Definition of autism

• Is a disorder of neutral development characterized

by impaired social interaction and communication.

• Affects information processing in the brain by

altering how nerve cells connect and organize.

• Has a strong genetic basis and the genetics of

autism are complex.

Different types of autism There are many different types of known autism, the main three

are:

• Autistic Disorder:

1. It is the most serious of all types.

2. Also known as true autism, this disorder results behaviors,

interests, and activities.

• Pervasive Developmental Disorder:

1. It is typical autism, this is less serious than true autism.

2. People with this type of autism think literally and not understand

humor

• Asperger's Disorder:

1. It is the least serious of all types.

2. Children with this disorder show little, if any, general language

delay.

What causes autism?• The brain shows abnormalities in the frontal lobes

and brain stem. • The higher incidence of autism in families points to a

genetic aspect.• Toxins enter the bloodstream and reach the brain to

cause havoc in many sensory and cognitive functions.

Signs of autism

• Parents usually notice signs in the first two years of their

child's life.

• The signs of autism are:

1. Communicating verbally and non-verbally.

2. Relating to others and the world around them.

3. Thinking and behaving flexibility.

is there a cure?!

• Although there is no known cure, there have been reported cases of children who recovered autism.

• Not many children with autism live independently after reaching adulthood,

though some become

successful.
