For exam-ple, theyre both ambitious, career-minded young women. Giovanna is asuccessul designer in a well-known ash-ion company. Ricarda has just been pro-moted to senior management o a smallbut renowned private bank. Tey bothinherited a passion or cooking romtheir Italian mother. But their opinionsdier on the topic o kitchens.
Its Saturday evening. Ricarda has in-vited Giovanna or dinner in her new fat.While Ricarda is busy cooking, Gio-vanna takes a closer look round Ricardasbeautiul home. Her gaze wandersthrough to the kitchen, where Ricarda ischopping the vegetables. Her commentsare revealing: Your kitchens really beau-tiul! she says. For me, a kitchens like abeautiul dress, Giovanna continues.I have to eel comortable in it. And ithas to go with my personality. Tats whyit has to look right. Itsnot until you combine interesting mater-ials and nishes that you get a ascinatingkitchen. No, youre wrong, countersRicarda. A beautiul kitchen is worthless i the workfows arent right, i therestoo little storage space and the cabinetsare di cult to open and close. Whilesaying this she nudges the ront o the

Ricarda puts the knie down with whichshe has just nely sliced the zucchini. Soyoull be surprised when I tell you thatwhat I did rst was to think about a prac-tical design. Why does Blum have a Require-ment Research Department?We want to develop practical

we investigate into how people actuallyuse their kitchens, how they cook and
what liestyle they have. Our ndingshelp us develop products that are tailoredto these needs.How long has Blum been doingresearch into kitchen users needs?Weve done almost ten years o intensiveresearch. Weve monitored kitchen use,done research and carried out detailedanalyses o habits, workfows, etc.How much research material have youcollected over the years?Id say weve got about one thousandhours o lm material rom countries allover the world. More countries areplanned over the next two years, e.g. In-dia, unisia, Malaysia and Sweden.
Are there any major diferences in howpeople use their kitchens all over the
world?One big dierence is the rice pull-out orve to ten kilos o rice in Asian countries.Or the baguette pull-out in France, spe-cial disinection equipment in Chinaand the sh grill in Japan. Another in-
teresting example is that in Australia theyhave an outdoor kitchen or barbecuesand an indoor kitchen or preparingdaily ood.
What are the main things we all havein common?Many typical tasks are the same in kit-chens all over the world. For example, themain work area, which should be at least90 cm wide, is ideally between the sinkand the hob. Te worktop is just the rightheight i the distance between slightlybent arms and counter is about 15 cm.
And o course, ergonomic aspects alwaysplay an important role. No matter whichcountry you live in, its not a good ideato have to bend down, stretch or evenclimb onto worktops to reach things.Everyone all over the world recognisesthe advantages o pull-outs that provideeasy access to contents.
What insights do you gain fromRequirement Research?We identiy major and minor needs. Weuse our ndings to develop new products.

system into our ttings. Even minorneeds lead to new practical ideas. Weound that people all over the world getinto a tangle with cling lm. Tats how

I have to thinkabout where the ships are scheduled to berthand consider stowage plans and transporta-tion routes, says Bob, mug o coee in hand.Incoming and outgoing containers, thestorage space required, the position ocranes and shunting routes all have to beprecisely planned. Not an inch or minute is
wasted. A small mistake could cost the port

Home owners Lilly and Bill rom Mis-sissauga, Canada, a small town not arrom the Niagara Falls, are a little ex-cited. Teyre having un and are in ullparty preparation mode when we arrive.Every year, they organise a birthdayparty or their two daughters. Its becomequite a tradition. But things are dierentthis year. Tis year the amily will becelebrating in the hub o their home: thekitchen.
Te birthday girls are Angela and Sarah,Lilly and Bills 26-year-old twins. Tebrilliant thing about the birthday partyis that I only have to do it once a year,says Lilly with a quiet smile. But thatmeans catering or double the number oguests (who could arrive at any momentand have no idea o the new party set-ting). Mums birthday parties have al-
ways been a big event or us since we weresmall, says Angela. But this kitchenpartys going to be really special, addsSarah with eager anticipation.
We take a closer look at the new partylocation. At rst glance the kitchen looks
quite ordinary. But when we watch Lillyadding the nal touches to party dishes,
we immediately see whats so special. Tewall cabinets apparently open by them-selves, and the drawers close sotly andeortlessly. Te whole kitchen seems tobe in motion with Lilly. Were impressed

with her guests. And so even cutting thecake turns out to be a little event. At thismoment we recognise another advantageo a kitchen party: everythings withineasy reach and immediately to hand! Justas we are about to try a slice, we hear a
loud smacking sound and curiously turnround to nd out who it is. Oliver thedog has also discovered the cake and isgiving us a hungry stare. All this excite-ment has made us orget you, says Lillylaughing and gives the dog a piece o cake.In a kitchen like this, a dogs lie is notso bad ater all.

For example, I didnt want to have to bend down anymore or crawl into the back of a cab inet to dig
things out. Thats why my base units all have drawers. Take time to think about design options and
then make a deliberate investment which will pay off every day.
To set things straight: autopilot is a very useful function but not when it comes down to buying a
kitchen! You need to take the initiative! Make the most of your visit to a kitchen shop to try out and
test as much as you can. How does it feel? What do you really like?
Imagine what itll be li ke in your new kitchen. Try things out and decide yourself what is best for you.
I discovered this new wall cabinet l ift system by chance. I changed my mind at the last minute and
