Natural Surveillance¨ Make all parking areas visible through windows and

doors.¨ Screen or conceal dumpsters, but don’t create blind

spots.¨ Position main entrances in high-profile areas, this

allows for greater visibility.¨ Position cash registers near the front windows, but not

directly next to the glass.¨ Avoid fencing, walls, and landscaping that may

obstruct visibility or provide hiding places.¨ Ensure any public pay phones are in highly visible

areas, remove pay phones completely if possible.

Lighting has two purposes within the CPTED model

1. Lighting is used for the illumination of human activity.

2. Lighting is used for security.

Access Control

¨ Denies admission– Doors, shrubs, fences, gates, locks, bars,

alarms, and guards¨ Creates perception of risk

– Requires criminal to decide if risk is worth the effort

¨ Deters crime by moving criminals to easier targets

Landscaping¨ Uses

– Beautify property– Define space– Provide shade

¨ Types of materials– Trees– Rocks/bark/etc.– Groundcover– Shrubbery– Grass/lawn material

Landscaping

¨ Walkways and lawn areas symbolize “OK” areas to walk and for people to be.

¨ Rocks, bark, groundcover, and shrubbery identify “personal” areas, places outsiders shouldn’t be.
