Any individual who has been involved in at least 3 projects utilizing the commissioning process and meets one of the following combinations of academic and work experience criteria will be eligible to take the examination for the CPMP certification.

Government-issued license as a professional engineer or architect with at least 3 years’ facilities operations/ management, construction, design, or consulting experienceORMinimum of Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and at least 6 years’ facilities operations/management, construction, design, or consulting experienceOR

Associate’s degree or technical diploma in building design, construction, construction management, facility operation, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and at least 7 years’ facilities operations/management, construction, design, or consulting experience

ORHigh school diploma or equivalent or construction-related trades training or building operations training from a nationally or internationally recognized trade association with at least 10 years’ facilities operations/management, construction, design, or consulting experience

Schedule an Examination: Examinations are available at testing centers worldwide. The CPMP examination is 2½ hours long and consists of 115 multiple choice questions.

Review Available Resources: Each certification guidebook identifies available resources that may help candidates gain an understanding of the body of knowledge the examination tests. Available resources include ASHRAE-owned and non-ASHRAE owned publications and courses.

Some ASHRAE members pass the examination from their working knowledge and familiarity with relevant Standards and Publications.

Renew Your Certification: Each certification holder must earn 45 ASHRAE Continuing Education units (ACEs) during the 3-year period following initial certification or the last renewal.

ACEs can be earned from a variety of activities — ASHRAE-sponsored and non-ASHRAE-sponsored. Most activities that are acceptable for license renewal will also be acceptable for certification renewal. For ACEs, the activity must be technical in nature and directly related to the topic of the certification.
