Theyre identical twins the spittingimage o one another. When they

were at school they had great untricking their schoolmates, teachers andlater on their admirers. Like most twins, theyre similar in many ways. For exam-ple, theyre both ambitious, career-minded young women. Giovanna is asuccessul designer in a well-known ash-ion company. Ricarda has just been pro-moted to senior management o a smallbut renowned private bank. Tey bothinherited a passion or cooking romtheir Italian mother. But their opinionsdier on the topic o kitchens.

Its Saturday evening. Ricarda has in-vited Giovanna or dinner in her new fat. While Ricarda is busy cooking, Gio-vanna takes a closer look round Ricardasbeautiul home. Her gaze wandersthrough to the kitchen, where Ricarda ischopping the vegetables. Her commentsare revealing: Your kitchens really beau-tiul! she says. For me, a kitchens like abeautiul dress, Giovanna continues.I have to eel comortable in it. And ithas to go with my personality. Tats whyit has to look right. You wont like yourkitchen or long i it doesnt look good.Even more so i its part o the living-room like in your fat. Youre absolutelyright, agrees Ricarda. But we shouldntorget the practical side o a kitchen. Some years ago, Ricarda did a voluntarytraineeship in a top restaurant and wasamazed by the perect organisation andsmooth workfows o a proessionalkitchen. Te experiences she gainedgreatly shaped the design o her newkitchen.

Yes, o course, answers Giovanna. Butyou have to admit that kitchens alwayshave pretty much the same layout. Itsnot until you combine interesting mater-ials and nishes that you get a ascinatingkitchen. No, youre wrong, countersRicarda. A beautiul kitchen is worthless i the workfows arent right, i therestoo little storage space and the cabinetsare di cult to open and close. Whilesaying this she nudges the ront o the

waste pull-out with her knee. It opensautomatically and Ricarda disposes othe onion peel. She pushes it hard withher oot and instead o banging to, itcloses sotly and eortlessly. Giovanna islost or words. She hadnt noticed thiseature in her sisters kitchen.

Ricarda puts the knie down with whichshe has just nely sliced the zucchini. Soyoull be surprised when I tell you thatwhat I did rst was to think about a prac-tical design. I decided on the materialsand colours aterwards. Giovanna isamazed and instantly interested. Shethinks her sisters kitchen is somethingelse. But she hadnt looked at it rom thepractical side o things. Sure theressomething beautiul about watchingRicarda cooking. Her movements aresmooth. Everything she does is easy, andRicarda is preparing everything ar asterthan she would do. Up till now Gio-

vanna thought that this was mainlybecause o Ricardas energetic style ocooking. Ricarda moves into the centreo her kitchen. Look here. I just need totake a ew steps to prepare the ood, cookand even to do the washing up. Every-thing is where it should be. Te wide andheavily laden pull-outs can be opened

Twin sisters Giovanna and Ricarda may look alikebut they sometimes differ in their opinions. For

example, on the issue of kitchens. Must kitchensbe primarily beautiful or practical? Ricarda tellsGiovanna that they can actually be both.

    For Giovanna, its most important

what a kitchen looks like. You

can only feel comfortable in a

    beautiful kitchen.

    Ricarda is not against beautiful

design but for her, a kitchenmust primarily be practical.

Why does Blum have a Require-ment Research Department? We want to develop practical

ttings solutions that have useul unc-tions and that make lie easier and moreenjoyable or kitchen users. Tats why

we investigate into how people actuallyuse their kitchens, how they cook and

what liestyle they have. Our ndingshelp us develop products that are tailoredto these needs. How long has Blum been doingresearch into kitchen users needs?Weve done almost ten years o intensiveresearch. Weve monitored kitchen use, done research and carried out detailedanalyses o habits, workfows, etc.How much research material have youcollected over the years?Id say weve got about one thousandhours o lm material rom countries allover the world. More countries areplanned over the next two years, e.g. In-dia, unisia, Malaysia and Sweden.

