Waiting With Nature is an interactive light installation designed to entertain and inform waiting passengers at a train station.
It illustrates the weather and season outside by projecting animations of trees and plants that react to movements on the platforms.

Background
The goal of the project was to design a light installation for the train station “Station Korsvägen” that will entertain the waiting passengers.

Interviewing botanist to help map out trees and plants of the swedish nature, what blooms when and what it looks like.
Developing what interactions that are possible during the four different seasons and which plants visually represent each phase in the best way.

The result is an interactive installation with illustrations of trees and plants that represent that time of year in the best way.

It can be used by anyone visiting the station, either by interacting with it or simply by enjoying the view.
Each phase offers several new types of interactions, thereby making it an ever changing experience throughout the year.
The installation gives a continuous feedback of the current weather outside by displaying rain, snow, or sunshine.

Winter depression “SAD” (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is found in both the northern and southern hemisphere and occurs due to experiencing a lack of sunlight.

The L1 lamp was developed as an alternative for treatment of winter depression.

Level of use includes duration of treatment, whether the user is stationary or mobile, and at what time during the day the treatment is distributed (Used at the wrong time of day will-have little to no effect)

Products with low aesthetic appeal are often put away and kept hidden between treatments either because they’re an eyesore, or because depression is a sensitive subject and people feel ashamed of getting treatment for it.

“An average session takes 2 hours and have to be administered in the morning hours to have an effect. The time could be shortened by using stronger lights with a higher Lux.” - Åsa Nilsson

The interview was held in one of the light rooms allowing us to get a first hand experience of a session.

Interview with nurses Åsa Nilsson and Isa Slidén who specialize in light room therapy at the Fosie clinic in Malmö.
The light that triggers the body to stop producing melatonin is found in the wavelengths of the blue color spectrum around 485 nm.

Using Arbetsmiljöverkets application to measure the Lux of LEDs at various distances. Treating SAD requires the light emitted to reach between 10 000 and 17 000 Lux.

Using a 2D setup to study the light spread and develop the shape. By altering the placement of light sources and shades, angles at which glare occur could easily be determined and avoided.
Two sets of light sources were incorporated into the design. The first one for normal everyday use, and the second one for therapy mode able to output enough Lux in the right type of blue light.
proToTyping
3D-modeling, CNC-milling molds, vacuum forming & painting. Each part coated with a black base layer to block light from shining through the plastic.
The high powered LEDs used for the therapy mode have a high working temperature and require very efficient heatsinks to stay operational.
3D-printing diffusers and other small parts.
By gently pushing down on top of the lamp it switches between regular use and light therapy mode.

Gravity assist was developed in collaboration with NASA, it helps prevent muscle atrophy in the legs and feet of astronauts.
Its function is to create a resistance similar to that of a stronger gravitational pull which in turn allows the muscles to stay active and halt muscle atrophy.
The gravitational pull of 3.711 m/s² on mars is only about a third compared to earth.
While in transit the body starts to break down its muscles due to the lack of gravitational force resistance.

There is an opportunity to prevent further muscle atrophy and help rebuild lost muscle mass for astronauts while on mars.

Astronauts onboard the ISS (International Space Station) work out for 2 hours a day to minimise the effects of a weightless environment.

Shape development sketching together with size mockup built using plaster in scale 1:1.
By creating a resistance when bent, the user needs to exsert a greater force which in turn actives the muscles to a higher extent.

Hexagon holes for good ventilation, less material use and a strong structure.
The result is a foot piece for astronauts that create a resistance for the feet while walking similar to that of a stronger gravity.

The gravity assist is to be used inside the living habitat and can be worn either by itself or together with footwear.
Each piece is possible to 3D-print on site, allowing both the shape and resistance to be altered according to the individuals form and strength.

IKEA FAM is a kitchen unit developed together with IDEO for the modern kitchen of 2025.

IKEA FAM shows users how to cook and follow recipes successfully. This is done by using weight sensors and cameras that analyze items placed on it, from this it indicates the amount needed of each ingredient, temperature, time, and even instructs where to chop, fillet, and how fast to stir.
The result is IKEA FAM, a platform fit for installation in any kitchen of 2025. The surface works as both a stove and a screen which connects to a network ready to inspire and assist the user in the cooking process.
resuLT FAM helps plan meals and suggest new ones based on what groceries are available thereby inspiring users to try new meals while at the same time minimizing food waste.
By sharing audio and video users can connect to cooking classes led by professional chefs or between units to cook together with friends and family even from across the country.
IKEA FAM is set to inspire and teach how to make new meals by sharing cooking knowledge. It’s goal is to revive the joy of cooking for the individual as well as together with other people.
Loon was developed in collaboration with Lyktan Bankeryd Belysning during the spring of 2012.

The light is inspired by the theme of “French Bistro” with focus on showing the construction of the light.
The lampshade consists of four parts that are stackable allowing for less volume to be used during shipment.
Between each part sits a brushed acrylic disc, the disk breaks up the light and gives it a strong characteristic look from afar.
The material choice of copper or brass softens the robustness and gives the light a bit of charm found in the bistro theme.
Brief to develope IKEAs current packaging used by the customers for transporting plates, glasses and cutlery both inside the store, and on the way home.

The result i a compact fold-out cardboard packaging that is easy for the user to understand how to use, cheap in production, and allows quick access to the bar codes at checkout.

In 2011 Ljusterbar was awarded an honor prize in Svenskt Aluminiums design competition. Jury motivation: “Ljusterbar has a strong technical expressions which are reminiscent of Meccano in a positive and challenging way. The combination possibilities and flexibility is tangible and gives the user access to many creative solutions.”

Ljusterbar is a modular candlestick made of 100 % aluminum, it consists of 4 parts and is used with standard tea lights.
