Khalil Al-Marzooq (Al-Wefaq) was charged after meeting with Tom Malinowski
20 July 2014 - The Bahraini Ministry of Justice filed a lawsuit againstthe country's main opposition group Al-Wefaq. Although the lawsuitmakes no mention of it, this move by the Bahrain government comesin the aftermath of a meeting between Al-Wefaq and US AssistantSecretary of State Tom Malinowski earlier this month. The court isinstead filing against Al-Wefaq on allegations of violating regulations oftransparency in their general meetings.
Al-Wefaq spokesman Abdul-Jalil Kalil told Associated Press that thecase against the party is aimed at "targeting the group's politicalactivities and the opposition in Bahrain". He explained that thedecision was a "political" one which would "lead to closing all doors inBahrain for a serious and meaningful dialogue or a nationalreconciliation". Another statement by Al-Wefaq and a group of fourother opposition groups said that the decision by Bahrain's Ministry ofJustice reflects that "it is not serious about an inclusive politicalsolution".

ADHRB, BCHR and BIRD's July Champion for Justice is Sheikh Mohammed Habib al-Miqdad (al-Muqdad, al-Moqdad, Al-Mekdad, Alsafaf). Sheikh al-Miqdad, a Swedish-Bahraini citizen, respected
religious leader, social activist and the president of Al-Zahra Charity Institution for orphans, is a prominent member of the
Bahrain 13.
Sheikh al-Miqdad was detained following his public condemnation of the Bahraini regime in 2010 and then later again in 2011. During his detention, he was forced to gargle his own urine,
swallow after guards had spat in his mouth and was subjected to torture by electric shocks all over his body. Follow this link to read
more about his case.
BIRD calls on you to take action by writing a letter to the Swedish foreign minister, asking the minister to petition for Sheikh Mohammed Habib al-Miqdad's unconditional release, to
investigate his allegations of torture and to ensure that he is provided with adequate medical care while he remains in Bahraini
detention.