Are there any major diferences in howpeople use their kitchens all over the

world? One big dierence is the rice pull-out orve to ten kilos o rice in Asian countries.Or the baguette pull-out in France, spe-cial disinection equipment in Chinaand the sh grill in Japan. Another in-

teresting example is that in Australia theyhave an outdoor kitchen or barbecuesand an indoor kitchen or preparingdaily ood.

What are the main things we all havein common? Many typical tasks are the same in kit-chens all over the world. For example, themain work area, which should be at least90 cm wide, is ideally between the sinkand the hob. Te worktop is just the rightheight i the distance between slightlybent arms and counter is about 15 cm.

And o course, ergonomic aspects alwaysplay an important role. No matter whichcountry you live in, its not a good ideato have to bend down, stretch or evenclimb onto worktops to reach things.Everyone all over the world recognisesthe advantages o pull-outs that provideeasy access to contents.

What insights do you gain fromRequirement Research? We identiy major and minor needs. Weuse our ndings to develop new products.

A good example in this context is sot-

close BLUMOION. We observed thatpeople oten slam ronts. Doors bang, bottles clink and plates clatter. So therequirement was to integrate a sot-close

system into our ttings. Even minorneeds lead to new practical ideas. Weound that people all over the world getinto a tangle with cling lm. Tats how

we came up with the idea or a practicallm dispenser. Te lm can be pulledout and cut without tangling up.

Blums Requirement Research Department invest-igates kitchen users habits and workflows and findsout what they really need. Here is an interview withMiriam Wildauerwho is a Requirement Expert atJulius Blum GmbH.

    16 SPACE

Bob Cathey has more than 3,000,000sq. metres o space at his disposal.Every minute, containers arrive that

have to be stored in the right place. Andevery minute, containers have to be loadedonto rail, road or back onto ships and spaceis made available again. I have to thinkabout where the ships are scheduled to berthand consider stowage plans and transporta-tion routes, says Bob, mug o coee in hand.Incoming and outgoing containers, thestorage space required, the position ocranes and shunting routes all have to beprecisely planned. Not an inch or minute is

wasted. A small mistake could cost the port

a ortune. Bob likes his job. Planning is inmy blood, he says with a chuckle. He thinksthat managing a port can be compared toeveryday kitchen use. Te quantity andkinds o goods that go into a kitchen; whatyou need oten; what you dont need; andwhere you put everything so that you caneasily reach it. Good storage space manage-ment depends on the space available and ongood storage solutions. Bob knows whathes talking about. But when it came downto buying a new kitchen, his wie was incharge. She insisted on pull-outs in the

whole kitchen, he says with a mischievoussmile. Now I know why. We work rom topto bottom when handling goods, too. Its alot easier and youve got an overview oeverything. She also got her way with thesize o the pull-outs. Pull-outs that use theull depth o the urniture naturally providemore storage space. Just like loading a con-tainer. You fll up the entire container. Itsprobably more complex than in a kitchen,he says, mulling things over, but the tasksare very similar.

Bob Cathey is a wharfinger at the Port of Oakland,California, one of the largest container handlingports in the world. A wharfingers challenges are

similar to those encountered in everyday kitchenuse: Make the most of the space available!

    Everyinchcounts!

Port managers and kitchen buyersask themselves the same question:How can I make the best possibleuse of the space available?

Home owners Lilly and Bill rom Mis-sissauga, Canada, a small town not arrom the Niagara Falls, are a little ex-cited. We take a closer look at the new partylocation. At rst glance the kitchen looks

quite ordinary. But when we watch Lillyadding the nal touches to party dishes,

we immediately see whats so special. Tewall cabinets apparently open by them-selves, and the drawers close sotly andeortlessly. Te whole kitchen seems tobe in motion with Lilly. Were impressed

and the guests should be, too! Cue themoment - the door bell rings and rstguests arrive. Teyre enthusiastically

welcomed by Lillys dog Oliver, a goldendoodle.

