LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVENBorn in Bonn, December 16, 1770Died in Vienna, March 26, 1827
Violin Sonata No. 7 in C minor, Op. 30, No. 2
The three sonatas Beethoven published
as Op. 30 were composed in 1802. The
C-minor sonata is one of the grandest in
the violinist’s repertoire, a work of drama,
passion, and power, almost symphonic in
scale. Of Beethoven’s ten violin sonatas,
this is the “biggest” in feel and scope,
boasting four movements rather than
the standard three. Although the two
instruments are virtually equal partners,
the work was designated in the manuscript
score as being “for pianoforte and violin,”
implying that the violin’s contribution
was of secondary importance. Beethoven
changed that, in practice if not quite in
theory. Yet a vestige of this mentality
remains even in the mighty C-minor sonata,
for every one of its four movements opens
with a principal theme for piano.
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVENBonn, 16 décembre 1770Vienne, 26 mars 1827
Sonate pour violon no 7 en do mineur, opus 30, no 2
Beethoven composa les trois sonates
de l’opus 30 en 1802. La Sonate en do
mineur est sans conteste une des plus
majestueuses de tout le répertoire
du violon. Le drame, la passion et la
puissance sont au rendez-vous dans
cette œuvre d’une envergure presque
symphonique.
Beethoven
modifia cette habitude dans la pratique,
sinon en théorie. Il reste pourtant un
vestige de cette mentalité dans la
puissante Sonate en do mineur dont
chacun des quatre mouvements débute
avec un thème principal pour le piano.

FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDNBorn in Rohrau, Austria (today in Hungary), March 31, 1732Died in Vienna, May 31, 1809
Symphony No. 83 in G minor, “The Hen”
Although Haydn was pretty much confined
to the palace at Eszterháza (in present-
day Hungary) during the years 1766-1790,
his fame had spread all over Europe, and
nowhere more so than to France. There,
the Count d’Ogny, Claude-François-
Marie Rigoley, asked Haydn for a set of
six symphonies in return for a handsome
fee. These symphonies are today
catalogued as Nos. 82-87, though this
was not their order of composition. We
are now certain that Nos. 83 and 87 were
written in 1785; Nos. 82, 84 and 86 the
following year; and No. 85 probably in late
1785. The powerful and dramatic G-minor
opening of No. 83 reminds one more of a
Sturm und Drang symphony from around
1770 than of the mature Haydn of the mid-
1780s. In fact, this was the last symphony
in a minor key Haydn was to write save for
No. 95 (in C minor). Furthermore, only the
first movement is in G minor, and even that
ends in G major. The symphony takes its
title from the first movement’s second
subject, where violins suggest the clucking
of hens and the oboe suggests strutting
or pecking. (The appellation came not
from Haydn, but from the French.) The
development section is one of Haydn’s
most expansive, and incorporates virtually

Symphonie no 83 en sol mineur « La Poule »
Entre 1766 et 1790, Haydn ne quitta
pratiquement jamais le palais d’Esterháza
(aujourd’hui en Hongrie). Cependant,
95 (en do mineur).
majeur. Le titre de la symphonie provient
Mario Bernardi led the NAC Orchestra in their first performance of Haydn’s Symphony No. 83 in 1970, and the Orchestra’s most recent performance took place in 1982, again under the direction of Mario Bernardi.

Lutosławski l’a
elles. À l’instar de l’œuvre susmentionnée
all the elements from the exposition into a
contrapuntal tour de force.
WITOLD LUTOSŁAWSKIBorn in Warsaw, January 25, 1913Died in Warsaw, February 7, 1994
Musique funèbre (Funeral Music)
It is entirely appropriate that Lutosławski’s
Funeral Music appear on the same program
as a work by Bartók. Not only is the Funeral
Music dedicated to Bartók, but in several
ways it is modeled after Bartók’s Music for
Strings, Percussion and Celesta. Lutosławski
composed it between 1954 and 1958,
just after the Concerto for Orchestra, the
work that made him famous outside his
native Poland. The first performance was
given on March 26, 1958 in Katowice by
the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra
conducted by Jan Krenz. Though laid out
as a single movement of about fifteen
minutes, it is arranged in four linked
sections. Like the aforementioned Bartók
work, it begins quietly in the lower strings
(cellos) and develops fugally in its opening
pages. The music slowly gathers energy,
The NAC Orchestra has performed Lutosławski’s Musique funèbre twice before, in 1992 under the direction of Pinchas Zukerman and in 1981 with the composer himself on the podium.

