grade 12 will be give conditional admission.
Being admitted and invited to register is not a guarantee that space will be available in all desired courses, as new-student registration prior-
ity is based on the date of application and year level.
Limited Admission: When the number of seats available in a program is limited, the applications are accepted, and admission determined
on a first applied, first admitted basis, using the date by which applicants have met all of the application requirements.
Limited admission programs frequently include an admission interview, questionnaires, pre-testing, orientations, and letters of reference.
Details are sent to applicants in an Admission Requirement Package.
Selective Admission: There are a limited number of seats, and all applications are accepted up to a pre-determined deadline date. They
are then assessed using a selection process that may include GPA standings and other criteria that may include an admission interview,
questionnaires, pre-testing, orientations, and letters of reference. Details are sent to applicants in an Admission Requirements Package.
Following the assessment and ranking of qualified applicants, offers of admission will be made only to those students selected, and others
may be put on a wait-list. Students have 21 days to accept the offer by payment of the Commitment fee.
Several university degrees as well as a number of specialized two-year diplomas are selective admission programs.
