January2017DearStudentsandParent/Guardians;Oneofthemostexcitingactivitiesforourstudentsistheselectionoftheircoursesforthefollowingschoolyear.AsstudentsmovethroughHighSchoolthisinvolvesmoreandmorechoiceincourseofferingseachyear.Itisthisdegreeofchoicethatcanmaketheprocessfeeloverwhelming.Thebestwaytodiffusethestressofthisprocessistoseekhelpearlyandoftenwhentryingtochooseyourbestpath.Mostimportantly,studentsshouldtalkwithteachersineachcontentareaaboutthecourseoptionsavailabletothem.Ourteachingstaffnotonlyknowsthestudentbestwithregardtotheirscholarship,buttheyalsoknowhowthisstudentalignswithsubsequentcourses.Parentscanalsoreachouttocurrentteacherswithquestionsaboutsubsequentcourses.Weencouragethis!Additionally,studentscanalsorequesttomeetwiththeircounseloratanypointintheprocesstotalkabouttheentiretyoftheirschedule.Counselorsareabletospeaktowhatstudentsworkloadwillbelike,whatthemeetingpatternsareforcoursesandhowvariouscoursesfulfillgraduationrequirements.Lastly,ourcontentareasupervisorsareanadditionalresourceforstudentsandparents.Supervisorscanspeaktothebestcoursesforstudentstotakeastheyaligntovariouscollegeandcareeroptionsandwithregardtoamulti-yearperspective.Ourstafftakesgreatprideinhelpingstudentsfindtheir‘bestfit’withregardtotheirprogramofstudyandtheindividualcoursestheyselect.Weencourageyoutomakethisprocessasinteractivewithourteachingstaffandourcounselingstaffasyoucan.Astheage-oldsayinggoes,inthiscontext,‘therearenobadquestions.’Sincerely,MikeKlugmanInterimPrincipal

Grouping Insomeofoursubjectareas,levelsofinstructionhavebeenestablishedtoappropriatelychallengetheacademicabilityofstudents.Informationregardingstudentplacementforacoursemaybefoundinthetextofthecoursedescription.Thisinformationistoserveasaguidelineforparents,teachersandstudents.Parentsareencouragedtoconsultwiththeschoolcounseloriftherearequestionsaboutstudentplacement.

• StudentsConsideringOverseasInternships:TheBethlehemCentralSchoolDistrictissupportiveofoverseas-internshipsandeducationalprogramssponsoredbytheAmericanFieldService(AFS)andotherapproved-programs.Studentsareremindedthatplanningforsuchactivitiesmustoccurwiththeschoolearlyinastudent’seducationalprogram,typicallytwoyearspriortosuchacommitment.Itishighlyrecommendedthatstudentscompleteallrequirementsandprerequisitesasoutlinedintheircourseofstudy,andfoundwithinthishandbookpriortoleavingfortheexperience.Creatingwaiversorexceptionstotheschool’seducationalprogramortimetablewillnotbeallowedunlessthestudent

Academic Intervention Services (AIS) TheAcademicInterventionServices(AIS)PlanhasbeendevelopedbytheBethlehemCentralSchoolDistrictconsistentwithPart100oftheCommissioner’sRegulation,adoptedbytheBoardofRegentsinJuly1999(AppendixA).Section100.1(g)definesAISasfollows:AcademicinterventionservicesareintendedtoassiststudentswhoareatriskofnotachievingtheStatelearningstandardsinEnglishlanguagearts,mathematics,socialstudiesandscience,oratriskofnotgainingtheknowledgeandskillsneededtomeetorexceeddesignatedperformancelevelsonStateassessments.AtBethlehemCentralHighSchool,studentsmaybeplacedwithintheseservicesbasedonthefollowingcriteria:

• Studentswhohavenotpassedstate-mandatedassessmentsinsubjectslistedabove.• Studentswhoeitherhavenotmetrequirementsofstate-mandatedassessments,buthavepassedthe

course,orwhoscoredatlevel1or2onthegrade8:NYSassessments.• Studentswhoarefailingcourses(listedabove)thatareneededtomeetgraduationrequirements.

TimeFrameforCourseChangesTheselectionofcoursesentailsaverycarefulandthoroughdecision-makingprocess.Studentswillhavetheopportunitytomakeschedulechangesatthetimeofcourseverification,whichtypicallytakesplaceinlateJune.Counselorswilladjustforerrors,under-enrolledclassesandconflicts.Onceschoolstartsinthefall,allstudentsmustfollowtheirassignedschedulesforthefirstthreedaysofclassesunlessseriousscheduleproblemsexist(i.e."doublebooked",wronglevel,missingarequiredcourse,etc.).Beginningonthefourthdayofschoolandcontinuingthroughthefifthday,studentsmayinitiateschedulechangerequests.Schedulechangesmaynotbemadeafterthefifthdayofclasses.Studentsmaynotdropasixthfull-yearcourseafterthetenthdayofthesecondsemesterordropasixthsemester-longcourseafterthetenthdayofthesecondorfourthquarter.Specialcircumstanceswillbereviewedbyyourcounselor,teacherandsubjectsupervisor.Studentsshouldtalktothecounselorandteachertoinitiatethecoursedropprocess.