rising eventually to a fierce, climactic
chord consisting of all twelve notes of the
chromatic scale. From there it subsides to a
quiet closing, much as it began. Lutosławski
freely employs the twelve-tone procedure
promulgated by Arnold Schoenberg, yet
the effect on the listener is anything but
technical or mechanical. Here is how
Uwe Kraemer describes it: “The manner
in which lamentation, grief, dramatic
revolt, loneliness, despair, and passionate
agitation are represented, and the way the
strictest form is combined with the highest
degree of expression, are the determining
qualities that characterize this music.”

Divertimento for Strings
In 1939, with Europe on the brink of war,
Paul Sacher, founding conductor of the
Basel Chamber Orchestra and a wealthy
admirer of Bartók, offered the composer
the use of his chalet in Switzerland, near
Freibourg. Here, in splendid isolation
from the approaching storm, Bartók
composed his Divertimento. He described
his situation at the Sachers’ chalet as
making him feel “like an old-time musician
summoned as the guest of a Maecenas.”
So fiercely did the creative fires burn that
he completed the work in just fifteen days.

10 Go behind the scenes with nac-cna.ca/stories
The first performance was given, naturally,
by Sacher and his orchestra on June 11,
1940 in Basel.
The Divertimento takes its inspiration
from the worlds of both Mozart (Classical)
and Vivaldi (Baroque). The title derives
from those accessible, light-hearted
compositions for small ensembles so
popular during the late eighteenth century.
Biographer Halsey Stevens calls the
Divertimento “almost Mozartean in its
buoyancy . . . the most spontaneous and
carefree work of Bartók since the Dance
Suite.” The Divertimento is, in truth, a
“diversion,” not only in character, but as
a symbolic reference to Bartók’s idyllic
interlude at Saanen. Also harking back to
the days of Mozart are the classical forms
Bartók used: sonata-form for the first
movement, ternary for the second, and
rondo for the third. The Baroque aspect of
the Divertimento is found in its deployment
of the instruments as solo and tutti groups
in the manner of the Vivaldian concerto
grosso, though Bartók refrains from
applying this principle rigorously.
By Robert Markow

Joshua Weilersteinconductor/chef d’orchestre
Since winning the Malko Conducting
Competition in 2009, Joshua Weilerstein
has rapidly become one of the most
sought-after young conductors in the
world. Mr. Weilerstein begins his tenure
as Artistic Director of the Orchestre de
Chambre de Lausanne in 2015-16. Last
season, he completed his three-year
appointment as Assistant Conductor of
the New York Philharmonic.
In 2014-15, Mr. Weilerstein makes
debuts with DSO-Berlin, Detroit Symphony,
the National Arts Centre Orchestra and
NHK Symphony (Tokyo), among others,
and takes the Orchestre Philharmonique
de Luxembourg on a seven-city tour
of Germany. He also returns to the
New England Conservatory of Music,
where he received dual Master of Music
degrees in 2011 in orchestral conducting
with Hugh Wolff and in violin with
Lucy Chapman.
Mr. Weilerstein believes fundamentally
in the importance and value of music
education and outreach. He has served
as Concertmaster of Discovery Ensemble,
a Boston-based chamber orchestra
dedicated to presenting classical music
to inner-city schools in Boston. He also
established a close link with the Orquesta
Sinfónica Simón Bolívar as the ensemble’s
first non-Venezuelan guest violinist while
still in his teens, and then as conductor in
2010 and 2012.
New York Philharmonic.
Il fait en 2014-2015 ses débuts
notamment avec le DSO-Berlin, l’Orchestre
symphonique de Detroit, l’Orchestre du
CNA et le NHK Symphony (Tokyo), et
il dirige l’Orchestre Philharmonique de
Luxembourg en tournée dans sept villes
d’Allemagne.
Joshua Weilerstein croit fermement
Pho
