THE CITY #THECITY#
The people of Bari love to repeat thisphrase: ‘If Paris was on the sea, it wouldlook like a small Bari’. Obviously, this is anexaggeration, but it tells us a lot about thepride (and sense of humour) in this area. This is a city with a deep sense of historyand art, with rich cultural roots and amodern business outlook. An importantcity under the Greeks, Bari became aRoman municipality, and was latergoverned by the Saracens, the Venetians, the Normans, the Aragons and finally theBourbons before becoming part of Italy. Asa link between the Greek andMiddle-Eastern worlds, Bari experienced itsgolden age during the medieval period. The glories of that age are perfectlysymbolised by the stupendous Cathedraland Church of San Nicholas.
The Emperor Augustus Promenade is alsoworthy of note – it is the main through farein the city – as is the Nazario SauroPromenade, which provides a magnificentwalkway along the sea front as well assuperb views over the city itself. To the leftis the S. Nicola jetty where every year, onthe 8 May, the ceremony of thethaumaturgy statue takes place. Thestatue is taken to sea on a boat where it isworshipped by pilgrims and believers. Inthis area you can sample the marvelloussea food in the working class bay areaknown as the “nderre a la lanze”.

Pugliese cuisine is usually associated withorecchiette (little-ear shaped) pastaaccompanied by cime di rapa (turnip-tops),but there is much more to this region thanthat one dish. The fresh vegetables foundhere are often prepared with oil and garlicand other specialities include fish, homemade pasta and vegetable andcereal-based soups. Most dishes are servedwith very good bread or taralli (similar tobreadsticks). The burrata (mozzarellacheese with a cream centre) should not bemissed.