Under-EnrolledCoursesThehighschool’sadministrationanddepartmentsupervisorsreviewallcourseswithanenrollmentoffewerthan17students.Thisreviewisdoneinthespringandmayleadtothedeletionofacourse.Aftersuchadeletionismade,thecounselorswillmeetwithstudentswhoaresignedupforthedeletedcoursetoarrangeforanothercourseselection.Thelistingofacourseatthetimeofstudentenrollmentisnotaguaranteethatitwillbetaughtthefollowingyear.Itisourgoaltoprovidestudentswithacompletescopeofdepartmentalcoursesfromintroductorytothemoreadvancedcourses.However,thefinaldecisionregardingtheofferingofanycourse,includingthosecoursesthatareculminatingcoursesforasequence,isdependentonaminimumofl7studentregistrationsandtheapprovaloftheBoardofEducation.Seniorsandthoseneedingspecificcourseswillbegivenpreference.

Special Education Student Services Studentswhohaveadisabilitymaybeeligibleforanindividualizedplanthatprovidesaccommodationsand/orservicestoassistthestudentinmeetingtheNewYorkStatelearningstandards.

Section504AccommodationPlanStudentswhohaveahandicapthatsubstantiallylimitsoneormoremajorlifeactivitymayreceivea504accommodationplan.Witha504plan,studentsareprovidedclassroomaccommodationsthatcouldincludesuchthingsaspreferentialseating,allowedtoleaveclasstogototheHealthoffice,useoftheelevator,etc.Studentsmightalsorequiretestingaccommodations.

IndividualizedEducationPlanunderIDEAStudentswhohaveadisabilitythatadverselyimpactstheirlearningmayneedanIndividualizedEducationPlan(IEP).TheIEPdescribesthestudent’seducationalstrengthsandneedsrelatedtothedisability.Italsooutlinesthespecialeducationandrelatedservicesgoals,services,classroomaccommodations,technologyneeds,andtestingaccommodationsthatthestudentrequires.TheHighSchooloffersafullcontinuumofspecialeducationservicesandsupportsforstudentswithdisabilities.

RelatedServicesStudentsmayreceiverelatedservices(speechtherapy,occupationaltherapy,physicaltherapy,adaptedphysicaleducation,and/orcounseling)from1-5timesperweek.Relatedservicesmaybeprovidedwithinthegeneraleducationclassroom,inaspecialeducationclassroom,orinatherapyroom.Servicesmaybeindividualorgroup.

LearningCenterLearningCenter(alsocalledresourceroom)isaninstructionalprogramprovidedbyaspecialeducationteacherinagroupoffivestudentsorless.TheserviceisforstudentswithanIEPwhoneeddirect,supplementalinstructionalsupportforsuccessintheirgeneraleducationclasses.Studentsaregroupedinresourceroomstomeettheiruniquelearningneeds:

• Social&Communication—Studentshaveasocialandcommunicationdisorder(AutismSpectrumDisorder)thatrequiresdirectsocialskillstrainingandsupportinnavigatingthesocialenvironmentofschool.Speechlanguagetherapyisprovidedforbothsocialandpragmaticlanguageskills.

• Organization&Writing—Studentsneedsignificantassistancewithorganizationoftime,materialsandwriting.Assistivetechnologysupportisprovidedasneeded.

• Reading&Language—Studentshaveasignificantreadingdisability.Forstudentswithworddecodingandencodingdeficits,amulti-sensoryphonemicreadingapproachisused.Otherstudentsrequiresupportinreadingcomprehension,languagedevelopment,andwriting.Speechlanguagetherapyisprovidedforlanguageandvocabularydevelopment.

• LearningSupport—Studentsmayhaveneedforsupportinmultipleareas.

DirectConsultantTeacherThisprogramisforstudentswithanIEPwhoarepursuingahighschooldiplomaandwhoneedsignificantsupportandmodificationsinthegeneraleducationprogramduetoreadingandmathskillsthatarewell-belowgradelevel.ConsultteachersupportfromaspecialeducationteacherisprovidedintheinterdisciplinarycoursesofMath,SocialStudies,Science,andEnglishrequiredforahighschooldiploma.

LinkingEducationandDevelopment(LEAD)

ThisprogramisdesignedforstudentswhoareworkingtowardaSkillsandAchievementCommencementCredential.InLEAD,studentsparticipateinthesamecoursesthatallhighschoolstudentsmusttakeforgraduation.TheLEADprogramoffersthesamecurriculumwithafocusonkeyconceptsandskillsstudentswillneedformaximumindependenceinwork,home,andcommunityafterhighschool.Thehighschoolcoursesarerotatedina4-yearsequencetoensurethateachstudenthasaccesstothecurriculumduringhis/herhighschoolyears.ThePostGraduateportionoftheprogramoffersstudentstheopportunitytodeveloptheirindependentlivingandvocationalskillsinpreparationforlifebeyondthetypicalhighschoolsetting.
