Part XVIII . of "Cuneiform Tcxts from ijabylonian Tablets, etc.," contains texts from one hundred ancl twenty-cight clay tablets and f~agments of thc I<ouyunjik and othcr collections in the British Museum. T h e material published in this Part is entirely Icxic~g~aphical in chasactcr, and forms a portion of the great class of explanatory compositions which the Assyrian scribes com1,iled and edited during the period of the later Assyrian kings. The copies hcrcin give11 are made from the tablets drawn up by order of Ashur-.bani-pal, Icing of Assyria fro111 I:.c. 668 to 13.c. 626, for the Royal Library at Nineveh.

The Assyrian ancl Babylonian scribes were diligent studcnts of their o\vn literature, and with the twoiold object of aiding themselves in their own researches and of assisting begiilners in their studies they compilcd catalogues of their principal literary works and wrote explanatory tablets and commentaries on the more difficult among them. They also studied the language itself and thc Assyrian method of writing, and, in ordcr to facilitate the study of early Assyrian and Bahylonian texts, thcy compiled lists of the archaic forms of the characters ancl ;tttempted to trace thcm back tc the pictures fro111 which thcy origiilally sprang. Thc Assyrian scribes also compiled syllabarics, or lists of signs, to which they addccl the values of the characters and their Assyrian naines and meanings.

The Assyrian explanatory texts include grammatical ~jaradigms made for the use of beginners, classified lists of verbal formations, and lists of ideographs arranged in some cases according to the forms of the character5 with which they began or ended, and in others according to the meaniilgs or roots of their equivalents.

Perhaps. the most interesting class of grammatical tablets are the lists of synonymous Assyrian words, examples of which are publishecl in the present Part ; these tablets are really the oldest dictionaries in the world. The tablets are inscribed in double columns, that on the left containing the words to isc explained, and that on the right the synonyms. Sometimes several synonyms arc given for thc same word, and in such cases the scribe, in order to save himself the trouble of repeating the original word, often makes use of the sign 77, which is equivalent to our double commas (,, ) or "ditto."

Many of the tablets given in the following l~lalcs have already been publishecl either in whole or in part, and excerpts from thcrn lixve been frequently cluotecl ancl discussed ; they are, howevcr, here published i n a complete for111 for the first time. They may be conveiliently classified under the following five headings :.--
