OUR COMMITTMENT TO OUR STUDENTS

P R I N C I PA L P E R S P E C T I V E

TOM HAMILTON

Winter and spring are seasons many of us spend time watching ballgames. We’ve all probably witnessed that moment when a team “gets on a roll” and pulls away for a victory. Any coach will tell you what a powerful phenomenon momentum plays in athletics. As a matter of fact, I think momentum plays a huge role in just about every-thing we do. As I sit down to write this letter to reflect on this past year, I think I can say Bethlehem has definitely been on a roll!

Two National Merit Finalists and one Commended Student, the highest ACT composite in the school’s history, nearly seven million dollars in offered scholarships, and four Gover-nor’s Scholars make up the largest senior class in recent memory. Members of this class rode that momentum wave to win five district championships in athletics, take a mission trip to Haiti, raise a tremendous amount of money for Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl, and still had time to appear outside our gymnasium in the Inside Out Art Project. As they prepare to move on to over twenty-five different colleges and universities, you have to say these graduates are definitely on a roll!

Because of threatening weather, we hosted graduation in the gym for the first time in ten years. Going inside presents many challenges to our wonderful staff to create a beautiful affair, and they pulled it off without a hitch. For the first time, we had the opportunity to celebrate our traditional cap-throwing ceremony in the new courtyard at the rear entrance of the school. The newly finished and landscaped addition served the purpose that it was intended to do: be a place where students, friends, and family can gather and learn, work, and celebrate. As we prepare to begin Phase II of our campus plan, we will continue to add green space, enhance the learning environment, and build on the almost two-hundred-year legacy of excellence in our school. Yes, you can say our campus is definitely on a roll!

The student body began the school year with a huge dunking to draw awareness of ALS. We also produced two highly successful school plays, attended class retreats, went to school online in lieu of snow days, hosted a newly revamped Open House, marched for life in Washington D.C., earned Advance Ed accreditation again, spent a day at Cross-roads Ministry teaching English to refugees, and many other wonderful projects that I can’t fit on this page. We’ve trained over thirty student ambassadors, hosted over eight school visits, escorted many prospective students on shadow days, and visited church picnics and CCD classrooms that have resulted in our largest freshmen class enrollment in four years. Yes, you can say Bethlehem is definitely on a roll!

NATIONAL MERIT FINALISTS AND COMMENDEDBELLARMINE BOUND

The National Merit® Scholarship Program, which began in 1955, is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. High school students entered the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test no later than their junior year.

Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores qualified for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers were notified through their schools that they had qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. This year, Seth McDow-ell received a Letter of Commendation in recognition of his outstanding academic promise. Among the highest scoring entrants in their state, Colton Stinger and Catherine Terrell were notified that they had qualified as Semifinalists.

In consideration for the designation as National Merit Finalist, the committee reviewed additional information regarding the semifinalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the Finalist’s own essay. In February, Colton and Cath-erine were notified that they had advanced to Finalist standing.

From left to right - Seth McDowell is the son of Pat and Connie McDowell of Bard-stown; Colton Stinger is the son of Russell and Charlene Stinger of Elizabethtown, and Catherine is the daughter of Brent and Debbie Terrell of Bardstown.

BETHLEHEM 103rd GRADUATIONLARGEST CLASS IN RECENT HISTORY

Ninety-one seniors received their diplo-mas during the 103rd Bethlehem High School graduation on Sunday, May 17, 2015. Due to impending bad weather, the ceremony was held in the school’s gym-nasium before a capacity crowd of family and friends.

Seventeen students from the Class of 2015 will continue their education at Western Kentucky University. Another ten will attend Bellarmine University, and ten others will attend Eastern Kentucky University. Other graduates will attend Asbury University, Brescia University, Northern Kentucky University, Spalding University, Morehead College, Thomas More College, Translyvania University, University of Kentucky and University of Louisville in the state of Kentucky. Out of state colleges include University of Missis-sippi, University of Tennessee and Xavier University.

ValedictoriansRepresenting the Class of 2015 as vale-dictorians were Adam Carrithers, Seth McDowell and Colton Stinger. Adam and Colton spoke to the class of ninety-one about their experiences at Bethlehem, their future and their love of their fellow classmates.

SalutatorianJonathan Smith, this year’s Salutatorian, introduced the graduation speaker, Katie Culver.

Graduation SpeakerKatie Culver was chosen by the Class of 2015 as this year’s graduation speaker. In her address to the class, she spoke about the meaning and differences of the words blessings and burdens. “As it turns out the one thing we should stop saying as Christians is the word, ‘blessed.’ We have warped the meaning of the word blessed to fit our modern ideals,” said Mrs. Culver.

She went on to explain that with blessings you say, “Thank you, but you continue to carry your burdens.“ Burdens teach you, shape you and challenge you. She was referring to things we consider as bless-ings that we should learn from - support, friends, family, Bethlehem. “If you are smart, you do something with a burden. God is not telling you ‘you’re welcome’ today for all of these blessings. Instead, I think he is saying, 'You are so challenged by these burdens.' He is asking of you - what will you do with them: will you use these for yourself; will you use these to help make the world around you a better place; will you hold them close for your own comfort; or will you share them?”