While the riends congratulate Angelaand Sarah and give them presents, Billtells us how they came up with the ideao a kitchen party:

Why not start a party where its going to endanyway? In the kitchen! Kitchen parties arethe latest trend. And not just in Austria.

At rst I thought it was just one o thosecrazy ideas that students have. But thenI remembered that when I was young wealways ended up in the kitchen. So why not have the party in the cosiestplace rom the start? We couldnt agreemore and see that the other guests are asenthusiastic as we are.

Sarah and Angelas riends decide to goon a little tour o the kitchen. Whenparty guest Rahim slams a drawer, hisgirl-riend Alyssia (prepared or a loudnoise) gives him a warning nudge. Butthe drawer closes sotly to Alyssiasamazement and to the amusement o theother guests who have been watching thesituation. Ready tobuy your

    new kitchen?

You need to think things throughcarefully before buying becauseyoull have the kitchen you decideon for many years.

No one has the same fingerprints, nor do they have the same wishes or requirements. So why

should it be any different for kitchens? A kitchen can and should be tailored to your individual needs.

Thats why you should think about what your personal needs are! What are your buying habits?

What type of cook are you? How big is your household and could it change soon? Do you have any

pets? What space do you need for what? Give all this information to your kitchen p lanner. For ex-

ample, Ive got a really wide larder unit to fit in all the food for the six of us in my family. And my

kitchen planner gave me many more good ideas which Ive been very happy with for years.

Your kitchen should fit like a made-to-measure suit.Joyce F., 38-year-old computer expert from San Francisco, USA

Normally, youd first ask your friends andacquaintances about their experiences:How did you go about buying your newkitchen? Consider these five kitchenexperts your new friends because theyspeak from their own experience

experience you can benefit from. Here are their tips:

Theres a Chinese proverb that goes wisdom is a privilege of old age. But you neednt wait that

long and you should think ahead when buying your new kitchen. Youll have the kitchen you decide

on for up to 20 years. Once bought, itll have to meet your demands every day.

So think carefully about what youll need later on in life and what you simply cant do without today.

For example, I didnt want to have to bend down anymore or crawl into the back of a cab inet to dig

things out. Thats why my base units all have drawers. Take time to think about design options and

then make a deliberate investment which will pay off every day.

To set things straight: autopilot is a very useful function but not when it comes down to buying a

kitchen! You need to take the initiative! Make the most of your visit to a kitchen shop to try out and

test as much as you can. How does it feel? What do you really like?

Imagine what itll be li ke in your new kitchen. Try things out and decide yourself what is best for you.

I discovered this new wall cabinet l ift system by chance. I changed my mind at the last minute and

chose this system because its so easy to use and the motion is so elegant. So ask for innovations.

You dont want to miss out on something that youd like to have in your new kitchen.

A kitchen planner has been trained to understand your needs. But if you dont tell him or her what

they are, he or she wont be able to plan a kitchen that suits your needs. Tell your kitchen planner

everything about your new kitchen! What are your likes and dislikes? How do you cook? Do you

have any special wishes? I, for example, love to have a long breakfast, even during the week. To

make breakfasts quick to prepare, I keep everything I need together. That was just one detail my

kitchen planner took into account . If you work together, youll get your ideal kitchen. Theyll be able

to suggest solutions that really work for you!

Of course you look forward to buying a new kitchen! But from my own exper ience I know it can be quite

a challenge because youve got to decide on so many things. I did lose heart at times. So my advice

is to not forget your goal: a dream kitchen. Stay motivated. If you dont like something, stick to your

guns. And take the time you need to decide. Your perseverance will pay off at the end of the day.

    Think 20 years ahead.

Dont go on autopilot, try it out yourself!

    Work with your kitchen planner.

    Dont forget your goal!
