Khalil Al-Marzooq (Al-Wefaq) was charged after meeting with Tom Malinowski

20 July 2014 - The Bahraini Ministry of Justice filed a lawsuit againstthe country's main opposition group Al-Wefaq. Although the lawsuitmakes no mention of it, this move by the Bahrain government comesin the aftermath of a meeting between Al-Wefaq and US AssistantSecretary of State Tom Malinowski earlier this month. The court isinstead filing against Al-Wefaq on allegations of violating regulations oftransparency in their general meetings.

Al-Wefaq spokesman Abdul-Jalil Kalil told Associated Press that thecase against the party is aimed at "targeting the group's politicalactivities and the opposition in Bahrain". He explained that thedecision was a "political" one which would "lead to closing all doors inBahrain for a serious and meaningful dialogue or a nationalreconciliation". Another statement by Al-Wefaq and a group of fourother opposition groups said that the decision by Bahrain's Ministry ofJustice reflects that "it is not serious about an inclusive politicalsolution".