Mrs. Culver concluded with a quote from St. Ignatius Loyola: " 'Go forth and set the world on fire!' I know I am not the only one in this place tonight that cannot wait to see the glow of those flames."

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEKCELEBRATING CATHOLIC EDUCATION

National Catholic Schools Week, held for one week beginning the last Sunday in January, is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. Through several events, Bethlehem stu-dents, faculty and staff focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.

The largest event held during the week at Bethlehem is the Catholic Schools Challenge. Held on Thursday of Catholic Schools Week each year, all 6th, 7th and 8th graders from the surrounding county's Catholic schools are invited to join us for a day of celebration.

The day begins with a joint Mass, fol-lowed by lunch, and an afternoon of games and fun. Teams made up with students from each school compete for bragging rights for the next year.

Other events during the week include an Archdiocesan Mass, held each year in Louisville, and special theme days (i.e., Salad Dressing Up Day, Spirit Day) at Bethlehem.

The next National Catholic Schools Week will be held January 31 - February 6, 2015.

The Bethlehem High School Choir, under the direction of Sujin Yoon, performs at the joint Mass, held during Catholic Schools Week.

Daniel Steele participates in Face the Cookie game during Catholic Schools Challenge.

As Father David Cockson sings “This Little Light of Mine,” students shine lights from their iPhones in response.

Family Feud Results in Record Super Raffle Sales

Ask any Bethlehem student and they will tell you - “A t Bethlehem High School, we are truly family”- even when we are feuding! So what more appropriate theme for this year’s Super Raffle than “Family Feud”!

Beginning ten years ago, Super Raffle ticket sales have increased each year, but this year supassed all records by $10,000. Students and parents sell tickets, which generate income to support academic programs, tuition assistance, teachers’ salaries and other operating costs at Bethlehem. This income is critical to our school. Tickets sell for $20 each; first place winner receives $20,000 cash or a 2015 Ford Focus, second place $3,000, third place $2,000 and fourth place $1,000. This year, students developed the entire campaign, building on our ‘family’ atmosphere. Kicking- Off with the Family Feud Game on Feb. 12 and continuing for six weeks, classes feuded daily to maintain the top spot in ticket sales. Prizes were awarded each day, with the class selling the most tickets being rewarded with a day out of school. For the first time in many years, the junior class beat the senior class and also maintained the sales lead throughout the entire campaign, ultimately winning the day out of school!

Marie Blevins and Mary Beth Spaulding, both seniors, wrote the Super Raffle theme song, which was played throughout the campaign. Students who sold at least sixteen tickets received a student-designed long-sleeve t-shirt. Individuals were recognized daily for their sales, and class incentives were earned at the end of each week. Prizes included candy, homework pass, free admittances to a Bethlehem ballgame and the Bethlehem spring musical, out of uniform day and crazy shoe and hat day.

Top sales people were junior Daniel Steele with 118 tickets sold, junior Lucas Fenwick with 87 tickets sold, and senior, J.T. Mattingly selling 63 tickets.

Our students (and parents) were truly amazing in developing the creative super raffle theme and prizes, and selling tickets!

A big shout out to our student committee: Seniors - Seth McDowell, Mary Beth Spauld-ing, Mark Newcomb, Abby Moore, Marie Blevins, Sarah Russman, Molly Simms and Jonathan Smith; Juniors - Daniel Steele, Luke Fenwick and William Brown; Sophomores - Tommy Crawford , Sam Talbert and Curtis Carrico; Freshmen - Sarah Ballard, Cleo Isaacs, Ben Carter and Izzy Neel. Great Job!

2016 Supper Raffle tickets will go on sale Tuesday, Febru-ary 9, 2016, with the drawing on Wednesday, March 23, 2016.

This was the second year for the ar-chery program at Bethlehem. During the regular season the team partici-pated in eight invitational tourna-ments, winning three and finishing second in the other five. In the post season we finished first in the region, and at state we finished thirteenth overall. There were fifteen archers to receive individual awards during the

season as well, some at multiple tournaments. Our most consistent and top scoring male and female archers for the season were Curtis Carrico and Megan Myers.

There were forty-one students on the team this year, and with only two seniors leaving us, we expect to have another great season next year.

BOYS BASKETBALL — Artie Braden

The Eagles finished the regular season with an overall 17-12 record, 12-9 in the Region, and 7-3 in the District.

The Bethlehem Eagles were runner-up in the All "A" Classic Regional Tournament and the Larue County National Guard Invitational. The team was also runner-up in the 19th District Tournament and advanced to the 5th Region Tournament.

The team graduated six seniors this year: Zack Conniff, Wyatt Hagan, Jude Hutchins, Cole Mattingly, J. T. Mattingly and Seth McDowell.
